In one aspect of the invention, pentaerythritol esters and optionally triol esters are added to lubricating oil compositions to provide reduced friction and improved fuel economy. In a second aspect of the invention, similar results are obtained by adding hydrocarbyl aromatics to a lubricating oil composition containing one or more of Groups II and III base stock. In a third aspect, the invention concerns a lubricating oil composition comprising an amorphous olefin copolymer and one or more of Groups II and III base stocks. In one embodiment, the third aspect also includes one or more of hydrocarbyl aromatics and polyol esters as part of the composition. In a forth aspect, moderate concentrations of hydrocarbyl aromatics are used in a lubricating oil composition comprising paraffinic base oil stocks and preferably a borated polyisobutenyl succinimide ashless dispersant.

The block copolymers of the present invention may also be used as a lubricant or fuel additive, as a plastics blend component, in bitumen blends, as a component in hot melt adhesives and as a component of roof sheeting compounds.

Lubricating oil compositions and methods for lubricating gasoline-fueled and/or alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines

A lubricating oil composition is described which is useful in spark-ignited engines which may be fueled with gasoline, alcohol, or mixtures of both. More particularly, lubricating oil compositions for spark-ignited engines are described which comprise (A) an oil of lubricating viscosity; (B) at least one detergent selected from the group consisting of a basic magnesium salt of an organic acid or a mixture of at least one basic magnesium salt of an organic acid and another alkaline earth metal salt of an organic acid wherein the metal in the mixture is predominantly magnesium; and (C) at least one metal salt of (C-1) a substituted succinic acid acylated polyamine; or (C-2) a hydrocarbon-substituted aromatic carboxylic acid containing at least one hydroxyl group attached to an aromatic ring, provided that the metal of said metal salt (C) is not calcium or magnesium. Lubricants primarily useful for lubricating alcohol-fueled, spark-ignited engines also are described which comprise (A) a lubricating oil, (B) a detergent as described above, and (D) at least one carboxylic acid derivative composition useful as a dispersant. The oil compositions of the invention also may contain, and generally do contain other desirable additives such as (E) mixtures of metal salts of dihydrocarbyl phosphorodithioic acids; (F) sulfurized olefins; etc. In one embodiment, the oil compositions of the present invention contain the above additives and other additives described in the specification in amounts sufficient to enable the oil to meet all the performance requirements of the API Service Classification identified as "SG".

SUBSTANCE: polymer additive which enhances viscosity index is a composition of a hydrogenated block copolymer having at least one polymer block B and, optionally, at least one polymer block A. Before hydrogenation, each block A is a monoalkenylarene homopolymer block, and each block B is a copolymer block with regulated distribution, containing at least one conjugated diene and at least one monoalkenylarene. After hydrogenation, approximately 0-10% arene double bonds are restored and at least approximately 90% conjugated diene double bonds are restored; each block A has number-average molecular weight ranging from approximately 3000 to approximately 60000, and each block B has number-average molecular weight ranging from approximately 20000 to approximately 300000. Each block B has terminal parts adjacent to blocks A, which are rich in conjugated diene links, and one or more parts which are not adjacent to blocks A, which are rich in monoalkenylarene links. The total amount of monoalkenylarene in the hydrogenated block copolymer ranges from approximately 20 wt % to approximately 80 wt %. Content of monoalkenylarene in each block B ranges from approximately 10 wt % to approximately 75 wt %, under the condition that when there is no block A, each block B has terminal parts rich in conjugated diene links, and one or more non-terminal links rich in monoalkenylarene links, and further under the condition that if there is more than one block A, each block A has molecular weight not less than 5000. The composition of the hydrogenated block copolymer is used in amount of 0.2-2.0 wt % in oil compositions for high-efficiency engines.
