Биосовместимость многих полимеров улучшается при смешивании с ними полимера, включающего цвиттер-ионные группы. Обычно цвиттер-ионная группа представляет собой аммоний-фосфатную эфирную цвиттер-ионную группу, и полимер, содержащий ее, может быть получен путем свободно-радикальной полимеризации этилен-ненасыщенных мономеров, включая мономер, содержащий цвиттер-ионную группу. Смешение двух полимеров можно осуществить путем сухого смешивания полимерных частиц или путем перемешивания полимеров в жидкой дисперсной системе или в растворе с последующим удалением жидкой среды. Абсорбцию фибриногена и/или активацию тромбоцитов полимерами ножно снизить до величин, составляющих менее 80% или менее 60% от базового полимера, путем введения полимера, содержащего цвиттер-ионную группу, в количестве более 10% или более 30%. Предпочтительными композициями являются сополимеры внутренней соли -2-(метакрилоилоксиэтил)-2'-(триметиламмоний)этилфосфата с высшим алкил(мет)акрилатом, смешанные с олефиновыми полимерами и/или латексами каучука. Tunable negative thermal expansion linear polymer materials with reversible large-scale mechanoresponse under low-energy stimulation and fabrication methods are provided. The reversible thermal contraction of the material is due to a molecular switch, s-dibenzocyclooctadiene (DBCOD), which undergoes a twist-boat to chair conformational change when heated or radiated by near-infrared light. The DBCOD moieties are present as either crosslinkers or polymer main-chain units and the corresponding polymers can have different amounts of DBCOD units in the polymer main chain. The various DBCOD monomers can be covalently incorporated into a variety of polymeric materials to construct negative thermal expansion or zero expansion materials for the specific applications. 1. Blending of the two polymers may be achieved by dry blending particulate polymers or by mixing the polymers in liquid dispersion or solution followed by removal of the liquid medium. The fibrinogen absorption and/or platelet activation of polymers may be reduced to a value of less than 80% or even less than 60% of the base polymer by introducing amounts of more than 10% or more than 30% of the zwitterionic group containing polymer.

The present invention is directed to a novel high temperature polymerization process operating at high pressures for producing a polymer. The process includes conveying hybrid reactor mixtures, which include one or more hybrid reactor monomers and one or more hybrid reactor initiators to one or more hybrid reactors. The hybrid reactors are maintained at effective hybrid polymerization temperatures and sub-reflux polymerization gage pressures to cause polymerization of a portion of the hybrid reactor monomers into the polymer. The process further includes conveying hybrid reactor contents from the hybrid reactors to one or more batch reactors maintained at effective batch polymerization temperatures and reflux polymerization pressures to cause polymerization of a remaining portion of the hybrid reactor monomers into the polymer. The hybrid reactors are smaller in volume than the batch reactors. By utilizing the hybrid/batch reactor combination, the process of the present invention can be operated under safe working conditions. The process of the present invention also allows control of the polydispersity and molecular weight of the resulting polymers. As a result, the polymers made therefrom can be used as binders in compositions, such as coating compositions used in the automotive refinish and OEM applications having desired coating properties. The present invention is also directed to a polymerization system used in the process of the present invention.

The composition is stable towards UV radiation such that is useful for any number of articles such as automotive components and other articles that are, for example, injection molded.
