Cellulose ethers are prepared from material such as cotton, wood-cellulose, or sulphite-or sodium cellulose by subjecting the raw material to a short preliminary treatment with alkali lyes so as to remove oxycellulose, hemicellulose, pentoses, mannan, and xylan, washing with water till neutral, repeating this preliminary treatment if desired, drying, preparing alkali cellulose without introducing any ripening process, and etherifying with an ester of an inorganic acid. The alkali lye for the preparation of the alkali cellulose, and the etherifying agent are used in about or slightly above the theoretical amount. An example is given of the preparation of ethyl cellulose, the preliminary treatment with the caustic soda of 20-25 DEG B<\>e being repeated 4 to 5 times. The ethyl cellulose possesses a high viscosity and may be used in the preparation of films, insulating materials, lacquers, and plastic masses. Cellulose derivatives obtained from the treated cotton show less tendency to discoloration on moulding than those obtained from cotton which has not been treated in this manner. Method for activation of cellulose by steam explosion involves the following steps: mixing cellulose-containing material in an alkaline solution, blowing with nitrogen, heating to required temperature for 20–30 minutes, holding under excess pressure, complete depressurisation during 10 s, washing with water and drying. Pressure is released via drain valve with safety net. Cellulose ethers can be obtained from cellulose obtained using said method: methylhydroxypropyl cellulose, oxypropyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, methyl cellulose, cyanoethyl cellulose. Cellulose ethers serve as thickeners, stabilizers and precursors and can be used in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic, printing and other industries. During treatment of cellulose material, due to sharp opening of drain valve, pressure in device performing thermal exposure sharply decreases, due to which instantaneous effervescence of liquid phase throughout the volume, including inside plant fibers, with formation of steam. Hydrolysis liquid in form of steam is ejected via drain valve, and cellulose fibers remain in the device performing thermal exposure under pressure, due to available safety net. Cellulosic material is contacted with aqueous alkali in the presence of an inert organic diluent at temperatures of from 0 DEG to 30 DEG C. for 1 to 3 hours, the weight ratio of diluent to cellulosic material being from 6 to 19 parts diluent to one part cellulosic material, said diluent comprising by volume (a) 70-96% of a water miscible inert organic compound selected from aliphatic alcohols having 2-5 carbon atoms, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone, (b) 0-16% of a second water miscible inert organic compound different from (a) and consisting of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, or acetone, and (c) 4-15% water, the resulting alkali cellulose being etherified if desired to form the ether. A preferred diluent composition consists of isopropyl alcohol or tertiary butyl alcohol or a mixture of either of these alcohols with methyl or ethyl alcohol. Disclosed is a method for producing cellulose derivatives wherein cellulose is impregnated with an alkali solution, the impregnated cellulose is selectably pressed out, and the cellulose undergoes a substitution or addition reaction, whereby the cellulose derivative is obtained with a degree of substitution DS. The applied cellulose is an ammonia activated cellulose. The molar ratio of the alkali to the AHG (anhydro glucose unit) in the cellulose at the beginning of the substitution or addition reaction does not exceed twice the valve of the desired DS. For the swelling of cellulose, no excess of alkali is required, which does not react to produce alkali cellulose but only adheres to the cellulose as a loose association product. Reagent consumption in the substitution or addition reaction is lower. Fewer secondary products are formed.

The present invention describes an advantageous and effective process for obtaining carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) from agro-industrial residues, comprising the steps of a) Preparing the raw material, wherein the raw material is washed, dried, grounded and washed again; b) a pumping step, wherein the product obtained from the step a) is reacted with sodium hydroxide; c) a synthesis step, wherein consists in grounding the pulp; adding a solution of isopropanol and distilled water under stirring at room temperature; adding NaOH aqueous solution up to the alkalization of the mixture; adding monochloroacetic acid in isopropanol; filtrating; suspending in methanol solution and neutralizing with acetic acid. The present invention also relates to the CMC obtained from the said process which can be employed in a several industrial processes.

The present disclosure relates to a superabsorbent polymer gel derived from renewable and biodegradable materials such as carboxyalkyl cellulose (CAC). The CAC had a degree of substitution (DS) of 0.5 < DS < 1. The carboxyalkyl cellulose was partially or fully solubilized in alkaline solution and crosslinked with a crosslinker to yield a crosslinked polycarboxy-material with high Water Retention Value (WRV) of at least 118 g/g saline water (0.9 % sodium chloride solution) and Centrifuge Retention Capacity (CRC) of at least 90 g saline water/g superabsorbent material.

