In forming a woven carpet a sheet of plastics material is slit into a plurality of strips which are then woven into the backing of the carpet to form the set of warp threads. The sheet is tensioned after being slit into strips and before being passed to the heald frame of a loom. Tensioning is done by three rollers braked or biased together, the strips being fed over the first roller under the second roller and over the third roller, the second roller being braked and also biased downwardly to tension the strips. The strips are not separated to their required spacing until after they have passed through the tensioning means.

In one aspect of the invention, the method consists of, in the proximity of the shed opening stitch, heating the warp yarns, and then cooling said warp yarns in the shed before they reach the heald means, characterized in that only part (34) of the warp yarns is heated. In one aspect of the invention, the shed may be defined in the forward movement direction of the warp, for example, by the opening stitch and the face stitch.

A textile fabric comprises a plurality of weft yarns extending generally in a weft direction and a plurality of flat film warp yarns extending generally in a warp direction. The warp yarns are interwoven with the weft yarns in a series of identical repeating units of a predetermined weave pattern. The flat film warp yarns, which are preferably between about 10 and 40 µm in thickness and 0.010 and 0.025 inches in width, are preferably interwoven with the weft yarns such that, in each of the identical repeating units, the weft yarns are interwoven as coupled pairs, such that a first yarn of each of the coupled pairs follows the same interweaving pattern relative to each of the flat film warp yarns as a second yarn of that pair. This configuration, known as a "double-pick" configuration, can produce a fabric that has acceptable appearance and feel, but at a considerably lower cost than typical textile fabrics of comparable weight because of the presence of the flat film warp yarns. The flat film warp yarns can be formed on a slitting apparatus having a plurality of parallel, aligned, spaced apart cutting blades.

The invention relates to a weaving method that can be used to produce articles which have a warp made up of yarns directly using a weaving beam (2). The inventive method consists in: producing a warped chain comprising a total number of threads (1) that corresponds to the article to be made, said chain being produced directly on a beam (2) which can be adapted to the weaving loom; and, subsequently, using one such beam (2) to form a fabric in the conventional manner. Said method is characterised in that the sheet of warp (1) is subdivided into two basic sheets (1a, 1b) immediately after said sheet of warp (1) has been taken up from the storage beam (2) and before it is passed around the turning roll (3). The aforementioned basic sheets are subjected individually to a sizing or finishing treatment and are subsequently combined to form a single sheet after drying and before being passed around the turning roll (3).

During the weaving of a fabric at a loom, the warps (3) are heated at the point where the shed is opened, followed by cooling of the warps in the shed before they reach the healds (7,8). The heating is applied only to a part (34) of the warps in the shed. Downstream of the back rest roller (4), the warps are divided into two levels (33,34) to form the shed. The upper warp level (34) is heated by a plate (20) to a sufficient temperature to give an elongation and reduce the module of elasticity. The temperature of the warps can raised by a heating or scalding stage or by calendering. A transfer paper can be applied to the warps for a colored pattern to be transferred from the paper to the heated warps, and the paper is detached at the same speed as the warp forward movement, leaving the transferred pattern only on the heated warp level (34). The colored pattern is in parallel bands along the line where the paper is peeled away, where the colored bands are lined up near the warps which carry the transfer. An Independent claim is included for a woven fabric where the warps are crepe yarns. Preferred Features: The fabric is woven with a number of different weft yarns. The woven fabric has a pattern of parallel bands, where a part of each band has a higher color intensity than the remainder of the band. At least one band is in two colors.
