In forming a woven carpet a sheet of plastics material is slit into a plurality of strips which are then woven into the backing of the carpet to form the set of warp threads. The sheet is tensioned after being slit into strips and before being passed to the heald frame of a loom. Tensioning is done by three rollers braked or biased together, the strips being fed over the first roller under the second roller and over the third roller, the second roller being braked and also biased downwardly to tension the strips. The strips are not separated to their required spacing until after they have passed through the tensioning means.

WOVEN FABRIC WITH FLAT FILM WARP YARNS AND APPARATUS FOR FORMING SAME

A textile fabric comprises a plurality of weft yarns extending generally in a weft direction and a plurality of flat film warp yarns extending generally in a warp direction. The warp yarns are interwoven with the weft yarns in a series of identical repeating units of a predetermined weave pattern. The flat film warp yarns, which are preferably between about 10 and 40 µm in thickness and 0.010 and 0.025 inches in width, are preferably interwoven with the weft yarns such that, in each of the identical repeating units, the weft yarns are interwoven as coupled pairs, such that a first yarn of each of the coupled pairs follows the same interweaving pattern relative to each of the flat film warp yarns as a second yarn of that pair. This configuration, known as a "double-pick" configuration, can produce a fabric that has acceptable appearance and feel, but at a considerably lower cost than typical textile fabrics of comparable weight because of the presence of the flat film warp yarns. The flat film warp yarns can be formed on a slitting apparatus having a plurality of parallel, aligned, spaced apart cutting blades.

The invention relates to a weaving method that can be used to produce articles which have a warp made up of yarns directly using a weaving beam (2). The inventive method consists in: producing a warped chain comprising a total number of threads (1) that corresponds to the article to be made, said chain being produced directly on a beam (2) which can be adapted to the weaving loom; and, subsequently, using one such beam (2) to form a fabric in the conventional manner. Said method is characterised in that the sheet of warp (1) is subdivided into two basic sheets (1a, 1b) immediately after said sheet of warp (1) has been taken up from the storage beam (2) and before it is passed around the turning roll (3). The aforementioned basic sheets are subjected individually to a sizing or finishing treatment and are subsequently combined to form a single sheet after drying and before being passed around the turning roll (3).

The colored pattern is in parallel bands along the line where the paper is peeled away, where the colored bands are lined up near the warps which carry the transfer. An Independent claim is included for a woven fabric where the warps are crepe yarns. Preferred Features: The fabric is woven with a number of different weft yarns. The woven fabric has a pattern of parallel bands, where a part of each band has a higher color intensity than the remainder of the band. At least one band is in two colors.

The invention concerns a method for obtaining a woven fabric which consists in: continuously unwinding from a single warp beam, a set of parallel warp yarns; passing said set on a whip-roll; forming a shed using held means, said shed being defined in the forward movement direction of the warp, at the input through an opening stitch of the shed, and on the other side through a face stitch; inserting a weft yarn in the shed in the proximity of the face stitch to form a fabric; and finally uniformly pulling and batching the resulting fabric; method which consists, in the proximity of the shed opening stitch, in heating the warp yarns, and then cooling said warp yarns in the shed before they reach the held means, characterized in that only part (34) of the warp yarns is heated.

Loom warps - roughened during weaving to give soft handle

To increase the warp cover during weaving, the warps are roughened by suitable units. The warps are roughened by the to-and-fro movement of a modified reed using the forwards and/or backwards motion, such as through a brush on the reed which acts on the warps at cycled intervals from the sley beating-in point to the rear dead point of the reed. The roughening movement can be in a combination of directions. The roughening brush is cleaned before or after in the working position. USE/ADVANTAGE - When weaving with warps of spun yarns, the roughening action gives the warps increased bulk and volume. The roughening action converts yarns with a hard character to give a soft woven fabric with slight transparency.

A fabric is made from a warp sheet (10) of multifilament yarn which is coated with a synthetic material by running it from a beam (12) into a bath (21). The filaments are impregnated and coated under pressure after which they are dried before further processing with a weft. Pref. the warp is coated in a conventional sizing machine (13) using pastes or dispersions for non-heat-sealable products or dispersions for heat-sealable products, pref. polyvinyl chloride pastes or aqueous polyvinyl chloride dispersions.
