The silencer is made in two symmetrical halves (1a, 1b). Each consists of a cylindrical metal tube open at one end and closed at the other with a central hole through the closed end. The two halves are enamelled. Their shape makes enamelling both inside and outside possible. After enamelling an exhaust an exhaust pipe (3a, 3b) with perforations in its wall is pushed into each silencer half through the hole in the closed end. The space round the pipe is filled with steel used to act as sound absorbing material. The two halves are then pushed into a metal sleeve (2) from opposite ends until their open ends abut in the centre of the sleeve. The sleeve is a tight fit and holds the assembly firmly.

A device (a silencer) for silencing a flow, comprises at least one acoustic chamber through-flowed by gas, e.g., exhaust gas, at least one inlet pipe and at least one pipe or passage interconnecting two chambers or a chamber and an exterior environment or chamber and is designed with such cross-sectional area transitions between passages and the chambers that the sound attenuation achieved by the device is high while the pressure drop across the silencer is low and that high attenuation at low characteristic frequencies of flow systems comprising the device are obtained. One or more diffusers and/or monolithic bodies or catalysts may be comprised in the device. The passages may be curved or helical so as to allow for a low natural frequency. Embodiments with resonance chambers attenuating at selected frequencies are disclosed. A method for operating a vehicle comprising a combustion engine and a silencing system is disclosed.

The engine exhaust gas silencer comprises a Venturi tube (1) with evacuation ports (9) at its throat, the venturi tube being surrounded by two concentric tubes (4) provided with heat and sound absorbing material. In the front of the silencer is an annular cover (1) in which the positioned entry tubes with annular heat screens (3), the tubes (4) being constituted by metal mesh. The inner tube is supported at its rear end by a ring and three radial members which bear on the rear annular cover (8) of the silencer. The exhaust gases enter the silencer through the tubes (2) and pass through the two annular chambers (56) to be drawn into the Venturi tube through the throat ports (9).

Disclosed is a dampener that can eliminate or reduce noise from fluid flow, where the fluid has been accelerated by equipment. A typical kind of equipment that may do such a thing is a pneumatic blower, which takes in ambient air and discharges the air at a higher velocity. The discharged fluid may be passed through the dampener, which includes a noise-absorbing spool structure and a reflective head. Noise that is not absorbed by the noise-absorbing spool structure may be reflected back on the direction of the noise-absorbing spool structure. The combination of noise absorption with noise reflection can result in the dampener efficiently dampening noise with comparatively little adverse effect on fluid flow.
