The preferred grafting material is an ethylenically monounsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or an anhydride group.

Reaction of a carboxylic acid-containing polymer with certain aromatic amines results in dispersant viscosity modifiers with improved soot handling performance in heavy-duty diesel engines, compared with reaction with non-aromatic amines.

Methods are disclosed for making graft copolymers. The methods comprise the steps of: (a) providing (i) an ethylene/propylene (EP) copolymer or other graftable polymer, (ii) an ethylenically unsaturated sulfur-, nitrogen- and/or oxygen-containing monomer, and (iii) an amount of an initiator sufficient to graft said monomer and EP copolymer or other graftable polymer, (b) introducing said EP copolymer or other graftable polymer into an extruder, (c) introducing said monomer into the extruder, (d) introducing said initiator into the extruder; wherein at least one of the above-identified reactants in (a) is introduced in the presence of a polar solvent; and (e) reacting said EP copolymer or other graftable polymer, monomer and initiator by operating said extruder, thereby forming the graft copolymer. This invention also relates to methods of making a dispersant viscosity index improver and methods for making a lubricating oil. A biodegradable synthetic ester base stock which comprises a blend of the following base stocks: (A) the reaction product of: (1) a branched or linear alcohol having the general formula R(OH) n , wherein R is an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic group having from about 2 to 20 carbon atoms and n is at least 2; and (2) mixed acids comprising about 30 to 80 molar % of a linear acid having a carbon number in the range between about C 5 to C 12 , and about 20 to 70 molar % of at least one branched acid having a carbon number in the range between about C 5 to C 10 and wherein no more than 10% of the branched acids used to form the biodegradable synthetic ester base stock contains a quaternary carbon; wherein the ester base stock exhibits the following properties: at least 60% biodegradation in 28 days as measured by the Modified Sturm test, a pour point of less than -25° C.; and a viscosity of less than 7500 cps at -25° C.; and (B) another base stock having at least 60% biodegradation in 28 days as measured by the Modified Sturm test; whereby the blended product has a biodegradation in 28 days as measured by the Modified Sturm test which is greater than either (A) or (B) alone.
