Crimped yarn is produced by temporarily high-twisting e.g false-twisting, heat setting and back twisting and/or intertwisting one or more chemically modified natural cellulose textile e.g. cotton, yarn(s) or roving i.e. yarn &c. of natural cellulose which has been partially esterified and/or etherified e.g. by acetylation, cyanoethylation or benzylation, with retention of the fibre structure of the yarn, so as to increase the thermoplasticity of the yarn. Heating means for setting the yarn may comprise an electric coil which heats the air in a tube through which yarn passes, a box with heating coils through which yarns pass at different points, or a metal contact surface. The crimp may be fully developed by immersion of skeins of yarn in hot water under tension-free conditions.

Selon l'invention, on enlève la séricine de la soie brute; on absorbe la protéine dérivée du collagène dans la soie brute; on tord les fibres de soie à l'humidité ; on maintient les fibres de soie saturées en humidité à une température de 130 à 140 degrés C sous une pression de 3 à 3,5 atm pendant 10 à 20 minutes; on détord les fibres de soie en direction inverse ; et on traite les fibres de soie dans une vapeur saturée pour qu'elles aient un rétrécissement uniforme. La figure montre un fil de soie ouvré irrétrécissable où la fibroïne est fixée lors de la torsion. L'invention s'applique notamment à l'industrie textile.

Yarn containing keratinous fibres is crimped by twisting the yarn, setting the twist by treatment with a reducing agent, and then untwisting at least some of the imposed twist. Keratinous fibres mentioned are various animal wools and they may be blended with non-keratinous fibres, for example cotton, rayon, cellulose acetate and triacetate, vinyl, acrylic, polyamide and polyester fibres, to produce a single or multi-ply yarn to be crimped. The imposed twist may be in the same direction as, or in the opposite direction to, the original twist in the yarn while the back twist may be greater or less than the imposed twist. In an example the yarn is twisted and wound on to a perforated dye spindle which is immersed in an aqueous solution containing 1% sodium bisulphite. After ten minutes excess reducing agent is drained from the yarn and the yarn is then steamed for a further ten minutes. A compound yarn, in which high stretch and bulk properties due to helical crimp may be developed when the yarn is released, is produced by intertwisting at least two " thermoplastic " yarns, the doubling twist being in the same direction as the twist in the component yarns, setting the doubled yarn in the twisted condition, and then reverse twisting the doubled yarn to an extent which exceeds the original doubling twist so as to leave a reverse twist of at least four turns per inch in the compound yarn. The remanent twist is dependent on the count, and increases with the fineness, of the yarn. The component yarns may be staple and continuous filament yarns of acrylics, polyamides or polyesters, or of wool. The doubled yarn may be set and/or relaxed under dry, moist or wet heat conditions.

A synthetic multifilament yarn has filaments of different deniers, with at least one filament having a denier greater than 6 and is crimped by twisting, heat setting and untwisting - for example by false twisting. The yarn, which may be composed of a polyamide, polyester or a polyolefin, may be covered - for example by core-spinning or by wrapping - with staple fibres of wool, cotton, regenerated cellulose, or polyacrylonitrile, and/or plied with a further similar multifilament yarn. In examples the yarn has 2-4 filaments of a denier between 8 and 20 and 12-20 filaments of a denier between 2 and 5. Individual filaments of different cross-sections may be used. Yarns consisting of trilobal filaments or containing at least one hollow filament can be used. The plying and covering steps may be carried out on a ring-twister, or an up-twister with or without a hollow spindle.

1439694 Crimping KANEBO Ltd 19 July 1973 [19 July 1972 4 May 1973] 34537/73 Headings D1F and D1P Crimped cellulosic fibres are made by mechanically distorting a cellulosic yarn to impart crimps thereto, and then treating the yarn with an alkali and a "resin" finishing treatment which imparts wet crease-resistance thereto followed by removal of the constraints which maintained the imparted crimps in the yarn to yield a permanently crimped yarn. The alkali treatment may be before, simultaneously with or after the resin treatment. The yarn can be distorted by weaving, weft or warp knitting, stitch knitting or twisting. The yarn may be deknitted or untwisted after the alkali and resin treatment. The. fibres may be cotton, flax, viscose, mixtures thereof or mixtures with polyester polyamide or celluolse acetate fibres. The alkali treatment may be carried out at a temperature not higher than 50‹C for 20-120 mins using alkali metal hydroxide. The "resin" may be formed from divinyl sebacate, allyl acrylate, diglycidyl ether, epichlorohydrin, ethylene oxide, monomethyl acrylamide, dimethylol acrylamide, monomethyl and dimethylol aminostyrene, glyoxal resins, triazone resins, methylolated alkylene urea resins and carbamate resins. The resin may be applied in aqueous or aqueous/organic solvent solution or dispersion by spraying padding or roller coating. The resin may be formed in situ using acidic catalysts and heating.

