A cartridge unit (10) for an inkjet printer, with an ink storage compartment (46) and an ink feed system (30) for connection to a printhead (22). The ink storage compartment has a displaceable wall section (48) so that its variable storage volume (46) is variable. The displaceable wall (48) is biased (54) toward expanding the variable storage volume (46) so that there is a negative pressure in the ink storage volume (46), such that ink does not inadvertently leak from the ink ejection nozzles. Without negative pressure, an ink meniscus can bulge from the nozzles. The meniscus will 'pin' itself to the edge of the nozzle aperture and may be strong enough to stop ink leakage. However, paper dust or other contaminants will eventually stop the bulging meniscus from pinning itself on the nozzle rim and leakage occurs. A negative pressure in the ink storage volume makes the meniscus invert back into the nozzle aperture. As the meniscus does not bulge out of the nozzle, paper dust on the nozzle ...

The liquid drop emitter comprises a chamber, filled with a liquid, having a nozzle for emitting drops of the liquid, a thermo-mechanical actuator having a moveable portion within the chamber for applying pressure to the liquid at the nozzle, and apparatus adapted to apply heat pulses to the thermo-mechanical actuator. The method for operating comprises applying a first heat pulse having a first power P 1 , first pulse duration τ p1 , and first energy E 1 =P 1 ×τ p1 , displacing the movable portion of the actuator so that a drop is emitted having a first drop volume V d1 , and traveling substantially at the target velocity v 0 ; and applying a second heat pulse having a second power P 2 , second pulse duration τ p2 , and second energy E 2 =P 2 ×τ p2 , displacing the movable portion of the actuator so that a drop is emitted having a second drop volume V d2 and traveling substantially at the target velocity v 0 , wherein V d2 >V d1 , E 2 >E 1 , τ p2 >τ p1 , and P 2 <P 1 . An alternate method for operating causes the emission of drops having different volumes traveling at different velocities wherein all velocities are within a pre-determined drop velocity range, v d min to v d max . Further methods for operating an ink jet printhead cause the emission of drops having different volumes and velocities wherein the triggering of the drop emission is delayed so as to result in synchronized arrival times at a print plane.

Controlling waveforms to reduce cross-talk between inkjet nozzles

Номер: US10308013B1
Принадлежит: Eastman Kodak Co

An inkjet printhead includes two groups of interleaved nozzles. First and second sets of drop-formation waveforms are associated with the groups of nozzles to selectively cause portions of a liquid jet to break off into drops. A timing delay device time-shifts the second-group waveforms relative to those associated with the first-group waveforms. A charging-electrode waveform having portions with first and second potentials is provided to a charging electrode. The waveform energies of the second-group waveforms is larger than the waveform energies of the corresponding first-group waveforms so that printing drops break off from the liquid jets while the charging-electrode is at the first potential, and non-printing drops break off from the liquid jets while the charging-electrode is at the second potential.

Thermal actuator drop-on-demand apparatus and method for high frequency

Номер: US6460972B1
Принадлежит: Eastman Kodak Co

A liquid drop emitter, such as an ink jet device, for emitting a series of liquid drops at high frequency is disclosed. The drop emitter comprises a liquid-filled chamber having a nozzle, a thermo-mechanical actuator for applying pressure to liquid at the nozzle, means for heating the thermo-mechanical actuator in response to electrical pulses, and a controller for determining the parameters of the electrical pulses. The method of operating comprises determining a nominal electrical pulse having a nominal energy E 0 , a nominal pulse duration T P0 , which causes the emission of at least one drop at a sustained period of repetition T C . The method of operating further determines a steady state electrical pulse having energy E 0 , a steady state pulse duration T Pss , which, when applied to the electroresistive means does not cause the emission or weeping of the liquid from the nozzle. The method applies to the means for heating, during every period of time T C , a nominal electrical pulse to emit at least one drop, or a steady state electrical pulse, so that an average power P AVE , where P AVE =E 0 /T C , is applied to the liquid drop emitter in order to maintain a steady state thermal condition.

Over actuation detection in a micro electromechanical device

Номер: US6921145B2
Автор: Kia Silverbrook
Принадлежит: SILVERBROOK RESEARCH PTY LTD

A method of detecting an over actuation condition within a micro electromechanical device in the form of an ink ejection nozzle having an actuating arm that moves an ink displacing paddle when heat inducing electric current is passed through the actuating arm and having a movement sensor associated with the actuating arm. The method comprises the steps of passing at least one current pulse having a predetermined duration through the actuating arm and detecting for a rate of movement of the actuating arm. A fault condition is detected to exist where the detected rate of movement is in excess of the rate for normal operation.

Printhead employing data packets including address data

Номер: AU2018222920B2
Принадлежит: Hewlett Packard Development Co LP

PRINTHEAD EMPLOYING DATA PACKETS INCLUDING ADDRESS DATA Abstract A printhead including an address line for communicating a set of addresses and a number of primitives, each primitive including a plurality of controllable switches coupled to the address line, each switch corresponding to at least one address of the set of addresses, each address corresponding to one of a number of primitive functions. A buffer receives a series of data packets, each data packet including address bits representative of one address of the set of addresses. Address logic receives the address bits from the buffer, wherein for each data packet the address logic encodes the address represented by the address bits onto the address line, and wherein the at least one switch corresponding to the address activates the primitive function corresponding to address.
