Single-shot photometric stereo techniques are disclosed in which chromaticity is assumed to be a variable. Scene illumination includes three or more spectrally distinct light sources. A scene image is taken with a camera system configured to measure five or more different bands, or channels, of the visible light spectrum. The light sources can include narrow-band colored LED lights, possibly combined with color filters to refine the spectral distributions. In each configuration, a beam splitter assembly is used to align two or more color cameras having different color filters placed over their lenses. By use of such techniques, a single multispectral photograph of a subject provides enough information to recover both the full-color reflectance and the surface normals on a per-pixel basis.

A detected coordinate transformation portion restores the obtained position of an object into the original position by inverse rotation, and outputs a thus obtained result as a detection result. Detection accuracy in object recognition is improved, and the quality of data in databases is reduced. Rotated object images required for database creation are used for creation of databases for object recognition for the fish-eye image. Thus, a distorted fish-eye image for object recognition is directly used without projective conversion or image conversion based on corrective operation to the fish-eye image.

Further, by repeating the above work, the threshold is automatically calculated, and an inspection result map with the threshold is displayed, so that a re-inspection is unnecessary.

What is disclosed is a system and method for post-processing a multi-spectral image which has already been processed for pixel classification. A binary image is received which contains pixels that have been classified using a pixel classification method. Each pixel in the image has an associated intensity value and has a pixel value of 1 or 0 depending on whether the pixel has been classified as a material of interest or not. The image is divided into a plurality of blocks of pixels. On a block by block basis, pixel values in a block are changed according to a threshold-based filtering criteria such that pixels in the same block all have the same binary value. Once all the blocks have been processed, contiguous pixels having the same binary value are grouped to form separate objects. In such a manner, pixel classification errors in the post-processed binary image can be reduced.

A system and method for capturing an image for biometric identification. To obtain the image, a person stands or moves in a target zone. A flash element provides an incoherent flash of light through an aperture. The flash is filtered to produce filtered light. The filtered light has primary wavelengths no longer than that of blue light. The filtered light is not perceived well by the human eye due to its short duration, color and small point of origin. The intensity of the filtered light at the target area surpasses the intensity of all ambient light. In this manner, a person in the target area will always be properly illuminated, even if that person were backlit by full sunlight. An image of the person is taken with a camera. The image is analyzed to obtain any biometric patterns that can be used for identification.

Monitoring stress symptoms in plants is crucial to maximize crop productivity. Nondestructive imaging of physiological changes in plants has been intensively used as invaluable tools in the agricultural industry. However, this approach requires a bulky and expensive optical instrument for capturing full spectral information and often has intrinsic limitations for quantitative analyses. Disclosed herein are a method and system for spectrometerless hyperspectral imaging that can map out detailed spatial distribution of chlorophyll content, which is a key trait for physiological condition of plants. The combination of a handheld-type imaging system and a hyperspectral reconstruction algorithm offers the simplicity for instrumentation and operation avoiding the use of an imaging spectrograph. This imaging platform can be integrated into a compact, inexpensive, and portable imager for plant biologists and ecophysiologists.

A methodology for detecting image anomalies in a target area for classifying objects therein, in which at least two images of the target area are obtained from a sensor representing different polarization components. The methodology can be used to classify and/or discriminate manmade objects from natural objects in a target area, for example. A data cube is constructed from the at least two images with the at least two images being aligned, such as on a pixel-wise basis. A processor computes the global covariance of the data cube and thereafter locates a test window over a portion of the data cube. The local covariance of the contents of the test window is computed and objects are classified within the test window when an image anomaly is detected in the test window. For example, an image anomaly may be determined when a matrix determinant ratio of the local covariance and the global covariance exceeds a probability ratio threshold. The window can then be moved, e.g., by one or more pixels to form a new test window in the target area, and the above steps repeated until all of the pixels in the data cube have been included in at least one test window.

The light-source directs circumferential-light toward an authentication-region on the object. The circumferential-light is at least one of collimated and telecentric. The circumferential-light impinges on the authentication-region from a plurality of different azimuthal directions and at a predetermined oblique angle relative to the normal of a plane defined by said object. A portion of the circumferential-light is reflected from the authentication-region toward a specular reflection region and another portion is scattered from the authentication-region. The imager is focused on the authentication-region and acquires a reference-image. The reference-image is a focused image of the scattered light. The reference-image includes image features related to surface features scattering phenomena of the authentication-region.
