A solar heating panel has a rectangular frame to receive a rectangular metal pan which supports a continuous coil of water tubing which is attached thereto by strips of metal attached to the pan. Preferably, the frame is divided into quadrants by rails. Each quadrant is closed off by a pane of glass cushioned and weather-stripped to the frame and rails. Above the glass is a continuous sheet of a synthetic, highly transparent plastic which is attached to the frame by a gasket. Provision is made for thermal expansion of the various components, for drainage, for prevention of leakage of moisture and for insulation. The panel can be incorporated in a household water heating system and also to heat space. The metal pan has a roughened surface (e.g., pebbled, diamond-embossed) and is painted black. This structure increases the area exposed to the sun, eliminates reflection, interrupts flow of cooling air across the surface of the pan, and reduces the effect of expansion and contraction.

A vertical stroke (09) to press down the cover plate builds up a restoring force, and upper and lower detent elements are fixedly engaged with one another, so that wind loads cannot lift the cover plate (04). Removal is performed without destruction by reversible execution of the installation steps and pushing up of the cover plate (04) by the restoring force, so that a cover plate (04) in the middle of a solar installation can also be removed easily. A solar heating panel provides for improved heat transfer between an absorber plate, which receives solar radiation, and tubes, which carry water to be heated, by clamping the tubes into channels formed in the absorber plate. The clamping is effected through upper bar members acting on the top of the absorber plate, and thermally insulating material supporting the tubes and itself supported by lower bar members below the absorber plate. The lower bar members do not contact either the tubes or the absorber plate. Advantageously, the upper bar members which contact the absorber plate, the absorber plate itself, and the metal frame members to which the upper bar members are secured are all made of corrosion resistant aluminium alloy. The tubes used for carrying the water to be heated may also be made of a similar alloy.

The aim is to add a device to vacuum-tube solar collectors so as to prevent overheating thereof. FIG. 1 shows an illustration summarizing the invention applied, in this case, to a vacuum-tube collector of the type consisting of a single glass tube ( 1 ) with heat pipe ( 2 ) centred inside the glass tube ( 1 ) and making contact with heat-absorbing fins ( 6 ). The invention is characterized in that the part of the inner wall of the glass tube ( 1 ) which is hidden from the sun incorporates a curved reflector ( 3 ) with a small thickness along the entire length of the glass tube ( 1 ), which reflector is secured by means of various rings ( 4 ) and is able to rotate while being operated by means of a nitinol or bi-metal torsion spring ( 5 ) which is screwed in and makes good thermal contact with the evaporator tube of the heat pipe ( 2 ) so that, when the temperature of the evaporator tube of the heat pipe ( 2 ) increases beyond a certain value, it causes the nitinol spring to change form, rotate and cause rotation of the reflector ( 3 ), protecting the heat-absorbing fins ( 6 ) from the solar radiation and preventing overheating of the collector and the solar installation. Rotation is reversed when the temperature of the evaporator tube ( 2 ) drops, the collector remaining in the normal heat supply condition. This invention is applicable, with certain modifications, to any type of vacuum-tube solar collector according to the accompanying description. Thus not only is overheating prevented in solar installations, but also the collectors are made more efficient due to the reflection of the radiation heat losses of the fins back towards themselves by means of the reflector.

The tubes 15 contain vaporizable liquid 35, e.g. toluene, methanol or n-butyl alcohol, which boils when heated by solar energy, the resulting vapour condensing on the duct 40 in the jacket 41 and returning to the tubes 15. The enclosure 11 comprises a transparent front 20 and a back having a reflective inside surface, the front and back being separated by spacers 25 passing through holes 27 in the plate 10. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, to prevent overheating, a further Perkins tube arrangement 51, 52 is provided in thermal contact with the jacket 41 and with a radiator panel 50.

A weather-proof transparent plastic sheet has at least one stiffening channel which contains a further stiffening component bonded to the sheet. Construction provides good stiffness for thin sheets, e.g. thin polycarbonate can thus be used for roof lights with maximum light transmittivity. The sheet has parallel stiffeners at intervals of 15 cm. these are slit stainless steel tube sections which reflect heat. The sheet itself is e.g. "Makrolon" (RTM) 1 mm thick and is shaped into channels on top which contain the metal stiffeners. The channels are almost circular so that their edges almost meet. From those edges the sheet curves gently upwards. The stiffeners are compressed for insertion into the channels which they fit tightly, they also curve longitudinally upwards the centre of the sheet The ends of the profiles are pressed flat and are welded on to a flexible steel band first, before they are welded to the frame. The section is suitable for use as transparent roofing sheet with the stiffeners running downwards.

The solar panel itself is highly efficient in operation and comprises a solar plate which incorporates a number of tubes containing the heat transfer liquid, these elements being located within an evacuated enclosure. Vapor from the boiling liquid passes up these tubes into a jacket surrounding a pipe through which the water to be heated is passed; liquid condensing within the jacket passes back to the tubes in the solar plate under gravity. The system incorporating the tubes and the jacket is maintained at a low gas pressure so that boiling of the heat transfer liquid takes place whenever there is a temperature difference between the panel and the heat exchanger.

Durch Ausführen des Vertikalhubes (09) werden oberes und unteres Rastelement fest miteinander in Eingriff gebracht, so dass keine Windlasten die Abdeckplatte (04) abheben können. A light-transmissive solar insulating block assembly comprising: light-transmissive insulating block means defining at least one internal cavity for insulating the interior of a structure to be heated; a housing having a light-transmissive cover providing an exterior surface and a plurality of support walls extending between and separating said cover and said block means, said housing cooperating with said block means to define a circulation chamber therebetween, said support walls defining a plurality of passageways for ingress and egress of air into and out of said chamber; and control means operatively pivotally connected to said housing for reflecting radiant heat back into the interior of the structure being heated controlling the amount of light passing through said chamber, and structures constructed from an array of said block assemblies.

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf einen plattenförmigen Sonnenkollektor, bei dem das den Strahlenabsorber (3) enthaltende Gehäuse durch zwei Glasplatten (1 und 2) und einem metallischen Distanzrahmen gebildet wird, der mit den Glasplatten am Rand gasdicht verbunden ist, so daß das Gehäuse evakuiert werden kann. Der Distanzrahmen besteht dabei aus einem relativ verwindungssteifen Metallprofil (7) und aus auf dem Metallprofil angeordneten Nachgiebigen Stegen (8 und 9) aus einem leicht verformbaren Metall. Diese nachgiegigen Stege sind mit dem Metallprofil einerseits und mit den zu diesem Zweck im Randbereich metallisierten Glasplatten andererseits verlötet. Als Metallprofil können vorzugsweise an den Ecken miteinander vakuumdicht verschweißte Vierkantrohrabschnitte verwendet werden, während für die Stege zweckmäßig ein Bleiband verwendet ist. In Abhängigkeit von der Größe der Sonnenkollektoren kann es zweckmäßig sein, im Gehäuseinnern Abstandshalter zwischen den beiden Glasplatten vorzusehen, die bei Evakuierung des Gehäuses den Außendruck aufnehmen.
