A flame retardant material comprises a phosphorus-containing material which decomposes to produce phosphoric acid when exposed to flame, and an oxygenated heterocyclic thermoplastic resin. The phosphorus-containing substance may be selected from melamine phosphate or polyphosphates of ammonium, sodium, potassium or melamine. Preferably the phosphorus-containing material is a mixture of ammonium polyphosphate and melamine phosphate. The oxygenated heterocyclic thermoplastic resin is preferably an aldehyde and is preferably a condensation product of urea, formaldehyde and, optionally, isobutyraldehyde. A blowing agent such as melamine or urea may be included. Preferably the phosphorus-containing matrial and/or the blowing agent are encapsulated in the resin. Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers, paper, reconstituted wood products and solvents may comprise the flame retardant material.

Polyolefin articles of improved dyeaffinity are obtained by addition of an ester of an oxyacid of phosphorus or sulphur followed by treatment with an amine which reacts with the ester to form a quaternary ammonium salt. The polyolefin may be derived from ethylene and/or propylene (e.g. isotactic polypropylene), and the specified esters are phosphates, phosphonates, phosphinates, sulphonates and sulphates, in particular methyl bis(p-methoxycarbonyl phenyl) phosphate, methyl toluenep-sulphonate, dimethyl naphthalene 1,5-disulphonate, cetyl methyl sulphate and methyl diphenyl phosphinate. The amines disclosed are trioctylamine, trinonylamine, tridecylamine and cetyldimethylamine. The products may be formed into film, fibre and filaments (which may be drawn), and may be dyed with acid or disperse dyestuffs. Applications specified are carpets, blankets, garments, furs, velvets, furnishing fabrics, knitted articles and non-woven fabrics. Specification 810,023 is referred to.

The present invention relates to a halogen-free thermosetting resin composition and also a prepreg and a laminate for printed circuits prepared from the halogen-free thermosetting resin composition. The halogen-free thermosetting resin composition comprises, based on 100 parts by weight of organic solids, (A) from 30 to 60 parts by weight of a halogen-free epoxy resin, (B) from 20 to 50 parts by weight of a compound containing dihydrobenzoxazine ring, (C) from 10 to 40 parts by weight of a phosphorus-containing bisphenol curing agent. The prepreg and laminate for printed circuits prepared from the halogen-free thermosetting resin composition according to the present invention have high glass transition temperature, excellent dielectric properties, low water absorption, high thermal resistance and better processability, and can fulfill halogen-free flame retardancy and achieve UL94 V-0 grade.

A process for the manufacture of ultra-fine particles of a high performance polymer in a yield greater than 90% , comprising:a. dissolving the high performance polymer in an organic solvent capable of dissolving the polymer to form a solution;b. emulsifying the solution by combining the solution with water and a surfactant to form an emulsion;c. transferring the emulsion into a receiving water containing a surfactant to remove the organic solvent and form a slurry; and,d. recovering particles of <75-micron diameter in a yield greater than 90%.2. The present document describes a polyamide hot-melt resin having a chemical structure consisting of dimerized fatty acids and diamines, loaded with an active ingredient. An fibrous insulation product is provided that includes a binder comprising a polyol and a phosphorus crosslinking agent derived from a phosphonic or phosphoric acid, salt, ester or anhydride to form crosslinked phosphodiester linkages. The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of an epoxy-functional polyester. The process according to the invention comprises the steps of a) providing a polyester having functional groups selected from hydroxyl groups and carboxylic acid groups, or mixtures thereof, b) reacting the functional groups of the polyester with an epihaloalkane to obtain an epoxy-functional polyester dissolved in a liquid phase, c) optionally adding an organic solvent to the liquid phase obtained in step b); d) precipitating the epoxy-functional polyester from the liquid phase obtained in step b) or in step c); and e) isolating the precipitated epoxy-functional polyester from the liquid phase by a solid-liquid separation technique. The thus obtained resin is in particular useful for use in powder coatings. The invention further relates to a solid epoxy-functional polyester obtainable by such process and to a coating composition, in particular a powder coating composition, comprising such solid epoxy-functional polyester.

Improved polypropylene fibers exhibiting greatly reduced heat- and moisture-shrink problems and including certain compounds that quickly and effectively provide rigidity to the target polypropylene fiber after heat-setting are disclosed herein. In such a manner, the “rigidifying” compounds provide nucleation sites for polypropylene crystal growth. After drawing the nucleated composition into fiber form, the fiber is then exposed to sufficient heat to grow the crystalline network, thus holding the fiber in a desired position. The preferred “rigidifying” compounds include dibenzylidene sorbitol based compounds, as well as less preferred compounds, such as sodium beuzoate, certain sodium and lithium phosphate salts (such as sodium 2,2′-methylene-bis-(4,6-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphate, otherwise known as NA-11).

A synthetic polymer foam is produced which incorporates fine particles of expandable graphite which surprisingly impart excellent fire resistant properties to the foam, particularly to foam made with a non-halogenated hydrocarbon as the primary blowing agent. For best results, the foam is produced through mixing the constituent materials, including the expandable graphite using a screw extruder. The foam can also be produced by creating a graphite/polyol or graphite/isocyanate dispersion in an extruder then mixing the remaining components in a conventional batch mixing or high pressure spraying process. Alternatively, conventional mixing can be used for the entire process, but use of a screw extruder in whole or in part is preferred.

The flame retardant components may be present in an amount from about 5 to about 40 weight percent of the phosphinate compound; from about 5 to about 20 weight percent of the phosphate compound, and from about 0.1 to about 15 weight percent of the polyhydric alcohol, based on the total weight of the TPU composition. Processes are disclosed to make the TPU compositions and to make wire and cable constructions employing the TPU compositions as the jacket of the wire and cable constructions. The TPU compositions exhibit excellent flame retardant capabilities as measured by Limited Oxygen Index testing and/or UL 94 Vertical Burn tests.

Una composición resinosa retardante de la llama que comprende (i) al menos un policarbonato aromático; (ii) al menos uno de un segundo polímero que posee unidades estructurales derivadas de uno o más monómeros seleccionados entre el grupo formado por monómeros aromáticos de vinilo, monómeros de nitrilo monoetilénicamente insaturados, y monómeros de (met)acrilato de alquilo C1 a C12; (iii) al menos un copolímero de injerto modificado con caucho; (iv) al menos una especie de fósforo orgánico polimérica o no polimérica; (v) al menos un agente antigoteo; y (vi) al menos una sal de perfluoroalcanosulfonato presente en una cantidad que varía entre 0, 01% en peso y 0, 25% en peso, basada en el peso de toda la composición.
