The base (33) on which the sliver (2) rests is held in position by supports (4) inside the can that move downwards as the can fills. The height of the supports is controlled from outside the can and all supports are maintained at the same height by forces on both sides of the can wall (32). In the bottom position the supports (4) move into a recess (110) in the floor and the can base rests on ribs (34) to allow the can to be moved away. Independent claims are included for two alternative designs for controlling the position of the supports (4). The supports can be driven by spring-loaded motor-driven rollers (44) running inside the can. The movement of the contact roll (15a) and the accompanying roll (15b) is carried out by means of electric actuators (18a, 18b).

A line winding apparatus bobbin for storing filamentary material comprises a filamentary material support surface 2 having an anchor 11 for the filamentary material located behind an opening 3 at a circumferential position in the filamentary material support surface. The anchor may be a discrete element which is removably inserted into a cavity 5 in the bobbin so as to receive and retain a loop of filamentary material passed through the opening in the filamentary material support surface. The anchor, which may be a pin, may be insertable into the cavity through a port 6 in, or accessible from, an end of the bobbin and may be retained by a friction fit with the inner surface of the cavity. One end surface of the bobbin may be provided with an interlock formation 9 which may engage with a complementary second interlock formation 10 on an end surface of another, identical bobbin so that two or more bobbins may be coupled together along a common axis. The interlock formations may be arranged so that when two or more bobbins are coupled together their respective openings are in line. A line winding apparatus may comprise a spindle 21/22/23 passing through one or more coupled bobbins, at least one handle 13 and/or a ground stake 33 having a pointed end 200 facilitating driving the stake into the ground. In use, the line winding apparatus is particularly suited for the concerted release and retrieval of plural lines, such as kite lines. The line winding apparatus allows line to be payed out and rewound without causing the line to become twisted.
