A semiactive control policy operates to set the damper force to a low magnitude when the relative position of the suspension members is within a "null band," and to a high magnitude when the relative position is within an "overshoot" band. The null band is a predefined range of displacement about the equilibrium position of the members and the overshoot band is a range about the end stops. When in the overshoot band, the high damper force limits the incidence of suspension end stop collisions that cause damaging shock inputs to the system. The method and apparatus for controlling shock absorbers is disclosed. The shock absorber comprises a pressure balanced shutter sleeve disposed within the piston rod of the shock absorber. The shutter sleeve has a plurality of flow passages in fluid communication with the lower portion of the working chamber. The shock absorber further comprises an orifice sleeve disposed within the piston rod and being displaceable with respect to the shutter sleeve. The orifice sleeve has a plurality of flow passages in fluid communication with the upper portion of the working chamber. The shock absorber further comprises an actuator for applying torque to the shutter sleeve as well as control means for controlling the application of torque by the actuator.

In controlling a damper of a vehicular suspension, when the vehicle runs on a paved road and a frequency at which the detected unsprung mass acceleration exceeds a dead zone is below a set value, the damping force characteristic is optimally controlled in a predetermined variable range. When the vehicle runs on a rough road and a frequency at which the detected acceleration exceeds the dead zone is above the set value, a minimum damping force limit of the predetermined variable range of the damping force characteristic is shifted toward a relatively high damping force side. The dead zone is set with an average value of the acceleration of an unsprung mass as a center. Hence, when the vehicle turns and zigzags, the vehicular body is inclined so that an absolute value of the unsprung mass acceleration is largely changed. Accordingly, the average value of the acceleration is changed and the dead zone is shifted. However, the frequency at which the unsprung mass acceleration exceeds the dead zone accurately corresponds to a situation on a road surface and the damping force characteristic is accurately controlled according to the road surface condition, without influence from the vehicular change in posture. <IMAGE>

The control regulates the bouncing, pitching and rolling of the suspension w.r.t. the speed of the vehicle and the steering setting. The control provides a correction signal for bouncing, to overlay the overall control of the dampers. The control unit (4) has an interface circuit, CPU and a drive circuit. The bypass for tension and compression operation of the vibration damper is controlled by the electromagnet (5) across a valve slide (6), so that the bypass flow results thorugh the throttle valve body, with the spring (32) pressing the valve slider downwards, and the opening (29) frees the pressure stage bypass duct (21). The valve slider (6) is designed as a tube, and the piston rod (2) or a piston rod extension (3) is arranged longitudinally movable inside a longitudinal bore (3). The switching position with no current supplied to the electromagnet (5), effects the shock absorber characteristic hard extension stage, soft compression stage. With current supplied to electromagnet (5), corresp. extension stage is soft and compression stage is hard. ADVANTAGE - Developed as small unit, which ensures that large flow cross section is attained for bypass.

In one embodiment, the application does not communicate with sensors on the vehicle. In another embodiment, the application may communicate with various sensors located on the vehicle to provide feedback to the device during the setup routine. In one embodiment, the device may analyze a digital image of a suspension component to provide feedback about a physical characteristic of the component.

A hydraulic shock absorber includes a generally vertical cylinder receiving therein hydraulic liquid, a piston working in the cyliner and partioning the interior thereof into two liquid chambers, an upper and a lower chamber. An improved damping control is achieved by a circuit (10) forming a connection between the two liquid chambers (1, 2), a further circuit (9) connecting the reservoir (3) to the lower liquid chamber (2), each of the two circuits (9, 10) including a controllable first check valve (C1) and second check valve (C2), respectively, that can each take two states of operation under the action of a control means (20), in a first state locking the valve in a closed position cutting off the forward flow (E1 and E2 repectively) through the check valve (C1 and C2 respectively), and in a second state allowing a free forward flow (E1 and E2 respectively) through the check valve (C1 and C2 respectively), whereas the check valve (C1, C2) in the first state as well as in the second state block the reverse flow (D1 and D2 respectively) of both circuits (9, 10).
