In a test example petrol was placed in a tank having a crude oil residue, to create a highly explosive atmosphere, the tank was. then filled and continuously purged with a foam gasified with CO2 and oxy-acetylene cutting and welding were carried out safely on the tank. A foam-making appliance is described which is also described and claimed in the divisional Specification 1441260.

[Class 135] A valve suitable for insertion between a manual regulating valve on a gas storage vessel and the reducing valve in a gas welding system to prevent pressure surges reaching the reducing valve comprises a valve member 14 retained open by a spring 11 and having flutes on its external surface through which the gas passes to the outlet 13. The end of the valve is recessed at 18 and a-bleed passage 19 is controlled by a screw 22. When a sudden high inlet pressure exists, the valve 14 is closed and the gas leaks through the bleed passage 19 until the pressure in the outlet gradually increases and the valve again opens. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the end of the valve 14a has a cavity 18a into which projects the end 25 of a fitting 24 on the inlet end of the housing ; this arrangement increases the effect of the sudden high pressure on the closing of the valve. The bleed passage is formed in this case around the thread of the screw 22 by making the bore 19a in the valve oversize before tapping ; a filter disc 27 is fitted adjacent the head of the screw 22.

The pressure gauges indicate pressure drop in the high pressure side in front of the redn valve and built up pressure behind it, the high pressure indicator being fitted with a device for setting the lowest value so that a constant gas supply is assured, whilst the low pressure gauge has a device for setting the highest pressure of that part of the system from which the supply to the welding head branches. The system ensures that welding is carried out only when the protective gas is supplied correctly switching the gas and current supply off when the set limits are passed.

Plant for welding and cutting metallic alloys with the aid of a mixt. of oxygen, fuel-gas and metal powder. The novelty is that the metal powder is contained in a reservoir and fed at a rate controlled by the pressur of the O2 in the burner so that a mixt. of relatively constant proportions of oxygen, fuel-gas and metal powder is projected onto the surface of the metal workpiece. The pipe used to lift the metal powder is pref. surrounded by a fusible seal, which melts if any blow-back of the flame occurs, so air enters the reservoir to prevent an explosion of the metal powder in the presence of O2, and a second fusible seal admits a non-combustible gas under pressure into the O2 pipe. Welding and cutting stainless steels and other alloys using a metal powder consisting mainly of Fe, and where devices prevent any blow-back from causing an explosion.