In the operation shown, yarn 4 in two or more plies is withdrawn by a roller 3 from a bobbin 2 on a delivery spindle 1 which twists the yarn in the direction of the single yarn twist. Twisted yarn 5 is drawn by rollers 6, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 around fixed rods 8 in baths 7, 10, 12, 14, 16 and a rod 18 so as to be subjected successively to an alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide, a solution of sodium bicarbonate, a dilute acid solution, washing water, an impregnant of thermosetting resin, e.g. melamine formaldehyde, and squeezing off excess resin. Impregnated yarn passes between electric heater plates 19 wherein it is dried, a funnel 20, and is fed by discs 21 into a heated crimping tube 23. Yarn is withdrawn by rollers 24 and straightened by passage through a slit 27 in a felt layer 26, or by rollers or combs (not shown). Finally, untwisting and backtwisting is effected by spindle 28 whereby high stretch yarn 29 is also taken up in a tube 30.

High-stretch twisted cotton yarn is produced in a continuous process by twisting together two or more singles yarns, the folding twist being in the same direction as the singles twist. The twisted yarn is passed through successive baths of alkali, NaHCO3, weak acid, water rinse, and e.g. melamine-formaldehyde resin. After the resin bath, excess resin is squeezed off and after passing over drying heated plates, the yarn passes through a heat-setting zone, the vol. of which pref. permits a 45-minute treatment time. The yarn is then straightened and finally twisted onto a spindle, the twist being in the opposite direction to the initial folding twist, and about 5 to 10% the amount of the latter.

Wool fibres in the form of yarns, fabrics or garments in a desired shape e.g. stretched and/or flattened and/or on a former, beam or bobbin, pleated or folded, are permanently set (40 - 100%) without use of chemical setting and/or swelling agents. The fibres, in such shape and having a moisture content of 10-30% (calculated on the dry weight of the fibres) are maintained in an enclosed space e.g. an autoclave, under steam pressure at a temperature of 101 - 180 DEG C for a minimum period of time, varying inversely with the temperature, of from twenty minutes to two seconds. Partial water vapour pressure is maintained in the space in equilibrium with partial water vapour pressure in the interior of the fibres so that the latter is maintained constant during the heat treatment. The present invention discloses a cotton-like knitted fabric, a polyester filament and a process for preparing the same. The fabric is a weft knitted fabric obtained by weft knitting a weaving material comprising at least 45% by weight or more of polyester filaments. The pore area distribution of the fabric has a confidence of 2[sigma] or more and is centered on 6000-22000 [mu]m2, and the coefficient of variation of pore area is greater than 40%. The polyester filament is formed from alternatingly arranged false-twist direction regions and twist regions in an opposite direction. The false-twist direction regions have an average length of 0.3 cm or less, a coefficient of length variation of 60% or more, a diameter of 30% to 70% relative to that of twist regions in an opposite direction, and a total length of 20.0%-40.0% relative to the total length of the polyester filament. A method for making an elastic core yarn includes covering an elastic core having a fiber of natural rubber with metric count 200-1000 dtex with a cotton-based covering yarn. The elastic core and the covering yarn are conveyed such that the covering yarn laterally attains a proximity of the elastic core in a wrapping space. The covering yarn is helically wrapped about the elastic core. The conveying speed, and therefore the winding/unwinding speed, is selected such that the elastic core is stretched to a stretching ratio of at least two, and the covering yarn becomes twisted with a final twist direction opposite to its initial twist direction, and forms T coils per length unit of the elastic fiber set between a minimum value T0 and a maximum value T1. An elasticized yarn is thereby obtained, and a fabric, in particular a denim type fabric, is manufactured from this yarn.

[Also in Divisions B5 and D1] Surgical sutures are made from a round collagen strand of uniform cross-section throughout its length, made by stretching and simultaneously twisting a multiplicity of extruded wet collagen monofilaments under controlled conditions of humidity to wring out a controlled amount of moisture and to bond the monofilaments into a unitary structure, drying the monofilaments while in the twisted condition, and removing the twist. Monofilaments are defined as single threads of collagen fibrils as extruded through single spinneret orifices. The wet collagen monofilaments may be obtained in the form of a ribbon, i.e. a thin film of collagen fibrils as extruded through a slit, the wet collagen ribbon twisted to wring out excess moisture, dried while in the twisted condition to form a bonded unitary structure of circular cross-section, and the twist removed. In a preferred method, a collagen dispersion is de-aerated, aged for 31 hours at 25‹C. and 16 hours at 5‹C., and spun from the reservoir 114 under a pressure of 15 1bs. The dispersion is pumped through the homogenizing jets 116 and 117 and the filter to the spinneret and is extruded upwardly into the spinning column which contains a continuously circulating acetone dehydrating bath 145, the filaments passing over idler pulley 137 and around guide 138 to the godet 101. The collagen filaments are wrapped three times around godet 101 before passing to the first stretching stage. Three wraps suffice to prevent slippage because the collagen is wet at this point.
