The present invention relates to an improved formaldehyde-free coated fibrous substrate. The coating includes a crosslinked binder system which forms three dimensional networks when heat cured. After the coating is applied to the back of fibrous substrate and cured, the coating is capable of hygroscopic expansion which imparts excellent anti-sag properties. The coating is compatible with other coating systems with neutral or mild alkaline pH. The improvement being the binding system is neutralized with a volatile base so that it evaporates quickly so as not to hinder the cross-linking reaction.

A curable aqueous binder has two primary components. The first component is a bio-based material or mixture of bio-based materials such as starch or polyvinyl alcohol. The second component is one or more compounds selected from the group of urea, polyurea and substituted urea. The first and second components make up most (i.e. 50% or more) of all solids in the binder. The dry weight of the second component is preferably 25% or more of the dry weight of the first component. The solids content of the binder is preferably between 6 wt % and 20 wt %. A method of making a mineral fiber product includes a step of curing a binder as described above in situ on a mass of mineral fibers at a temperature of 175 degrees C. or more. A preferred binder is a mixture of urea and starch in a ratio by weight between 50-50 and 80-20 in water at a solids content of 10-20 wt %, substantially without other components, and may be used as a replacement for formaldehyde or petrochemical based resins. The starch is preferably cooked, thermoplastic or nanoparticle starch.

The present invention provides a polyacrylic acid copolymer emulsion, an organic-inorganic composite waterproof coating, preparation method thereof, and a waterproof coiled material. It can solve the problem that the granules dropping out from the prior waterproof membrane easily. A film forming composition comprises a first non-crosslinking polyamide/polyacrylate copolymer comprising at least one amide monomer; (meth)acrylate monomers; monomers having at least one carboxylic functional group; and monomers having at least one amine functional group. The film forming composition also comprises a second non-crosslinking polyamide copolymer comprising at least one amide; at least one quaternary ammonium containing monomer; and monomers having at least one amine functional group. Preferably, the film forming composition is essentially free of glycerin or glycerol. 2. Polymer particles containing a polyoxymethylene polymer for coating metallic substrates are described. The polymeric particles contain a polyoxymethylene polymer in combination with an adhesion promoter which may comprise an acid modified polyolefin and performance enhancing additives. The polyoxymethylene polymer and the adhesion promoter may also be combined with a thermoplastic elastomer and optionally a coupling agent. Also disclosed is a process where the polymeric particles are used to from a fluidized bed for coating metallic substrates. In one embodiment, after being coated with the polymer particles, the coated metal substrate is gas cooled followed by cooling the coated substrate in a bath containing an aqueous medium.

The invention describes new designs of commercial inkjet or flexographic web and sheet fed presses with pre-coating prior to printing which may upgrade the quality of the substrates and render them printable by all printing technologies including inkjet and digital. Also described are curable water-based coatings, inkjet and flexographic inks and overprint varnishes which may be radiation cured at high speed without the need for external applied heat to remove water. When used as coatings or primers, the compositions of the invention may create a surface on cellulosic substrates, polymeric films and some metal surfaces which are suitable for printing on by most printing methods including but not limited to inkjet, wet and dry toner systems, lithographic, gravure, flexographic and 4-D printing. The primer/coatings may also add up to 35% tensile strength to lightweight “thin” papers. The primer/coatings, inks and overprint varnishes can be cured by UV with or without the need for added commercial and/or conventional photoinitiators and the same formulations can be cured with electron beam using less than 35% of the energy required for conventional EB coatings and inks and without the need for a nitrogen environment thus allowing EB cure sheet fed printing. The primer/coatings of the invention may allow multi-colour printing on lightweight papers by conventional water-based inkjet inks that could previously not be printed with this method. Overprint varnishes of the invention can be applied successfully in-line on the printing press over wet inks before being EB or UV cured. 1.
