The present invention provides two methods for synthesizing novel titania-polyurethane (nTiO 2 -PU) nanocomposites for self-cleaning coatings, one a polymer functionalization method (“grafting to”) and the other, a monomer functionalization method (“grafting from”). Here, 2,2 bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (HMPA) was used as the coordination agent, which was reacted with n-TiO 2 (50:50 anatase/rutile) to form nTiO 2 -HMPA, then polymerized in the monomer functionalization method. In the polymer functionalization method, HMPA was reacted with a pre-polymer to form the PU, and then subsequently reacted with n-TiO 2 to form the polymer nanocomposite. The photocatalytic cleanability of the nanocomposites was investigated when exposed to ultraviolet radiation using additional unreacted HMPA or stearic acid as the model “dirt” compounds. Nanocomposites prepared using both strategies showed similar self-cleaning behavior, although the monomer technique gave less substrate degradation.

Silicon/germanium nanoparticle inks, laser pyrolysis reactors for the synthesis of nanoparticles and associated methods

Laser pyrolysis reactor designs and corresponding reactant inlet nozzles are described to provide desirable particle quenching that is particularly suitable for the synthesis of elemental silicon particles. In particular, the nozzles can have a design to encourage nucleation and quenching with inert gas based on a significant flow of inert gas surrounding the reactant precursor flow and with a large inert entrainment flow effectively surrounding the reactant precursor and quench gas flows. Improved silicon nanoparticle inks are described that has silicon nanoparticles without any surface modification with organic compounds. The silicon ink properties can be engineered for particular printing applications, such as inkjet printing, gravure printing or screen printing. Appropriate processing methods are described to provide flexibility for ink designs without surface modifying the silicon nanoparticles.

In an embodiment, a method for making an infrared radiation absorbing coating comprises: forming an ITO coating mixture comprising ITO and a first coating matrix, wherein the first coating matrix comprises the partial condensate of a silanol of the formula R n Si(OH) 4-n , where n equals 1 or 2, and wherein R is selected from a C 1-3 alkyl radical, a vinyl radical, a 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl radical, a gamma-glycidoxypropyl radical, and a gamma-methacryloxypropyl radical, wherein the ITO coating mixture is free of colloidal silica; forming a colloidal silica coating mixture comprising colloidal silica and a second coating matrix, wherein the second coating matrix comprises the partial condensate of a silanol of the formula R n Si(OH) 4-n , where n equals 1 or 2, and wherein R is selected from an alkyl radical of 1 to 3 inclusive carbon atoms, a vinyl radical, a 3,3,3-trifluoropropyl radical, a gamma-glycidoxypropyl radical, and a gamma-methacryloxypropyl radical; and mixing the ITO coating mixture with the colloidal silica coating mixture to form a combined mixture. The combined mixture does not comprise a precipitate visible to the unaided eye after 2 weeks without stirring.

Described herein, in the preferred embodiment, is a leonardite-based polyurethane resin binder that may be used, among other applications, as a binder in combination with foundry aggregate, e.g., sand, for molding or casting metal parts. The binders described herein comprise a humic substance, preferably leonardite, combined with a polymerizable polyol, an isocyanate, and a polymerization catalyst to make a polyurethane resin binder in situ in a foundry aggregate, such as sand. The lignite is mixed with the polymerizable polyol and dispersing agents as additives to improve the suspension quality and binder performance of the lignite-containing part of the binder components.

The resin tube and the insulated wire having an insulating coating are formed by using the flame-retardant, flexible resin composition as a material.

Films containing foamable inks or coatings and process for separating similar density materials

The present invention is directed to films that are deposited with foamable inks or coatings. One purpose is to facilitate their separation for recycling purposes. The films are particularly useful as packaging labels. The inks/coatings are designed so that foaming is activated when the film is in the hot-wash stage of a typical recycle process. This provides added buoyancy to the film allowing it to float to the surface and be removed, thereby significantly improving the efficiency of the recycle process. A feature of the invention is that, prior to this hot wash, the inks/coatings remain substantially unfoamed and thereby do not negatively affect the aesthetics of labeled package. The foamable inks/coatings can be used with any type of film.

In one embodiment, a method of manufacturing a composite structure in accordance with an embodiment of the invention includes producing a plurality of carbon nanotubes on one or both sides of a substrate, and attaching the substrate to a first fiber layer. The method can further include positioning a second fiber layer adjacent to the first fiber layer to position the plurality of carbon nanotubes between the first and second fiber layers. The method can additionally include infusing the first and second fiber layers with resin, and curing the resin. In one embodiment, the carbon nanotube substrate can be attached to the first fiber layer by melt-bonding. In another embodiment, the carbon nanotube substrate can be attached to the first fiber layer with stitches.

Alternatively, the diamino alcohol may be of Formula II: or salt thereof, wherein R 1 and R 2 are independently at each occurrence C 1 -C 6 alkyl; and R 3 is independently at each occurrence H or C 1 -C 6 alkyl. For example, the compound of Formula II may be 2,2′-((2-hydroxytrimethylene)diimino)bis(2-methyl-1-propanol).

The method includes: providing equivalence of an epoxy resin solution having a concentration exceeding 99 wt. % and acetone solution having a concentration of 40 wt. %, adding silane coupling agent-modified hexagonal boron nitride (BN) having a particle size of between 200 and 250 nm to the acetone solution and stirring; mixing the epoxy resin solution and the acetone solution and stirring, and dispersing the resulting mixture; adding to the mixture, low molecular weight polyamide resins as a curing agent, and stirring to uniformly disperse the curing agent; adding n-butane as a lubricant to the mixture and stirring, cooling the mixture to room temperature, adding di-n-butyl phthalate as a diluent to the mixture and stirring; and allowing the mixture to stand in a vacuum drier to remove bubbles to yield the insulating varnish, which is free of bubbles.
