The glove compartment is made in a rigid fitting and is supported under the dashboard on three mountings. One mounting (10) is clipped to the lock mechanism (10) while the other two mountings (11,12) are set at the bottom edge of the box. In a collision the lower mountings are released to allow the box to pivot about the upper, stronger mounting. The underside of the compartment is covered with an impact absorbing foil (16) to protect the knees of the occupants. The rear edge is linked to the dashboard by an impact absorbing bulkhead. The pivot release of the mounting prevents crushing of the compartment so that any firm contents, e.g. cameras, do not cause any injury.
