A two stage positive shift starter drive system for an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A pair of electrical switches are sequentially actuated by an actuator solenoid engaging the starter drive's pinion gear with the engine's ring gear. The first switch actuated after a predetermined displacement of the solenoid's armature applies electrical power to the cranking motor's through a resistance connected in series with the cranking motor and connected in parallel with the solenoid's pull in coil. The resistance reduces the electrical power applied to the cranking motor and the potential across the solenoids pull-in coil thereby reducing the rotational speed and the engagement force applied to the pinion gear. The end of the armature travel closes the second switch applying full power to the cranking motor permitting normal cranking of the engine with the pinion gear fully engaged with the ring gear.

Turning-gear.-An electric motor 3 turns the engine fly-wheel 2 through a spur pinion or worm 6 mounted on a screwed extension 5 of the armature shaft. The worm 6 is normally held in the disengaged position by a spring catch 19 engaging .with a plate 15, which is gripped between collars on the worm. When the motor starts to turn, the inertia of the worm and the friction between the plate and collars prevent rotation of the worm, which then moves endways on the screw into gear with the fly-wheel. When the engine speeds up, the worm is thrown out of engagement by screwing back on the armature-shaft extension. The circuit from the battery to the electric motor is first closed by a push-button 11 and is held closed by a switch 18 carried by the plate 15. The switch 18 is opened when the wheel is disengaged.

To accomplish this, in an engine starting system for rotating a crankshaft by meshing an idle gear (17) driven by a pinion (16) of a starter motor with a ring gear (5) of the crankshaft, the idle gear (17) is provided to be movable with respect to the ring gear (5) in a radial direction (V, W) of the ring gear (5). The idle gear (17) is moved by an actuator from outside the ring gear (5) in the radial direction (V), so that the idle gear (17) meshes with the ring gear (5). Tooth collision occurs at a lower probability than in a conventional case wherein the pinion is moved in the axial direction and is meshed with the ring gear. The impact of collision decreases, so that collision noise decreases. Complicated electrical control of the starter motor (11) is not needed.

An engine start system which may be employed in automotive idle stop systems. To start an engine, the system brings a pinion gear into engagement with a ring gear coupled to the engine and turns on an electric motor to rotate the ring gear through the pinion gear to crank the engine. A free wheel is connected to a non-rotating part of the engine arrangement in the mounted position, and the third junction element is configured to be coupled to the free wheel in a first operating phase of the drive system. The third junction element is further configured to be coupled to the engine crankshaft in a second operating phase. 1.
