The disclosure is that of an invention directed to a horizontal padder and extractor for circular knit fabric tubes and includes a pair of squeeze rolls disposed with their axes in the same horizontal plane, thus defining an upwardly open nip for retaining a puddle of impregnating liquid. A safety guard is pivotally mounted over the squeeze rolls and is operably connected to an electrical interlock to deactivate the machine whenever the safety guard is not in proper position. A steaming station is provided ahead of the padder and extractor and a horizontal orienting spreader feeds the spread fabric tube to the padder at a tangent to the upper surface of the front squeeze roll thereof.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR CALENDERING TUBULAR KNITTED FABRICS

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for finishing tubular knitted fabric involving the steps of laterally distending the fabric to flat, two-layer form by passing it over a spreader frame, and discharging the fabric from the spreader frame into a pair of opposed calendering rolls. Improved arrange-ments are provided for engaging the tubular fabric, across its fully spread width, above and below the spreader, for independently advancing or retarding the respective layers of the fabric in order to bring them into proper alignment. The improved arrangements include a thin, flat contact plate, incorporated into the spreader frame structure, which provides a contact support from the fabric, enabling it to be drivingly engaged by independently driven contact rolls. The structure enables the fabric to be adjusted substantially across its full width, reducing to a practicable minimum areas at the extreme edges of the fabric tube that are not under positive control during the reducing to a practicable minimum areas at the extreme edges of the fabric tube that are not under positive control during the adjustment stage. The appts. is for stretching out tubular fabrics, partic. cotton matl. in a shrink-free process, after it is drawn longitudinally together with heat and moisture for fixing. At least two units are switched in succession on being released by a buffer zone (P) in the direction of the fabric travel. This gives a progressive lateral stretching of the matl. together with a pair of clamping rollers which give the fabric its advance motion. The equipment gives the tubular fabric its reqd. lateral stretching in a single process, to return the rows of stitches to the original structure.

A method for producing a fabric , comprising the steps of:(a) singeing a continuous length of a fabric;(b) after said step (a), desizing the continuous length of fabric;(c) after said step (b), washing the continuous length of fabric;(d) after said step (c), peaching the continuous length of fabric by impacting at least one of the surfaces of the fabric with a plurality of bristles;(e) after said step (d), stentering the continuous length of fabric; and(f) after said step (e), sanforizing the continuous length of fabric;(g) wherein said steps (a) through (f) are performed using only water, water vapor, and enzymes without use of chemicals.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said step (a) is performed by passing the fabric on a singeing machine at a predetermined speed.3. The present apparatus automatically forms the desired length of folded cuff on hosiery articles and the cuffed hosiery articles are automatically removed from the apparatus. The operator is only required to successively position hosiery articles on tubular members (T-1, T-2 and T-3) as they are successively moved in a step-by-step manner by a turret (10) to a loading station, a cuff folding station, and a hosiery stripping station. The operator draws a hosiery article over the tubular member (T-1) at the loading station with the closed toe end of the hosiery article covering the open free end of the tubular member. The tubular member is then moved to the folding station where a plunger (30) moves the closed toe end of the hosiery article inwardly of the tubular member leaving a folded cuff on the outside of the tubular member (T-2). The tubular member is then moved to the stripping station where gripper means (13) removes the hosiery article with the folded cuff from the tubular member (T-3) and releases the same into a convenient collection receptacle.

An integrated automated manufacturing system for finishing individual garments is provided. The system includes a conveyor system, a fixture constructed for movement on the conveyor in a predetermined orientation, a form mounted on the fixture for holding a garment for finishing in a predetermined fixed orientation relative to the fixture, and finishing stations to which the conveyor carries garments mounted on the fixtures. The fixture mounted form can be inflatable so that the garment mounted thereon can be inflated to its fully extended, three-dimensional form, and the finishing station can include a blower to inflate the form prior to the initiation of a finishing step. The finishing stations can include robot-manipulated tools, such as spray guns or abrasive wheels, for applying chemical or mechanical finishes to selected areas of the fixture mounted garment, washing and drying of the garments, automated garment inspection, or the application of tags and labels to the garments. Typical chemical and mechanical finishes include the application of bleaches or abrasives to selected areas of the garment to fade or wear the garment in those areas, or the application of paint or dye to selected areas to shade the garment or to apply a logo or other design to the selected area. A computer integrates the operation of the system by receiving information from the operator about the physical characteristics of the garments mounted on the fixtures and the finishing steps to be performed, by controlling and tracking the movement of the fixtures on the conveyor, and by controlling operations at finishing stations, including the movement and operation of robots and robot-mounted finishing tools to achieve consistent reproduction of desired chemical or mechanical finishes on individual garments.

