The lubricating oil composition according to the invention has a low friction coefficient, which is maintained for a prolonged period even after oxidation by nitrogen oxides.

(2) A cylinder lubricating oil composition for a crosshead diesel engine, comprising: a lubricant base oil; (B) a Ca sulfonate detergent having a base number of no less than 10 mgKOH/g and less than 60 mgKOH/g; (C) a Ca phenate detergent having a base number of 55 to 200 mgKOH/g; (D′) an amine antioxidant; and (E′) a zinc dithiophosphate, wherein the composition has a base number of no less than 15 mgKOH/g and less than 120 mgKOH/g.

When the chromium nitride film as a whole is 100 at % (referred simply to as “%”), the chromium nitride film contains 40-65% of Cr and 35-55% of N, and the chromium nitride film has a relative surface area of 15-60% wherein the relative surface area is a surface area ratio of (111) plane to (200) plane obtained when analyzed using X-ray diffraction. A lubricating composition comprising a major amount of base oil and a minor amount of an additive package, wherein the additive package comprises: (A) a friction modifier component selected from: (a) one or more a reaction products of an alcohol with a compound of the formula IV: and (b) one or more compounds of the Formulae II-III: wherein R is a linear or branched, saturated, unsaturated, or partially saturated hydrocarbyl having about 8 to about 22 carbon atoms; R 2 and R 3 are independently selected from hydrogen, C 1 -C 18 hydrocarbyl groups, and C 1 -C 18 hydrocarbyl groups containing one or more heteroatoms; and X is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium cation and n is the valence of cation X; and (B) at least one metal dialkyl dithio phosphate salt.

The lubricant is characterized by having a synergistic additive composition comprising (A) a sulfur-free organo-molybdenum compound, (B) a sulfur-containing organo-molybdenum compound and (C) a triazole derivative prepared by reacting 1,2,4-triazole, a formaldehyde source and an amine; (A), (B) and (C) being present in an amount sufficient to allow the lubricating composition to pass the High Temperature Corrosion Bench Test ASTM D 6594 with respect to Cu and/or Pb corrosion.
