A lubricating oil composition that is free of organic friction modifiers, comprising (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity in a major proportion; (B) as an additive component in a minor proportion, a separately-prepared oil-soluble zinc salt of a dithiophosphoric acid, the dithiophosphoric acid being the reaction product of phosphorus pentasulphide with one or more alcohols, at least 50 mole % of the alcohol(s) having formula ROH where R is linear C18 to C26 saturated or double-bond unsaturated hydrocarbyl group; and (C) as an additive component in a minor proportion, a separately-prepared oil-soluble zinc salt of a dithiophosphoric acid, the dithiophosphoric acid being the reaction product of a phosphorus pentasulphide with one or more aliphatic alcohols consisting of an alcohol or alcohols each having from three to eight carbon atoms.

The carbon deposits can be removed from the engine piston by simply running the engine with the lubricant for one required cycle, or can be used continuously in the engine to prevent buildup.

The composition is at a temperature of 100° C. to 150° C. There is also another lubricating composition having the ester and a polymeric viscosity modifier. A method for improving wear control, while maintaining or improving deposit control and cleanliness, in an engine or other mechanical component lubricated with a lubricating oil by using as the lubricating oil a formulated oil. The formulated oil has a composition including a lubricating oil base stock as a major component, and specific combinations of low soap detergents, dispersants, and/or mixtures thereof, as a minor component. The low soap detergents include alkaline earth metal salicylates, alkaline earth metal sulfonates, or mixtures thereof, all having the same or different total base number (TBN). The total amount of soap delivered by the low soap detergent is less than 0.60 weight percent of the lubricating oil. The dispersants include borated and/or non-borated polyisobutylene succinimide (PIMA) having a basic nitrogen content of 1% or greater. The lubricating oils are useful in internal combustion engines.