Abstract Method and apparatus for heat-treating tubular. elastically expandable material A method is indicated for heat-treating tubular, elastically expandable material, especially for drying and/or smoothing stockings, pantyhose, and the like, in which the material is stretched on at least two adjacent limbs of an elongated stretcher and then acted upon by heat for drying and/or smoothing purposes. During heat treatment the limbs are moved so as to rotate about their long axis, with the direction of the rotating movement preferably being alternately reversed. This eliminates the occurrence of streaks, especially in the stretching of stockings, pantyhose, and the like. A suitable apparatus has at least one elongated stretcher with at least two adjacent limbs on which the material can be stretched, and is provided with a heating device for heating the material. The limbs of the elongated stretcher are mounted rotatably about their long axis, and are connected to a drive device, for example by means of a chain drive.

Registering webs.-Apparatus for stretching fabrics, more particularly for use in mercerizing- machines, comprises a number of cylindrical scrolls 9 of the kind having spiral grooves 11 extending from the centre to each end, these scrolls being arranged in an arcuate or circular row with unoccupied spaces between them and being driven to rotate about stationary axes or to revolve about a common axis, or to both rotate and revolve, tension rollers 20 being arranged at both sides of the row to retain fabric passing over the scrolls in tension therewith. Fig. 2 shows a circular row of scrolls 9 mounted in bearings in wheels 7 keyed on a rotating shaft 3 on which are also keyed gears 5 which are arranged outside of the wheels 7 and mesh with pinions 12 on the ends of the scrolls. Both to rotate and to revolve the scrolls, a single gear 5 is employed which is fixed or is rotated at a different speed from that of the wheels 7. Fig. 1 shows three units acting in succession with spring-mounted tension rollers 20 arranged as shown. In a modification, three scrolls 9 are rotatably arranged in arcuate formation in a stationary frame, the pinions 12 being driven by a gear 5 fixed on the shaft 3.

Each air opener includes an air inlet assembly and an air outlet assembly. The invention concerns a method of drying tubular knitted fabric on a continuous basis, which method includes the steps of: (A) overfeeding a rope of wet fabric (4) after untangling to a first transverse stretcher (20); (B) transversely stretching the untangled fabric to from 100% to 150% of a final dry fabric width to thereby bring the number of knitted courses per unit fabric length to substantially that in the final dry fabric; (C) expressing water by nip rollers (10) from the transversely stretched fabric to remove water carried in the interstices of the fabric; (D) overfeeding the expressed fabric to the exterior of a rotating drying drum (32) at from 0% to 25%; (E) revolving the fabric around the drum (32) and reducing the water content to from 10% to 40% of the dry fabric weight while passing heated air from the drum exterior to the interior to thereby produce an unstretched, moist elastic fabric; (F) drawing the fabric from the drum upwardly onto a second transverse stretcher (41) to finally adjust the fabric width and obtain the final fabric width; (G) blowing air at least partly recirculated from the drum interior onto the fabric on the second transverse stretcher (41) to reduce the water content to less than 10% of the dry fabric weight, some of the air being diverted downwards inside the fabric to form a balloon intermediate the drum and the second transverse stretcher at (28).

The process of the parent Specification in which textile articles are placed on forms and enclosed in a chamber under super atmospheric pressure, subjected to spraying with hot treating solution, the latter being collected and recycled, is modified in that the treating solution addititionally contains a chelating agent selected from the group of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid and hydroxyethyl ethylene diamine triacetic acid. The treating solution may also contain a nonionic scouring agent e.g. the condensation product of ethylene oxide with fatty acids derived from a vegetable oil such as olive oil. Specified finishing agents which may additionally be included in the treating solution are melamine-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde. Acid, direct, pre-metallized, disperse and vat dyestuffs are specified as constituents of the treating solution. Additionally the treating solution may contain a lubricant, e.g. a sorbitol ester. In examples textile articles e.g. nylon stockings are dyed with a solution containing (1) a condensation product of ethylene oxide and olive oil, (2) Stoddard solvent, (3) melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, (4) sorbitol ester lubricant, (5) ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid and (6) a dyestuff.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A high production steamer for tubular knitted fabrics or the like which comprises means for distending and conveying the fabric along a predetermined, generally horizontal processing plane and a pair of steam boxes mounted in opposed relation, one above and one below the processing plane. The steam boxes are of a heretofore known dripless construction which includes discharge openings extending across the width of the fabric and arranged to direct steam toward the upper and lower faces of the fabric. A novel steam confining means is provided to confine the dis-charged steam to a limited region closely surrounding the fabric. The confining means comprises a chamber formed by wall-forming members associated with the discharge sides of the steam boxes and the end plates of the opposed steam boxes which are arranged in a contacting relation along the sides of the path of con-veyance for the fabric. The steam confining means will facilitate an effective steam penetration of the fabric in a relatively short time period. Means are also provided to heat the upper regions of the steam confining means to prevent condensation of the dis-charged steam above the processing plane.

The spreader frame, which is positioned internally of the moving fabric tube during processing operations, is capable of in-process width adjustments, without either stopping the processing line or damaging the fabric. Width adjustment of the internal spreader frame may be accomplished from a remote operator station. Moreover the apparatus may incorporate edge-sensing means operative automatically to adjust the width of the spreader to maintain uniformity of width in the process fabric.
