In a co-rotational scroll apparatus having two interleaving scroll wraps secured to end plates rotating about parallel, non-concentric axes to produce a relative orbital motion, a coupling for causing concurrent rotation and for enhancing the nutational stability of the scroll element. In the preferred embodiment, the nutation reducing means is comprised of an Oldham-type coupling engaging extension members on one of the scroll end plates and drive keys on the other respective end plate. The angular disposition thereof is optimized to cause the Oldham coupling to generate during rotation a moderating moment load in opposition to the tipping moment load of at least one of the scroll elements and thereby enhance the nutational stability of the scroll elements. The moderating moment load of the coupling imposed on the scroll elements may be altered by varying the angular and radial disposition of the center of gravity of the coupling.

A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus comprises a housing having an inlet port and outlet port and is made of non-ferrous metal. The housing has a first casing and second casing that is connected to the first casing. A fixed scroll is fixedly disposed within the housing and has a first circular end plate from which a first spiral element entered into the housing. An orbiting scroll has a pair of parallel first grooves formed on a second circular end plate. A second spiral element extends from the second circular end plate such that the first spiral element interfits the second spiral element at an angular and radial offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define a pair of fluid pockets within the housing. A driving mechanism is connected to the orbiting scroll to effect orbital motion of the orbiting scroll. An Oldham ring is coupled to the orbiting scroll for preventing rotation of the orbiting scroll during orbital motion. The Oldham ring has a pair of first key portions and a pair of second key portions. The second key portions are perpendicular to the pair of first key portions. The first key portions engage the parallel first grooves on the second circular end plate. A supporting plate member is disposed between the housing and the orbiting scroll to support the thrust load of the orbiting scroll. The supporting plate member, which is made of ferrous metal, has a pair of grooves formed on one end surface for engaging the second key portions of the Oldham ring.

A scroll type machine is disclosed which is designed to enable it to be fully assembled prior to being installed in a hermetic shell and incorporates an improved mounting arrangement for the non-orbiting scroll member. This design enables the compressor to be tested without the need to first install it in the outer shell. This feature in combination with the mounting arrangement greatly facilitates manufacturing, assembly, testing, effectively prevents radial displacement of the non-orbiting scroll member, and offers the advantages of axial compliance. In one embodiment, the non-orbiting scroll is axially movably secured to a bearing housing by means of a plurality of bolts or bolts and sleeves. In another embodiment a rigid annular ring serves to axially movably secure the non-orbiting scroll to the bearing housing while in a third embodiment a stamped ring is secured to both the non-orbiting scroll and the bearing housing. In another embodiment a two piece main bearing housing includes an integral ring for radially positioning the non-orbiting scroll member and means for securing anti-rotation and axial stop means thereto. A method of assembling and/or testing the compressor is also disclosed.
