[Also in Division G2] A web of material such as photographic paper is obtained in contact with a conveyer belt as it passes round a roller by providing a magnet in the said roller, and attaching magnetically responsive means to the leading edge of the web. Fig. 1 shows a drying machine for photographic paper, although the device is applicable to other photographic processing machines. As shown, the exposed and developed strip 11 is fed into the nip 11b between an endless belt 4 and a heated drum 1. It is carried round in contact with the drum, and leaves it at the top, where the belt traverses a roller 10. The strip or web 11 would tend here to fall away from the belt, but it is desired that it should remain in contact with the belt so as to be conveyed round roller 10 and on to a take-up reel 12. As shown in Fig. 2, two pairs of magnetic discs 14, each pair separated by a brass disc 15, are fitted on the shaft 13 of roller 10 (since in fact two webs 11 may be conveyed simultaneously). The leading edge of the web has attached thereto a strip 25 of iron or other magnetic material (Fig. 5). Thus the leading edge is retained in contact with the belt as it passes round roller 10. Co-operating with roller 10 is a pressure roller 18 having a soft iron core jacketed with soft rubber.
