Substantially water-free liq. lubricant for metal forming comprises (a) a lubricating oil and (b) phosphoric acid monoesters of formula ROP(=O)(OH)2, R=alkyl, alkylalkenyl or aryl. The lubricating oil may be mineral and/or synthetic. Pref. phosphate monoesters are monomethyl, monooctyl and monophenyl phosphate and 7 others. The esters may be dissolved, suspended or dispersed in the oil. The compsn. may further contain (c) (to assist film-forming) one or more of fatty acids (e.g. octanoic acid), fatty acid amides (e.g. dodecamide) and metal soaps; and (d) an emulsifier (e.g. polybutenylsuccinic acid amide), esp. where the phosphate ester is dispersed.
