Oils for lubricants or for additions to other lubricating oils are manufactured by condensing aliphatic hydrocarbons of m.w. at least 170 and containing at least 13,5 parts of H for each 100 parts of C, or derivatives of such hydrocarbons containing O, in the presence of a small amount of isocyclic compounds containing at least three rings, and of a large amount of cyclic compounds containing one or two rings. The viscosity index of hydrocarbon lubricating-oils is raised with reduction or without undesirable rise in the pour-point by adding waxy hydrocarbons and up to 10 per cent of a substance depressing the pour-point. Radiation resistant lubricants are prepared by reacting 1 molecular proportion of biphenyl with 0.8 to 1.2 molecular proportions of propylene tetramer in the presence of 0.04 to 0.08 molecular proportions of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, e.g. aluminium chloride. The biphenyl is dissolved in an inert solvent, e.g. heptane, the catalyst is admixed at 80-100 DEG C., and then the propylene tetramer is added at 40-50 DEG C. during 1 to 6 hours. The temperature is then raised to 80-100 DEG C. for 7 to 10 hours and the product is obtained as a distillation fraction having an initial boiling point of at least 350 DEG C.

An oil soluble dispersant additive useful in oleaginous compositions selected from fuels and lubricating oils comprising the reaction products of: (i) at least one intermediate adduct comprised of the reaction products of (a) at least one polyanhydride, and (b) at least one member selected from the group consisting of polyamines, polyols, and amino alcohols; and (ii) at least one member selected from the group consisting of (a) at least one long chain hydrocarbyl substituted C4-C10 dicarboxylic acid producing material; (b) at least one long chain hydrocarbyl substituted hydroxy aromatic material and at least one aldehyde; or (c) at least one aldehyde and at least one reaction product of a hydrocarbyl substituted C3-C10 monocarboxylic or C4-C10 dicarboxylic acid or anhydride and an amine substituted hydroxy aromatic compound. Also disclosed are oleaginous compositions, particularly lubricating oil compositions, containing these oil soluble dispersants.

A lubricant formulation which is effective to remove or prevent carbon deposits in internal combustion engines has a solvency as defined by aniline point from about 20 to about 115, a volatility (as measured by NOACK) of less than 15%, an oxidative stability (as measured by PDSC) of above 40 minutes and a base oil viscosity of above 2 and below 10 cSt. The lubricant formulation can be formed from a blend of Group III, IV and V lubricants, in particularly polyalphaolefins, alkylated naphthalenes and polar Group V base stocks such as polyol esters. The carbon deposits can be removed from the engine piston by simply running the engine with the lubricant for one required cycle, or can be used continuously in the engine to prevent buildup.

The present invention concerns friction reducers for use in lubricating oil compositions which comprise certain groups of aromatic compounds, esters, narrow mixtures of base stocks, and/or amorphous polymers such as amorphous olefin copolymers. These compositions can provide substantial reductions in the coefficient of friction and fuel economy improving benefits when admixed to lubricating oils without deleterious effects such as instability, undesirable high viscosities and deposits. In one aspect of the invention, pentaerythritol esters and optionally triol esters are added to lubricating oil compositions to provide reduced friction and improved fuel economy. In a second aspect of the invention, similar results are obtained by adding hydrocarbyl aromatics to a lubricating oil composition containing one or more of Groups II and III base stock. In a third aspect, the invention concerns a lubricating oil composition comprising an amorphous olefin copolymer and one or more of Groups II and III base stocks. In one embodiment, the third aspect also includes one or more of hydrocarbyl aromatics and polyol esters as part of the composition. In a forth aspect, moderate concentrations of hydrocarbyl aromatics are used in a lubricating oil composition comprising paraffinic base oil stocks and preferably a borated polyisobutenyl succinimide ashless dispersant.

This invention is directed to passenger car engine oil compositions comprising in admixture 60 wt% to 90 wt% of a first base oil component, based on the total weight of the composition, the first base oil component consisting of a polyalphaolefin base stock or combination of polyalphaolefin base stocks, each having a kinematic viscosity at 100 °C of from 3.2 cSt to 3.8 cSt; 0.1 wt% to 20 wt% of a second base oil component, based on the total weigh t of the composition, the second base oil component consisting of a Group II, Group III or Group V base stock, or any combination thereof; and at least 0.75 wt% viscosity index improver, on a solid polymer basis; wherein the composition has a kinematic viscosity at 100 °C of from 5.6 to 16.3 cSt, a Noack volatility of less than 15 % as determined by ASTM D5800, a CCS viscosity of less than 6200 cP at -35 °C as determined by ASTM D5293, and an HTHS viscosity of from 2.5 mPa-s to 4.0 mPa-s at 150 °C as determined by ASTM D4683.

The process for producing the alkylaromatic compositions include contacting at least one an aromatic compound and a mono-olefin having a carbon atom number in the range between 12 to 40 in the presence of an acidic alkylation catalyst under alkylation conditions, wherein at least 50 mol% of the mono-olefin structure comprises a vinylidenyl structure, and thereby producing said alkylaromatic compound having at least 25 mol% of benzylic carbons that are quaternary. The alkylaromatic compositions disclosed herein are liquids that have improved thermo- and oxidative stability and pour point.

The use of sealants based on organosilanes for refrigeration and air conditioning systems is made possible by control of the rate of introduction and viscosity of the sealant mixture within certain ranges. An appropriate choice of organosilane sealant is made to allow effective sealing of small pinhole size leaks in the air conditioning or refrigeration system. The organosilane is then combined with a miscible lubricant at particular ratios to provide the proper mixture viscosity for injection into the refrigerant system to prevent bearing seizure. Specific orifice sizes are selected for an apparatus to ensure that the composition is injected at the flow rates required to prevent liquid slugging and subsequent compressor shutdown or failure. In addition, effective introduction of the mixture requires certain procedures be performed. Injection procedures are also described that prevent temporary or catastrophic equipment shutdown.
