The present invention is a solid lubricant treatment medium, usually but not always in bead form, suitable to be brought into contact with lubricants to remediate and to condition them. A key feature of the medium, typically a polymeric resin, is the presence of relatively very large pores, which are able to capture and remove fine lubricant contaminants and breakdown products (such as small phosphate ester varnish, soot, coke, dissolved metal or other small semi-soluble or insoluble particles). Resins and adsorbents of the prior art have proven unable to remove fine contaminants like phosphate ester varnish that have a deleterious impact on industrial equipment performance and reliability. The mean pore size diameter of the medium is between about 8,000 Å and 100,000 Å and, more preferably, in the range of about 20,000 Å to about 80,000 Å. 1. A polymer resin medium for use in conditioning or remediating a lubricant , in which a quantity of polymer resin contains a plurality of pores and further wherein said pores have a mean diameter of between 8 ,000 and 100 ,000 Å as measured by mercury porosimetry.2. The polymer resin medium according to claim 1 , wherein said pores have a mean diameter of between 20 claim 1 ,000 and 80 claim 1 ,000 Å as measured by mercury porosimetry.3. Described is a polyester obtained by reacting a mixture comprising: a) adipic acid, b) 2-propyl-1-heptanol; and c) at least one polyol with a hydroxyl functionality ranging from ≥2 to ≤6, which is selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, 1,2-propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, bisphenol A, trimethylolpropane, glycerol, castor oil, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, dipentaerythritol and sucrose. Also described is a method of producing said polyester, comprising steps of: i) reacting a mixture comprising component a), component b) and component c) in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of titanium-containing compounds, zirconium-containing compounds and tin-containing compounds, ii) heating the mixture obtained in step i) to a temperature in the range of 80 °C to 160 °C at the first stage and then to a temperature in the range of 190 °C to 240 °C at the second stage, iii) vacuum treatment of the reaction mixture obtained in step ii), iv) cooling the reaction mixture obtained in step iii) to a temperature in the range of 20 °C to 90 °C and adding water to the reaction mixture and v) drying and purifying the reaction mixture obtained in step iv). A fluid composition suitable for use as an aircraft hydraulic fluid is disclosed. The fluid composition comprises a fire resistant phosphate ester base stock comprising between about 10% and about 100% by weight of a trialkyl phosphate, between about 0% and about 70% by weight of a dialkyl aryl phosphate, and from about 0% to about 25% by weight of an alkyl diaryl phosphate, with the proviso that the sum of the proportionate amount of each base stock component must equal 100%. The alkyl substituents of the trialkyl phosphate, the dialkyl aryl phosphate, and the alkyl diaryl phosphate contain between 3 and 8 carbon atoms, preferably between 4 and 8 carbon atoms, more preferably between 4 and 5 carbon atoms, and are bonded to the phosphate moiety via a primary carbon. It is still further preferred that the alkyl substituents of the trialkyl phosphate, the dialkyl aryl phosphate, and the alkyl diaryl phosphate are isoalkyl groups. The fluid composition further comprises an acid scavenger, an anti-erosion additive, a viscosity index improver, and an antioxidant. A novel additive combination comprises a high molecular weight butyl/hexyl methacrylate viscos ity index improver, a perfluoroalkylsulfonate anti-erosion additive, a 3,4-epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate or a diepoxide acid scavenger, a di(alkylphenyl)amine, and a phenolic antioxidant comprising a mixture of a 2,4,6-trialkylphenol and a hindered polyphenol compound selected from the group consisting of bis(3,5-dialkyl-4-hydroxyaryl)methane, 1,3,5-trialkyl-2,4,6-tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyaryl)benzene and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the fluid composition further comprises a benzotriazole derivative as a copper corrosion inhibitor, and a 4,5-dihydroimidazole derivative, as an iron cor rosion inhibitor and to enhance the stability of the fluid.

The methods and compositions of the invention are particularly useful in preventing stress cracking in polyethylene terephthalate beverage containers during bottling operations during which the bottle is contacted with aqueous and non-aqueous materials such as cleaners and lubricants that can interact with the polyester to cause stress cracking particularly in the container base. A process for lubricating a container, such as a beverage container, or a conveyor for containers, by applying to the container or conveyor, a thin continuous, substantially non-dripping layer of a liquid lubricant. The process provides many advantages compared to the use of a conventional dilute aqueous lubricant.

Oxidation-resistant cyclophosphazene fluid including triarylphosphine or phosphine oxide

The oxidation resistance of a cyclophosphazene-based fluid (such as a lubricant or a hydraulic fluid) can be improved by the addition to the fluid of an oxidation-inhibiting amount of an aryl phosphine or phosphine oxide. The aryl phosphine or phosphine oxide is preferably present in an amount of about 0.01 to about 5 percent by weight. The aryl phosphine or phosphine oxide can be (a) a symmetric triarylphosphine of formula R 3 P, wherein R is 4-trifluoromethyl phenyl, 3-trifluoromethyl phenyl, 3-trifluoromethoxy phenyl, 3-(3-trifluoromethylphenoxy) phenyl, 3-(perfluoro-2, 5-dimethyl-3, 6-dioxanonyl) phenyl or 1-naphthyl; (b) an oxide of any of these symmetric triarylphosphines; or (c) 1, 3-bis(diphenylphosphino) benzene. The cyclophosphazene fluid component is preferably a (fluorinated phenoxy) (3-perfluoroalkylphenoxy)-cyclic phosphazene of the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein n is 3 to 7, inclusive; wherein R is individually in each occurrence fluorinated phenoxy or 3-perfluoroalkylphenoxy; and wherein the ratio of fluorinated phenoxy to 3-perfluoroalkylphenoxy is about 1:5 to 1:1 inclusive. Although useful as antioxidants in other fluids such as polyphenyl ethers, perfluorinated aliphatic polyethers and polyol esters, the antioxidant activity of the defined aryl phosphines and phosphine oxides in cyclophosphazene fluids is unexpected because of the significant difference in the pathways of oxidative degradation between the cyclophosphazenes and these other fluids.

The disclosed aircraft hydraulic fluids contain from about 30 to about 45 weight percent, based on the total weight of the fluid, of tri-iso-butyl phosphate; from about 30 to about 45 weight percent, based on the total weight of the fluid, of tri-n-butyl phosphate; from about 10 to about 15 weight percent, based on the total weight of the fluid, of one or more triaryl phosphates; and an effective amount of a viscosity index improver, an acid control additive and an erosion inhibitor.

Thermally formed thermoplastic articles can be protected from stress cracking in the presence of stress cracking promoting compounds by forming a shaped article comprising a thermoplastic and a liquid hydrocarbon oil composition. We have found that the liquid hydrocarbon oil composition prevents the stress cracking promoting materials from interacting with the polymeric structure of the stressed container to prevent or inhibit stress cracking in such materials. The methods and compositions of the invention are particularly useful in preventing stress cracking in polyethylene terephthalate beverage containers during bottling operations during which the bottle is contacted with aqueous and non-aqueous materials such as cleaners and lubricants that can interact with the polyester to cause stress cracking particularly in the container base. A process for lubricating a container, such as a beverage container, or a conveyor for containers, by applying to the container or conveyor, a thin continuous, substantially non-dripping layer of a liquid lubricant. The process provides many advantages compared to the use of a conventional dilute aqueous lubricant.
