This improved method of contact printing employs a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) recording medium as the duplication blank and/or the master hologram material. The optical qualities of the PDLC material described herein provide an improved method of duplication using single beam contact printing regardless of the material comprising the master hologram. Thus, master holograms originally recorded using highly complex optical geometries (e.g., computer generated holograms) are capable of duplication without the need for multiple beam power/intensity balancing and long recording times. The improved hologram contact printing method described herein works with virtually any type of master hologram, including both reflection and transmission holograms.

There is provided a wearable display comprising a light source emitting light of a first wavelength; a first SBG device having a front side and a rear side; first and second transparent plates sandwiching said SBG device; independently switchable transparent electrode elements applied to the opposing surfaces of said transparent plates, a means for spatio-temporally modulating light from the light source to provide image light and a means for coupling the image light into the light guide formed by the two transparent plates and the SBG device. The SBG device comprises a multiplicity of selectively switchable grating regions. The SBG device diffracts image into the pupil of an eye.

This invention is predicated upon a particular set of components which may be grouped according to a number of permutations each of which has a specific application. <??>A hologram viewing apparatus, an integral direct viewing hologram device and an article useful in the manufacture of hologram devices are provided by this invention. <??>The hologram viewing apparatus comprises a housing (20) enclosing a light source (21) which illuminates a screen located in or on a wall of the housing (20), the screen consisting of at least a plane grating (28). <??>The integral direct viewing hologram device comprises a venetian blind film (10) having a hologram (11) embossed on or bonded onto one surface and a plane grating (28) embossed or bonded onto the other surface. The device can be direct viewed in white light and a multi-coloured image can be produced by the provision of a plurality of holograms (11, 12) which are made using different coloured light. <??>The article useful in the manufacture of hologram devices comprises a venetian blind film embossed on one side with a plane grating.

The holographic element may include a first set of holograms and the coupler may include a second set of holograms. The second set of holograms may be characterized by a second set of selectivity curves having second primary lobes that overlap the first primary lobes. This may configure the holographic element to narrow the second selectivity curves by diffracting some of the light out of the optical path, thereby optimizing the resolution of images in the light provided to the eye box.
