The latch has a retention feature and a first reference surface that is perpendicular to the planar portion of the lid. There is a latch mechanism coupled to the housing that has an engagement element configured to engage the retention feature of the latch and a first alignment feature having a first alignment surface. In response to receiving a correct biometric identifier and determining that the physiological state of the user does not correspond to the undesired physiological state, some embodiments may be configured to grant access to a storage area of a biometric lockbox. Similarly, in response to at least one of the following: not receiving the correct biometric identifier or determining that the physiological state of the user corresponds to the undesired physiological state of the user, some embodiments may be configured to deny access to the storage area of the biometric lockbox.

The latching mechanism includes an actuator pivotably mounted on the assembly, a biasing device coupled to the actuator, and a dampener coupled to the actuator. The actuator carries an engagement member that is disposed within a detent of a labyrinth when the assembly is closed. The dampener is also coupled to the assembly for retarding movement of the actuator, wherein upon a sudden impact affecting the assembly when closed, the dampener retards movement of the actuator for a predetermined time to enable the engagement member to remain disposed in the detent to keep the assembly closed.

An electromagnetic coil electromagnetically is coupled to the ferrous member, wherein the coil is electrically energized by current to create a polarity on the ferrous bar to create an increased force closure to the door relative to the housing when an expected vehicle crash is detected. The coil generates an opposite polarity on the ferrous member to open the door in response to a user actuated input.