The activated polysaccharides display higher reactivity and improved elimination of reagents during acylation, alkylation, silylation, xanthogenation and carbomoylation with largely homogeneous reaction processes.

There is disclosed a process for the derivatization of cellulose comprising the sequential steps: a) mixing cellulose with a viscosity below 900 ml/g with an aqueous solution to obtain a liquid, wherein particles comprising cellulose in said liquid have a diameter of maximum 200 nm, wherein the temperature of the aqueous solution is below 20° C., and wherein the pH of the aqueous solution is above 12, b) subjecting the liquid to at least one of the steps: i) decreasing the pH of the liquid with at least 1 pH unit, ii) increasing the temperature by at least 20° C., and c) derivatization of the cellulose. Advantages include that there is provided the possibility to derivatize cellulose faster and to a greater extent after the treatment. Further the yield is improved. The product quality is improved and the manufacture is cheaper and easier.

The present invention relates to (1) a process for producing a hydroxyalkyl cellulose having an excellent water-solubility while maintaining a high reaction selectivity by adding a basic compound and an alkyleneoxide to a cellulose to conduct a reaction therebetween in which the basic compound is added in a total amount of from 0.3 to 1.5 mol per 1 mol of an anhydroglucose unit in the cellulose, and the alkyleneoxide is added in a total amount of from 1.0 to 3.0 mol per 1 mol of an anhydroglucose unit in the cellulose, the process including a step of adding the basic compound in an amount of from 50 to 95% of the total amount of the basic compound to be added during the process, and then adding the alkyleneoxide in an amount of from 30 to 80% of the total amount of the alkyleneoxide to be added during the process to react the compounds with the cellulose, thereby obtaining a reaction mixture; and a step of adding a remaining amount of the basic compound and a remaining amount of the alkyleneoxide to the reaction mixture obtained in the previous step to conduct a reaction therebetween; (2) a hydroxyalkyl cellulose produced by the process; and (3) a process for producing a cationized hydroxyalkyl cellulose using the resulting hydroxyalkyl cellulose.

There is disclosed a process for the derivatization of cellulose comprising the sequential steps: a) mixing cellulose with a viscosity below 900 ml/g with an aqueous solution to obtain a liquid, wherein particles comprising cellulose in said liquid have a diameter of maximum 200 nm, wherein the temperature of the aqueous solution is below 20°C, and wherein the pH of the aqueous solution is above 12, b) subjecting the liquid to at least one of the steps: i) decreasing the pH of the liquid with at least 1 pH unit, ii) increasing the temperature by at least 20°C, and c) derivatization of the cellulose. Advantages include that there is provided the possibility to derivatize cellulose faster and to a greater extent after the treatment. Further the yield is improved. The product quality is improved and the manufacture is cheaper and easier.

Cellulose ethers are prepared by acting on cellulose with a compound of copper in the presence of an alkali to form an alkali copper cellulose, and treating this with an alkylating or aralkylating agent in the presence of free alkali. The alkli copper cellulose, e.g. sodium cupric cellulose may be obtained by the action of caustic alkali and copper hydroxide on cellulose, by causing cellulose to absorb caustic alkali in excess and working up with finely powdered copper salt, or by impregnating cellulose with a copper salt solution and treating the mixture with caustic alkali. The product, with or without partial separation of the excess caustic alkali is treated with the alkylating agent, and the cellulose ether separated by treatment either with hydrochloric acid or a solution of alkali bisulphate. Separation of the ether in flakes may be assisted by using the hydrochloric acid or bisulphate solution hot, or by adding also salts such as magnesium or alkali sulphate. The cellulose ethers may be used for the manufacture of films, lacquers, filaments, glue-like liquids, or as starting materials for the manufacture of nitro, acetyl, and similar compounds. The following examples are given: (1) sulphite wood pulp is mixed with powdered cupric chloride and introduced into caustic soda solution. The sodium cupric cellulose formed is alkylated with methyl sulphate; (2) the cellulose is separated into fibres, treated with caustic soda solution and worked with cupric chloride. The sodium cupric cellulose is treated with methyl sulphate and the product separated by means of alcohol containing hydrochloric acid; (3) sodium cupric cellulose is treated with methyl sulphate in toluene and the product separated by means of dilute sulphuric acid or a solution of sodium bisulphate and magnesium sulphate; (4) sodium cupric cellulose is treated with methyl sulphate in small portions and the methyl cellulose separated by filtering and treating with methanol containing hydrochloric acid. ...
