High viscosity cleaner for removing, from heating elements, deposited residues from chemical fibre prodn., comprises (by wt.) 20-50% glycerol or high boiling glycol; 20-40% starch soluble in warm water; 5-15% base and 5-15% heterocyclic cationic cpd. (I). The base is alkanolamine or alkali hydroxide, and (I) is N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). The cleaner, formulated as a paste, is applied as a thin layer to the cold heating element, heated to 120-140deg.C, allowed to act for 15-30 min and rinsed off with water. The base is pref. 5-10%; (I) 5-10%; glycerol or glycol 20-25% and starch (thickener) 20-25%. A method of cleaning a membrane contaminated with a contaminant , the method comprising:bringing a solution into direct contact with the contaminant,wherein the solution comprises a solvent that is compatible with the membrane, andwherein the solution comprises a reducing agent that is soluble in the solvent.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reducing agent is ascorbic acid.3. The method of claim 2 , wherein ascorbic acid is present in the solution in an amount of approximately 2.0 percentage weight to volume.4. The method of claim 2 , wherein ascorbic acid is present in the solution in an amount of between 0.5 and 5.0 percentage weight to volume.5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution pH is between 1.5 and 3.5.6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution further comprises an inorganic acid.7. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution further comprises 0.5 to 2.0 percentage weight to volume of one of sodium bisulfite claim 4 , sodium metabisulfite claim 4 , and sodium hydrosulfite.8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the solution is at ambient temperature.9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the ambient temperature is between one degree Celsius and forty degrees Celsius.10.
