The invention provides a rigid foam slab of the aforementioned type which achieves on the one hand high values for dynamic elasticity, that is to say low values for dynamic stiffness, even at low values for the slab thickness, and on the other hand relatively high values for the long-term loading capacity (reduction with time of the installed slab thickness at a predetermined area pressure). These values, which are improved compared with the state of the art, result from the fact that the prefoamed granules used for slab production are, during complete foaming, allowed to relax perpendicular to the surface of the slab to be foamed. The present application relates to a method and system that can be utilized to manufacturing composite structures in a closed cavity mold. The tool system includes a closed cavity tool with spring members that when in compression apply pressure to a preform located within the closed cavity mold. During a curing cycle, the spring members provide substantially constant pressure to the preform, thereby preventing voids and porosity in the cured composite structure. Further, the substantially constant pressure, provided by the spring members, acts to more effectively conform the preform to the geometry defined by a void in the closed cavity mold during the curing cycle. 1. A method of manufacturing a composite part , the method comprising:assembling a preform in a closed cavity tool, the closed cavity tool having an upper mold and a lower mold;securing the upper mold and the lower mold between a plurality of upper adapters adjacent to the upper mold and a plurality of lower adapters adjacent to the lower mold;wherein the securing of the upper mold and the lower mold between the plurality of upper adapters and the plurality of lower adapters includes connecting the plurality of upper adapters to respective ones of the plurality of lower adapters by a plurality of rod members, such that each of the plurality of upper adapters is coupled to a respective one of the plurality of lower adapters by at least two of the plurality of rod members;providing a respective one of a plurality of springs on each of the plurality of rod members such that each, of the rod members extends through a respective one of the plurality of springs;applying pressure to the preform by compressing the plurality of springs such that each upper adapter and lower adapter transfers compressive forces generated by the plurality of springs to the upper mold and the lower mold; andcuring the preform until the preform becomes a cured composite structure.2. A tire curing press with an improved loader includes a shaping or center mechanism which includes a vertically movable well on which is mounted the bottom bead or toe ring. The press includes a loader of improved design affording precision centering and accuracy which is driven for vertical movement by a ball screw and nut drive which positions the green tire concentric with the upper and lower mold sections and over the bottom bead ring. The loader then moves the green tire downwardly until the lower bead of the green tire reaches a predetermined point touching or fairly closely adjacent the elevated bead ring. Simultaneously, an adjustable pad on the loader contacts the tip of an extended rod of a vertically oriented synchronizer piston-cylinder assembly. Concurrently, a sensor is tripped to power the synchronizer piston downwardly and as such piston moves downwardly, the loader follows at a slightly higher speed causing the rotary motor of the ball screw drive to be retarded or stall, thus keeping the loader in contact with the tip of the rod of the synchronizer cylinder assembly. As the synchronizer piston is being powered down, fluid on the underside of such piston is being forced over to the top ports of a pair of bead lift cylinder assemblies causing them to bring the well and thus the lower bead ring down at the same speed as the loader is bringing the tire down. In this manner the green tire and lower bead ring are maintained in constant relationship until the bead ring is seated on the lower mold section. The point of bead ring seating provides a physical stop which in turn blocks the synchronizer piston and rod, and thus the loader from further downward travel. This synchronization is accomplished by making the blind end area of the piston of the synchronizing cylinder assembly twice the equal rod end areas of the pistons of the bead lift cylinders.

FIELD: polymer materials. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods for preparing compositions based on starch and uniformly distributed fibers that can be used for manufacturing packaging articles. Articles with elevated strength, characterized by sufficient flexibility and impact resistance and having cellular structural matrix with starch binder and reinforced by practically uniformly dispersed fibers are prepared from aforesaid compositions having high yield stress due to liquid fraction presented. In a double-stage mixing process, preliminarily mixed formulation is prepared by gelatinization of a part of starch binder or another thickener in water. Fibers should preferably have average length exceeding about 2 mm and length/diameter ratio exceeding ca. 25:1. Preliminary formulation is supplemented by the rest of starch binder, water, and other desired additives such as process form lubrication agent, mineral fillers, plasticizers, internal coating or sealing materials, and dispersants for manufacturing dimensionally stable products having selectively controlled foamed structural matrix. Resulting articles can replace those manufactured at present time from conventional materials such as paper, cardboard, polystyrene, plastics, and other organic-based materials. Suitable inorganically filled mixtures are prepared by mixing together a starch-based binder, a solvent, inorganic aggregates, and optimal admixtures, e.g., fibers, mold-releasing agents, rheology-modifying agents, plasticizers, coating materials, and dispersants, in the correct proportions to form an article which has the desired performance criteria. The inorganically filled mixtures have a predetermined viscosity and are heated between molds at an elevated temperature and pressure to produce form-stable articles having a desired shape and a selectively controlled cellular, structure matrix. The molded articles may be placed in a high humidity chamber to obtain the necessary flexibility for their intended use. The articles may be manufactured to have properties substantially similar to articles presently made from conventional materials like paper, paperboard, polystyrene, plastic, or other organic materials. They have especial utility in the mass-production of containers, particularly food and beverage containers.
