A liquid flow system such as a domestic central heating system (10, figure 1) has a dosing device 18 to introduce chemical additive into pipework 14 of the system. The dosing device has an inlet port 25 fluidly communicating with the pipework and a chemical additive container (30, figure 4) secured to the port, ideally via an adaptor (32, figure 6) of the container. The container has a radio frequency identification (RFID) device (50, figure 6) that stores data relating to correct operation of the system. The RFID device may be secured to the adaptor. A communication device, ideally provided integrally within the dosing device, receives data from the container and the system is responsive to the received data. The communication device may transmit data to the RFID device of the container such as the volume of additive supplied from or remaining in the container. The communication device may also prevent use of the container in the same or another system by recording on the RFID device that the container is empty or non-reusable. An adaptor, a container of pressurised chemical additive, and a series of containers of additive are also claimed.

The pressure management device has an inlet (12) for connection to a mains water supply; an outlet (14) for connection to a heating system; and a fluid flow path between the inlet and the outlet. A one-way valve (16) is disposed in the fluid flow path and arranged to permit flow in the direction from the inlet toward the outlet and to resist flow in the opposite direction. A pressure reducing valve (18) is also disposed in the fluid flow path and is configured to respond to an outlet pressure of the pressure management device, being normally maintained in a closed state by the outlet pressure but adapted to open when the outlet pressure falls below a threshold. In this way the pressure reducing valve causes the heating system to be topped up when necessary. Additionally a flood prevention device (20) is disposed in the fluid flow path and is configured to close in response to excessive flow through the pressure management device, so that any risk that the pressure reducing valve might permit uncontrolled release of water in the event of a leakage in the heating system is obviated.

When the liquid in the water heating system expands, the diaphragm will be flexed inwardly causing the valve to be biased to a closed position to prevent water from entering through the inlet. An apparatus for controlling the pressure of a heating fluid within a central heating system (10, fig.1) or for controlling the flow of heating fluid into a central heating system. The apparatus comprises an inlet 46, for connection to a supply of heating fluid 42, and an outlet 64, for connection to a heating system. A pressure sensor 70 is arranged to sense the heating fluid pressure within the central heating system. A flow sensor 80 is arranged to sense the volume of heating fluid flowing between the inlet and the outlet. A flow control valve 66 controls the flow of heating fluid from the inlet to the outlet. The flow control valve is operatively connected to the pressure sensor and is arranged to open when the sensed pressure falls below a first predetermined pressure and close when the sensed pressure rises above a second predetermined pressure. Alternatively, the flow control valve is operatively connected to the flow sensor and is arranged to close once a predetermined volume of heating fluid has flowed. A self-bleeding radiator valve (82, fig.4) comprising a filter (100, fig.4) arranged to inhibit particulate matter from interfering with the operation of the valve is disclosed. A filtration device (106, fig.5) for a central heating system, preferably comprising a magnetic particle filter, is also disclosed.
