A radar system has different modes of operation. In one mode the radar operates as a single-input, multiple-output (SIMO) radar system utilizing one transmitted signal from one antenna at a time. Codes with known excellent autocorrelation properties are utilized in this mode. At each receiver the response after correlating with various possible transmitted signals is measured in order to estimate the interference that each transmitter will represent at each receiver. The estimated effect of the interference from one transmitter on a receiver that correlates with a different code is used to mitigate the interference. In another mode, the radar operates as a MIMO radar system utilizing all the antennas at a time. Interference cancellation of the non-ideal cross correlation sidelobes when transmitting in the MIMO mode are employed to remove ghost targets due to unwanted sidelobes.

To reduce the interference, the user equipment may perform interference suppression, shaping, or both based on choosing radar waveform patterns that are varied across chirps. In one aspect, the user equipment (e.g., a vehicle) may identify waveform patterns selected by nearby vehicles based on side channel or centralized signaling and may suppress or shape interference by selecting waveform parameters based on this information. Each of the plurality of wave frames may respectively include a plurality of chirps. A wireless transmitter associated with the apparatus may transmit the plurality of wave frames. A wireless receiver associated with the apparatus may receive one or more reflected waves comprising at least a portion of one or more of the wave frames reflected by an object. The processor may determine a distance between the object and the apparatus, a speed of the objet, or both, based on an analysis of the one or more reflected waves.

In some systems, devices may implement techniques to support coexistence for multiple radar sources using a phase-coded frequency modulated continuous wave waveform. A user equipment (e.g., a vehicle) may select a codeword (e.g., a pattern of parameters) from a codebook and may derive phase code information and waveform shape parameters from values specified in the codeword. The user equipment may apply phase modulation to at least one chirp of a waveform using the indicated phase code. In some cases, the phase-coded frequency modulated continuous wave waveform may resemble nested Zadoff-Chu sequences, where the waveform resembles a Zadoff-Chu sequence and the phase code resembles another Zadoff-Chu sequence. The phase code may support mitigating interference between radar waveforms that use the same slope and frequency offset parameters for chirps overlapping in time.

Techniques and systems are described for Spatial-Block Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) for MIMO waveforms. A radar system includes multiple transmitters, receivers, and phase shifters. Electromagnetic (EM) signals are transmitted and received in a Spatial-Block CDM scheme. Each spatial block has multiple slots outnumbering the channels. In addition, each slot corresponds to a specific code of phase shifts applied across the channels by the phase shifters during that slot. Fast-Fourier Transformations are applied to reflections of the EM signals to generate complex observations at each of the channels during each slot. Based on the observations, whether a Doppler phase shift exists between two slots can be determined based in part on whether the phase shift has one or multiple possible values. The techniques allow velocities to be resolved, despite a mixed-Doppler interval detected. Analog beamforming is supported; slots can be directed at particular angles to change gain in a field of view.

Non-transitory computer-readable mediums and systems are provided in which a portion of each chirp of a series of chirps is held at an offset frequency for a period of time, and in which the offset frequency, the period of time or both is varied or dithered across the chirps of the series of chirps. The portion of a chirp that is held at an offset frequency for a period of time may be a non-active portion of the chirp, during which the chirp is not sampled. In some implementations, the portion of a chirp that is held at an offset frequency for a period of time is during a falling portion of the chirp, which may be at the beginning of the falling portion, or at the end of the falling portion immediately before a rise portion of a succeeding chirp.

A method for operating a radar sensing system includes configuring a transmitter to transmit a radio signal. A receiver is configured to receive radio signals. The received radio signals include the transmitted radio signal transmitted by the transmitter and reflected from objects in the environment. The method includes with advanced temporal knowledge of the codes used to modulate the transmitted radio signal, using code values of the plurality of codes, and in combination with a bank of digital finite impulse response (FIR) filters, generating complementary signals of any self-interference noise. The method further includes subtracting the complementary signals at one or more points in the receiver prior to the interference desensing the receiver. The radar sensing system further includes a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) interference canceller for detecting the largest interference signals and sequentially cancelling them while signal processing the received radio signals.
