An optical switch is disclosed. The optical switch includes an optical signal transmitting electro-optic crystal having at least one first portion and at least one second portion. At least one of these portions is formed from a material which exhibits a change in index refraction upon the application of an electric field and the first and second portions define a switching interface therebetween. A signal source is provided for emitting a signal along an unguided beam path through the crystal, the unguided beam path intersecting the switching interface at an incident angle. An electric field generator is provided for generating an electrical field in at least one of the first and second portions of the crystal with the electrical field causing a change in an index of refraction for at least one of the first and second portions sufficient to create a critical angle at the interface smaller than the incident angle to reflect the signal off the interface. Thus, by switching the electric field generator off and on, the interface switches between being transparent and reflective to the optical signal to alter the unguided beam path through the crystal. A method of switching using such an electro-optic crystal is also disclosed.

Total internal reflection (TIR) is a well-known phenomenon/property of interaction between light wave and the interface formed by two types of optical materials. This feature has found many applications in optical engineering. As the reflective index of one material is changed through a controlled approach, the TIR condition may not be maintained and the light propagation path will be changed from a TIR manner to a transmission manner, or vice verse. This allows an optical switch to be built. There are a number of different ways to alert the reflective index of the materials under consideration. In this invention, a unique combination of process and method for electro-optic material manipulation and control is used to generate a structure for alerting the reflective index of one material, which forms an interface, or multiple interfaces to function as controllable TIR interfaces. This leads to a novel solution of TIR based optical switch design. Such a switch can operate over a wide range of spectrum. A properly designed optical switch based on this invention also operates independently from wavelengths and polarization of the incident light.

An optical switching device (46; 94; 98) and a method of providing temperature control for the device utilize compensating thermal energy to maintain a consistent operating temperature. The optical switching device may be a thermally activated optical switch that routes optical signals using bubbles that are strategically created along optical paths (58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70 and 72) within the device. The bubbles are created by thermal energy generated by switching heating elements (84). The compensating thermal energy may be generated by at least one compensating heating element (86A, 86B, 86C and 86D; 100) or by at least one switching heating element that is not currently being used for optical switching, i.e., bubble creation. The compensating thermal energy is varied so that total thermal energy generated by the device is constant, which results in a consistent operating temperature. In a first embodiment, the device includes additional heating elements (86A, 86B, 86C and 86D) that are selectively activated to generate the compensating thermal energy. In a second embodiment, the compensating thermal energy is generated by all of the switching heating elements along one or more optical paths that are in a transmission mode. In a third embodiment, the device includes a single additional heating element (100) that is supplied with a variable electrical power to generate the compensating thermal energy.

Si-Ge quantum wells where the well material has a lowest conduction band energy minimum at k=0 (the Gamma point of the first Brillouin zone) are provided. Quantum well structures that satisfy this condition have "Kane-like" bands at and near k=0 which can provide physical effects useful for various device applications, especially optical modulators. In the Si1-xGex material system, this condition on the band structure is satisfied for x greater than about 0.7. The quantum well barrier composition may or may not have Kane-like bands. A preferred method of providing such quantum well structures on a substrate (e.g., a silicon substrate) is to grow a first Ge-rich Si-Ge buffer layer on the substrate, and then anneal the resulting layered structure. In many cases it is further preferred to grow a second Ge-rich Si-Ge buffer layer on top of the first buffer layer and anneal the resulting layered structure.

Limiting the angular distribution by recycling light, using the beam shaping element for recycling light via reflection, reduces glare when the illumination system is used in general lighting applications. The diffuser avoids that the recycled light is confined between the beam shaping element and the light emitting surface of the light emitting element. Displaying is conducted by using light emitted by the fluorophore layer while no voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer, and black displaying is conducted while a voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer.

One or more surface acoustic wave (SAW) optical modulator devices are included within each light field generator device. Certain embodiments of the disclosure relate to an enhanced brightness total internal reflection-based image display utilizing a front sheet having an array of modified hemispherical protrusions with a partially light reflective surface. Modifying the structure of the convex protrusions of the transparent front sheet and adding a light reflective layer on specific areas of the protrusions may increase brightness in the white state. Controlling the size, depth and angle of the structure of the convex protrusions may direct incident light by one or more of total internal reflection and specular reflection in a controllable manner to enhance brightness of the display.
