In a preferred embodiment the load bearing member includes at least one web (22, 26) of plastics material having reinforcing arrangements along the edges of the webs, the arrangement being, for example, I, T or cruciform in section (Figures 1, 2 and 5 respectively). Preferably the load bearing member is connectable to like load bearing members. In an alternative embodiment the plastics webs are joined to form a hollow member (Figures 6-8). In a further embodiment the load bearing member is in the form of a tube (Figure 9). The load bearing member of the invention can be used as a pile or shuttering.
