The VEEP process also retains a high degree of crystallinity within the PLA for increasing toughness and to lower its biodegradability. The invention also includes an integral process wherein rheology is highly modified to allow profile extrusion and higher melt strength wherein processing is lower than the melting point of the primary biopolymer and below the browning points of the natural fibers in the biopolymers viscoelastic state.

A method of manufacturing bulked continuous carpet filament which, in various embodiments, comprises: (A) grinding recycled PET bottles into a group of flakes; (B) washing the flakes; (C) identifying and removing impurities, including impure flakes, from the group of flakes; (D) passing the group of flakes through an MRS extruder while maintaining the pressure within the MRS portion of the MRS extruder below about 5 millibars; (E) passing the resulting polymer melt through at least one filter having a micron rating of less than about 50 microns; and (F) forming the recycled polymer into bulked continuous carpet filament that consists essentially of recycled PET.

A parallel flow passage has an inlet placed between the first metering pump and the entrance to the capillary passage, in close juxtaposition with the entrance and an outlet placed between the exit from the capillary passage and the second metering pump, and a valve in the parallel flow passage is operated so that diverted melt selectively is passed through the parallel flow passage to attain a relatively quick response and relatively short residence time of the diverted melt in the rheometer.

A method of reducing wastage during the start-up phase of an extrusion device used to produce extruded profiles such as tread strips for vehicle tires from a plurality of mixtures is disclosed. The extrusion device comprises a plurality of extruders each extruding a component of the profile and each extruder has its own drive means. The outlets from the extruders communicate with a template member having flow channels formed therein which lead into a common extrusion port. The drive means are actuated simultaneously and the pressure of each of the components is monitored in the outlet region of each extruder. These pressures are compared with a pre-determined desired pressure by a control device, which device switches-off the appropriate drive means as each desired pressure is attained. When all desired pressures have been attained, all of the drive means are re-actuated simultaneously by the control device. In a minor modification of the method, the drive means for the final extruder to reach its desired pressure is not switched-off and the other drive means are simultaneously re-actuated when the final desired pressure is attained.

Controlled release, discrete, solid particles which contain an encapsulated and/or embedded component such as a heat sensitive or readily oxidizable pharmaceutically, biologically, or nutritionally active component are continuously produced without substantial destruction of the matrix material or encapsulant. A release-rate controlling component is incorporated into the matrix to control the rate of release of the encapsulant from the particles. The additional component may be a hydrophobic component or a high water binding capacity component for extending the release time. The plasticizable matrix material, such as starch, is admixed with at least one plasticizer, such as water, and at least one release-rate controlling component under low shear mixing conditions to plasticize the plasticizable material without substantially destroying the at least one plasticizable material and to obtain a substantially homogeneous plasticized mass. The plasticizer content is substantially reduced and the temperature of the plasticized mass is substantially reduced prior to admixing the plasticized mass with the encapsulant to avoid substantial destruction of the encapsulant and to obtain a formable, extrudable mixture. The mixture is extruded though a die without substantial or essentially no expansion and cut into discrete, relatively dense particles. Release properties may also be controlled by precoating the encapsulant and/or coating the extruded particles with a film-forming component.
