A composition suitable for treating synthetic filaments prior to stretching comprises an aqueous emulsion containing a lubricating oil, a wax and one or more emulsifying agents. The lubricating oil may be a vegetable oil, a fish oil, a mineral oil having a viscosity varying between the kerosenes and heavy motor oils, examples being given, or a synthetic lubricant, e.g. polyalkylene glycols, esters formed from fatty acids containing 1-12 carbon atoms and alcohols containing 1-12 carbon atoms and phosphoric acid derivatives, many being exemplified, including tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphite. The wax may be oxidized or non-oxidized, suitable waxes being mentioned, polymers of ethylene oxide, terphenyls and polyalkylene hydrocarbons. The resulting materials may be further reacted with amines, alcohols, amino alcohols, boric acid, etc. to form dispersants.

Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

Condensation products made by reacting an α-hydroxyalkyl hydroxy-aromatic compound also having at least one non-fused hydrocarbyl substituent with at least one olefinic nitrile, carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid derivative are useful as additives for fuels and lubricants. The total number of carbon atoms in the non-fused hydrocarbyl substituents is at least about 7 while the αhydroxyalkyl group contains from 1 to about 36 carbons and the olefinic acid or nitrile reactant usually contains 2 to about 40 carbon atoms. Products made from hydroxymethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and α,β-olefinic acid derivatives such as maleic anhydride and particularly useful. Similarly useful post-treated products can be made from these condensation products by further reaction with alcohols, amines, metal salts or metals.

LOW ASH LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITIONS Abstract of the Disclosure Lubricant and functional fluids, and additive concentrates, are composed of a) at least one overbased zinc dialkyldithiophosphate characterized in that (i) each of the alkyl groups is a primary alkyl group containing from 6 to 10 carbonatoms, (ii) the overbased to neutral ratio of the dithiophosphate is 0.96 or above as determined by 31P nmr, (iii) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows less than about 0.25 area percent phosphorus at about 80 ppm, (iv) the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphate species at 5 to 15 ppm, and (v) the dithiophosphate exhibits a copper weight loss in ASTM Test Method D2619 of 0.70 maximum; b) at least one hindered phenolic antioxidant or at least one aromatic secondary amine antioxidant; and c) at least one overbased alkaline earth metal sulfurized alkyl phenate having a TBN as determined by ASTM Test Method D2896 of at least 200 or at least one alkaline earth metal allyl aromatic sulfonate. Preferred zinc dithiophosphates are further characterized in that the integrated 31P nmr spectrum of the dithiophosphate shows essentially no phosphorus species at 95 to 98 ppm. High thermal and oxidative ability is achieved.

[Also in Division C5] An oil-soluble polymer contains units derived from an oxygen-containing monomer grafted on to an oxidized, degraded interpolymer of ethylene and propylene, said oxidized, degraded interpolymer having a molecular weight of 1000 to 200,000 and being formed by contacting an ethylene-propylene interpolymer having a molecular weight of 50,000 to 800,000 with oxygen at a temperature of at least 100‹ C. for a period of time sufficient to effect a substantial reduction in the molecular weight of said interpolymer. The interpolymer, which is preferably derived from ethylene, propylene and a minor amount of a mono-olefin or polyene e.g. a non- conjugated diene, is oxidized and degraded by bubbling oxygen or air through a heated solution of the interpolymer, or by blowing air over the surface of the solution while the solution is subjected to shearing agitation. Alternatively, the degradation and grafting are effected simultaneously. Preferred graft monomers are vinyl esters of saturated carboxylic acids, N-vinyl lactams and N-oxohydrocarbon or sulphohydrocarbon acrylamides. In examples, (a) a degraded ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene interpolymer is grafted with diethylaminoethyl methacrylate or decyl methacrylate; and (b) a degraded ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene interpolymer is grafted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, N-vinylpyrrolidone, methacrylic acid, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate, an ester of methacrylic with an alcohol derived from a wax having a molecular weight of about 350, N - (1,1 - dimethyl - 3 - oxobutyl) acrylamide, a vinyl ester of a saturated carboxylic acid containing about 10 carbon atoms or 2 - acrylamido - 2 - methylpropane - 1 - sulphonic acid. The graft polymer obtained using methacrylic acid is reacted with N-(3-aminopropyl) morpholine. The graft polymers are incorporated in mineral oil lubricants.

The invention relates to the field of lubricating oils. Lubricating compositions with improved thermal stability and limited slip performance

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, (A) an hydrocarbyl phosphite, wherein each hydrocarbyl group is saturated and independently contains from about 12 to about 24 carbon atoms, (B) an organic polysulfide, and (C) (i) a borated overbased metal salt of an acidic organic compound, (ii) a combination of a borated dispersant and a phosphorus antiwear or extreme pressure agent selected from the group consisting of a phosphoric acid ester or salt thereof, a lower alkyl phosphite, and a phosphorus-containing carboxylic acid, ester, ether, or amide, or (iii) a mixture of (i) and (ii). These compositions provide improved frictional properties to lubricating composition while maintaining the extreme pressure protection of the lubricant. The lubricating compositions have good thermal stability.

Turbine Oil Compositions Abstract of Disclosure A lubricating oil composition, particularly suitable for use in steam turbines or gas turbines, is disclosed. The turbine oil composition comprises a major amount of a mineral or synthetic hydrocarbon base oil and an effective amount of a combination of the following materials: triphenyl phosphite or a trialkyl-substituted phenyl phosphite; diphenylamine or alkylated diphenylamine; phenyl .alpha.-naphthylamine, phenyl .beta.-naphthylamine, alkyl or alkaryl substituted phenyl .alpha.-naphthylamine, or alkyl or alkaryl substituted phenyl .beta.-naphthylamine; benzotriazole or alkyl-substituted benzotriazole; partial ester of alkyl or alkenyl succinic anhydride. In a preferred aspect, the turbine oil composition contains additionally an effective amount of a copolymer of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and an .alpha.-olefin.
