A liquid crystal apparatus includes a plurality of volumes of liquid crystal material in a containment medium such as an epoxy or polymer. The volumes of liquid crystal material can be interconnected. The walls defining the volumes tend to distort the natural liquid crystal structure in the absence of an electric field, and the optical and electrical properties of the material are such that in the absence of a field incident light is scattered or absorbed and in the presence of a field, scattering and/or absorption are reduced. Pleochroic dye in the liquid crystal material increases absorption of incident light. The apparatus may be used in an optical display, optical shutter, billboard, etc., and it functions independently of polarization. Methods of making and using the apparatus also are included in the invention, including a method of applying an electrode using optically reflective particulate material with a binder medium.

ABSTRACT Encapsulated liquid crystal material in a support medium illuminated from the viewing side or direction or through a louvered light guide from the back side will appear bright or white relative to background when in distorted alignment, e.g. in the absence of an electric field. Incident light impinging on the liquid crystal material is isotropically scattered into the support medium, and using the principle of total internal reflection and possibly also optical interference a relatively large part of the isotropically scattered light is directed back to illuminate the distorted liquid crystal material tending to brighten the same so that light it scatters back to the viewing direction out of the support medium causes the liquid crystal material to appear relatively light or bright as compared to the background where there is no liquid crystal material or where the liquid crystal material is in parallel alignment in field-on condition, i.e. aligned with respect to an electric field, and, thus, substantially transmissive. Original incident light where there is no liquid crystal material, that light which is isotropically scattered toward the back or non-viewing side of the display and within a certain cone or solid angle, and that light passing through aligned (field-on) liquid crystal material will tend not to be totally internally reflected; such light will pass through the support medium and may be absorbed by a remote black or colored material.

Liquid crystal photonic devices and microcavities filled with liquid crystal materials are becoming increasingly popular. These devices often present a challenge when it comes to creating a robust alignment layer in pre-assembled cells. Previous research on photo-definable alignment layers has shown that they have limited stability, particularly against subsequent light exposure. A method of infusing a dye into a microcavity to produce an effective photo-definable alignment layer is described, along with a method of utilizing a pre-polymer infused into the microcavity mixed with the liquid crystal to provide photostability. In this method, the polymer layer, formed under optical irradiation of liquid crystal cells, is effectively localized to a thin region near the substrate surface and thus provides a significant improvement in the photostability of the liquid crystal alignment. This versatile alignment layer method, which can be used in microcavities to displays, offers significant promise for new photonics applications.

The disclosure generally relates to image displays. Specifically, the application relates to an overlay that, among others, enhances the brightness in image displays with color filters. Much of the incoming light to a reflective image display having a color filter layer is absorbed by the color filter layer and is therefore lost. An overlay embodiment is disclosed herein that disperses and concentrates portions of the incoming light onto specific portions of the display. The amount of light absorbed by the color filter layer may be drastically reduced and instead transmitted through the color filter where the light may be reflected or absorbed by a light modulating layer. The disclosed embodiments increase the efficiency and reflectance of the display.

A manufacturing method for the same is also disclosed. Liquid crystal photonic devices and microcavities filled with liquid crystal materials are becoming increasingly popular. These devices often present a challenge when it comes to creating a robust alignment layer in pre-assembled cells. Previous research on photo-definable alignment layers has shown that they have limited stability, particularly against subsequent light exposure. A method of infusing a dye into a microcavity to produce an effective photo-definable alignment layer is described, along with a method of utilizing a pre-polymer infused into the microcavity mixed with the liquid crystal to provide photostability. In this method, the polymer layer, formed under optical irradiation of liquid crystal cells, is effectively localized to a thin region near the substrate surface and thus provides a significant improvement in the photostability of the liquid crystal alignment. This versatile alignment layer method, which can be used in microcavities to displays, offers significant promise for new photonics applications. 1. A method of aligning liquid crystal material to an inner surface of a microcavity , the method comprising:infusing anisotropic dye into the microcavity so as to coat the interior surface of the microcavity with the anisotropic dye;illuminating the anisotropic dye with polarized light so as to form an anisotropic dye layer aligned with respect to the inner surface of the microcavity;infusing reactive mesogen and liquid crystal material into the microcavity; andilluminating the reactive mesogen at a wavelength selected to cause polymerization of the layer of reactive mesogen material so as to form a polymerized reactive mesogen layer aligning the liquid crystal material with respect to the anisotropic dye layer.2. 本发明涉及显示技术领域,公开了一种调光玻璃窗及交通工具,该调光玻璃窗包括玻璃单元,包括相对设置的内玻璃组件和外玻璃组件,内玻璃组件与外玻璃组件之间形成有容纳空间;设置于内玻璃组件与外玻璃组件之间的触控功能层和调光功能层,触控功能层位于调光功能层的内侧;位于容纳空间中、与触控功能层及调光功能层连接的控制单元;设置于玻璃单元外部的调光控制器,调光控制器通过导线与控制单元连接,以与控制单元、触控功能层及调光功能层配合实现调光玻璃窗的透光率调节。该交通工具设置有上述调光玻璃窗。该调光玻璃窗及交通工具改善了现有的调光车窗功能层与控制模块连接的FPC在车窗安装及后续检修过程中非常容易被外界破坏的问题。

An electric response infrared reflection device and a preparation method thereof. The device comprises three light-transmitting conductive substrates which are oppositely arranged. Two adjacent light-transmitting conductive substrates of the three light-transmitting conductive substrates are respectively packaged to form a first adjusting area and a second adjusting area. Both the first adjusting area and the second adjusting area are filled with liquid crystal layers. Each of the liquid crystal layers comprises a mixed liquid crystal material. The mixed liquid crystal material comprises a chiral nematic phase liquid crystal, a monomer, a photoinitiator, and a chiral dopant. The spiral direction of the chiral nematic phase liquid crystal in the first adjusting area is opposite to the spiral direction of the chiral nematic phase liquid crystal in the second adjusting area, so that the total reflection of an infrared band can be implemented.

A liquid crystal apparatus includes a plurality of volumes of liquid crystal material in a containment medium. At least some of the volumes are interconnected. The walls defining the volumes tend to distort the natural liquid crystal structure in the absence of an electric field, and the optical and electrical properties of the materials are such that in the absence of a field incident light is scattered or absorbed and in the presence of a field, scattering and/or absorption are reduced. The apparatus may be used in an optical display, optical shutter, billboard, etc., and it functions independently of polarization. Methods of making and using the apparatus also are included in the invention.
