Phosphorus- and sulphur-containing reaction products are prepared by reacting a phosphorus sulphide with a cyclic ketone having at least 12 carbon atoms. The ketone may be derived from the condensation of acetone to high molecular weight isophorone type fractions; the hydrogenated condensation products may also be used, and other ketones mentioned are dibutyl cyclohexanone, alkyl substituted carvomenthone, menthone, pulegone, carvone and camphor. The phosphorus sulphide may be phosphorus pentasulphide or heptasulphide. The molecular ratio of phosphorus sulphide to ketone may be from 1 : 2 to 1 : 1.2. The reaction product may be sulphurized, and before or after sulphurization may be treated with a metal compound, ammonia or an organic base to form a salt. Greases comprising a base oil, a thickening agent, an organic molybdenum compound, and an organic zinc compound are also proposed. These greases exhibit smaller friction coefficients than conventional greases used for this purpose. On the homokinetic joint lubricated with the grease according to the present invention, the axial force produced is reduced and vibrations generated on the engine are absorbed. Lubricants which withstand high pressure consist of a hydrocarbon oil, a soluble lead compound and "corrosive" sulphur, the ratio of lead to "corrosive" sulphur being not substantially less than 6 to 1. "Corrosive" sulphur is that form which will discolour a copper surface, and the amount of "corrosive" sulphur in a compound is measured by the diminution of the sulphur contents which takes place by reaction with finely-divided metals such as copper, iron or mercury. Heavy petroleum residues may be used as base oils. Suitable sulphur-containing materials are elementary sulphur, synthetic organic polysulphides preferably penta - sulphides or higher polysulphides, sulphurized mineral, animal, vegetable or marine oils, such as lard oil, pine oils or fish oils. Suitable lead compounds are lead oleate, naphthenate or sulphonate or mixtures of these, or the lead salt of an acid derived by oxidation of paraffin or other hydrocarbon wax.

The lubricating oil may be mineral oil, fatty oils, oxidized mineral oils, synthetic ester oils (examples are given of di-, poly-, and complex esters) or mixtures thereof. The diesters may be mixed with polyglycols. The lubricants may also contain polybutene succinimides, polybutenes, polyacrylates, zinc dithiophosphates and diol esters.

A composition of an oil of lubricating viscosity, an antioxidant, an anti-nitration agent, and optionally a borated product of an epoxide or the reactive equivalent of an epoxide, provides a desirable lubricant for diesel or natural gas-fueled engines. The composition is substantially free from metals and preferably substantially free from phosphorus. The amount of the antioxidant the antinitration agent are sufficient to reduce the amount of varnish formation in a natural gas engine.

A clean performing gear oil for use in transmission oils and axle lubricants is provided. The gear oil having a Brookfield Viscosity at -12.degree.C ranging from about 1,000 to about 150,000 cP, comprises a base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100.degree.C ranging from about 4.0 to about 41.0 cSt. Combined with the base oil is preferably a dispersant pour point depressant and/or a dispersant viscosity index improver. In a further preferred embodiment, the gear oil is essentially devoid of carboxylic-type ashless dispersants (e.g., succinimide dispersants) and Mannich base dispersants, thus realizing a cost saving over conventional gear oils which are used as transmission and axle lubricants. Functionalized polymethylacrylates (PMA) are disclosed as agents that improve the properties of the gear oil and allow for the omission of conventional dispersants.

A lubricant formulation which is effective to remove or prevent carbon deposits in internal combustion engines has a solvency as defined by aniline point from about 20 to about 115, a volatility (as measured by NOACK) of less than 15%, an oxidative stability (as measured by PDSC) of above 40 minutes and a base oil viscosity of above 2 and below 10 cSt. The lubricant formulation can be formed from a blend of Group III, IV and V lubricants, in particularly polyalphaolefins, alkylated naphthalenes and polar Group V base stocks such as polyol esters. The carbon deposits can be removed from the engine piston by simply running the engine with the lubricant for one required cycle, or can be used continuously in the engine to prevent buildup.

An additive for a lubricating composition includes an ionic tetrahedral borate compound which includes a cation and a tetrahedral borate anion having a boron atom, the boron atom has at least one aliphatic bidentate di-oxo ligand. The cation may be selected to provide detergent and/or dispersant and/or antioxidant properties to a lubricating composition. 1. An additive for a lubricating composition comprising:an ionic tetrahedral borate compound comprising a cation and a tetrahedral borate anion which comprises a boron atom, the borate anion having at least one bidentate di-oxo ligand formed from reaction of a trivalent boron compound and an aliphatic di-hydroxyl compound, andwherein the borate anion is substantially free of a bidentate aromatic di-oxo ligand.2. The additive of claim 1 , wherein the trivalent boron compound is selected from the group consisting of boric acid claim 1 , borate esters claim 1 , and combinations thereof.3. The additive of claim 1 , wherein the aliphatic di-hydroxyl compound is selected from the group consisting of 1 claim 1 ,2 vicinal diols claim 1 , aliphatic derivatives of hydroxy carboxylic acids claim 1 , aliphatic derivatives of di- and poly carboxylic acids and blends thereof.5. The additive of claim 4 , wherein the hydroxy-carboxylic acid is tartaric acid or citric acid.6. The additive of claim 1 , wherein the aliphatic di-hydroxyl compound is an imide derivative of tartartic acid.7. Polar monomer-containing copolymers derived from at least one α, β unsaturated carbonyl compound, such as alkyl acrylates and one or more olefins, such olefins including ethylene and C 3 -C 20 α-olefins such as propylene and 1-butene, which copolymers have (a) an average ethylene sequence length, ESL, of from about 1.0 to less than about 3.0; (b) an average of at least 5 branches per 100 carbon atoms of the copolymer chains comprising the copolymer; (c) at least about 50% of said branches being methyl and/or ethyl branches; (d) substantially all of said incorporated polar monomer is present at the terminal position of said branches; (e) at least about 30% of said copolymer chains terminated with a vinyl or vinylene group; (f) a number average molecular weight, Mn, of from about 300 to about 15,000 when the copolymer is intended for dispersant or wax crystal modifier uses and up to about 500,000 where intended for viscosity modifier uses; and (g) substantial solubility in hydrocarbon and/or synthetic base oil. The copolymers are produced using late-transition-metal catalyst systems and, as an olefin monomer source other than ethylene preferably inexpensive, highly dilute refinery or steam cracker feed streams that have undergone only limited clean-up steps. Fuel and lubricating oil additives, particularly dispersants, wax crystal modifiers and flow improvers, are produced. Where functionalization and derivatization of these copolymers is required for such additives it is facilitated by the olefinic structures available in the copolymer chains.

The polymer may be made by reacting a dialkylsilicone with a boron compound (e.g. pyroboric acid or boric anhydride) in the presence of a Lewis acid as catalyst and then destroying the catalyst by treatment with ammonia or ammonium carbonate. The metal of the soap may be Al, Be, Cd, Ca, Li, Mg or Zn, and the acid lauric, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic, palmitic or behenic. The composition may be mixed with particles of abrasive grit to form an abrasive composition for honing, abrading or deburring a surface.

The invention is a non-oil containing metalworking lubricant composition, having an engineered particle size of greater than 200 nanometers upon dilution. The expansive particle size results in a substantial increase in lubricity, suitable for the heavy-duty operations previously attainable only with oil-containing products. Additionally, this non-oil containing metalworking lubricant incorporates the best of the positive attributes of oil-containing products into its composition, including excellent corrosion inhibition and heavy-duty operation capable lubricity.
