Aspects of the technology described herein provide an activatable postage. As an initial step, the activatable postage is printed on a media, such as an envelope or sticker. Initially, the activatable postage has no postage value and will not have any value until activated. Each instance of activatable postage comprises a unique identifier encoded in a machine-readable format. Postage value is added to the activatable postage through an activation process. In order to activate an individual instance of activatable postage, the unique identifier encoded in the activatable postage needs to be provided to the activation application. At the end of the activation process, a central database is updated to associate the unique identifier with a postal value calculated during activation. When the Postal Service receives an item with activatable postage it validates the activatable postage and then deactivates the activatable postage by updating the central database. 1. A method of activating postage from a computing device , comprising:receiving, at a postage-activation application, a unique identifier that is encoded with an instance of activatable postage printed on an item; andcommunicating, from the postage-activation application, an activation message to an activatable-postage service that comprises the unique identifier.2. An automated transaction system employs a card maintaining an account balance and a terminal for dispensing an article of value and debiting the card's balance. The card has a secure, resident microprocessor which executes an interactive handshake recognition procedure with a secure, resident microprocessor in the value dispensing section of the terminal prior to actuating a requested transaction. In the preferred form, the handshake procedure operates by an exchange of encrypted words between the card microprocessor and the dispenser microprocessor using corresponding encryption algorithms and a secret key number, and the card microprocessor providing a command signal to the dispenser microprocessor only upon successful completion of the procedure. The automated transaction system is particularly suitable as a postage metering terminal having a postmark printer as the value dispensing section. Postage is printed only if the handshake procedure is executed between the card microprocessor and the printer microprocessor. The postal terminal also receives a rate card for computing postage automatically, and prints an invisible authentication mark along with the postmark to discourage counterfeiting. The terminal can be configured to print standard form waybills for postal and private carrier services by loading waybill information from an IC ROM services card. The balance in the user card is refilled in a refilling terminal using a master card which maintains a master account balance and a supervisor card which is in the custody of an authorized person.

The present invention also.includes a system for securing product indicia for use in authentication of products or collecting a tax and includes a processor and a read/write memory associated with the processor. The read/write memory stores therein a product indicia file which contains one or more product indicia in an encrypted form. In addition, the read/write memory stores therein a private key file containing a private encryption key in an encrypted form which is associated with a public encryption key which is used to encrypt the product indicia in the product indicia file. A code-protected device is also associated with the processor and stores therein a code-protected encryption key which is used to encrypt and decrypt the private encryption key in the read/write memory. Further, the code-protected encryption key can not be deciphered without rendering the code-protected memory inoperable. A printing device is also associated with the processor and the processor is configured to utilize the code-protected encryption key to decrypt the private encryption key, use the decrypted private encryption key to decrypt the one or more product indicia in the product indicia file, and transfer the decrypted one or more product indicia to the printing device for printing thereof.

Upon system start-up, the print head microcontroller (60) requests the meter vault microcontroller (44) to transmit the control program version and number and determines whether the control program requires the update software and if so transmits the update software.

An automated transaction system employs a terminal for printing a value indicia, such as a postmark, on an article. The terminal contains a modular printer unit which has a printhead and a dedicated microprocessor physically permanently bonded together such that the printhead microprocessor cannot be physically tampered with without disabling the printhead. The modular printer unit includes a first supply of visible ink and a second supply of invisible ink, and an internal program for printing the value indicia with visible ink and an authentication code, which uniquely corresponds to the value indicia, with invisible ink. The invisible value indicia can be subsequently verified as authentic by machine reading of said invisible authentication code and comparing the authentication code for correspondence to the value indicia.

ABSTRACT A value printing system, such as a postage metering system, is disclosed wherein the secure meter accounting registers are removably coupled to the meter. The registers are maintained redundantly within two dissimilar types of non-volatile memory devices, the devices being enclosed within an accounting vault. The vault may have the form of a small enclosure which may have the dimensions of a typical credit card. The invention provides for the local recharging of the meter postal funds by the removal of a first vault having an indication of depleted postal funds and the insertion of a second vault having an indication of available funds. In addition, by maintaining the meter accounting registers external to the system, the invention provides for a postage metering system wherein the necessity of the complex mechanical security devices of the prior art is eliminated.

The recognition means is operated in an initial phase to read a personal characteristic of a person and generates and stores a personal code corresponding to that personal characteristic. In operation of the postage meter the recognition means generates an input code in respect of the personal characteristic of a potential user of the meter and compares the input code with previously stored personal codes. If the input code matches one of the previously stored codes the postage meter is enabled for operation to carry out postage transactions. Information including the personal code may be included in a printed franking impression on mail items which can then be checked by the postal authority.

The postage meter terminal has the ability to telecommunicate with a remote central computer for the principal purpose of remotely resetting the funding registers of the postage meter terminal. During the telecommunication and subsequent to completing meter recharge, the postage meter terminal can be remotely inspected by the central computer. The terminal includes a microprocessor control system which is programmed to generating inspection data and store that data in a memory unit. The microprocessor control system also includes a random number generator for generating a random number within a limited range. Each number within the range of random number selections corresponds to a respective scrambling technique executable by the microprocessor system. The method of remote inspection is carried out by the microprocessor control system storing desired inspection data in the terminal memory unit generating a random number and then creating a data word of the inspection data and the random number. The data word is then partitioned into a first and second partition. The first partition of the data word including the random number selection at a predetermined bit location within the first data word portion. The second partition of the data word is scrambled pursuant to the scrambling techniques which corresponds to the random number. The data word may then be encrypted utilizing the encryption key which was generated during the remote reset process and communicating the data to the central computer via the communication port. The central computer can then decrypt the encrypted data word since it is aware of the encryption key used to complete the remote meter reset. The central computer then retrieves the random number and descrambles the second portion of the data work according. The central computer is thereby informed of the inspection data for that particular postage meter terminal.

Check numbers for each print data block and validation of the check numbers may be employed at the printer controller. The indicia represents an encrypted message and has the form of an array of pixels, each pixel having a value selected from a predetermined set of values in accordance with a mapping of an encrypted message on to the array. Thus, a person having knowledge of the appropriate decryption key may scan the indicia to obtain the message and verify the status by decrypting the message. In one embodiment disclosed, the item is a mail piece and the status is the payment of postage. The indicia may have the form of a binary matrix transformed by matrix multiplication by a corresponding Hadamard matrix and the encrypted message may be encrypted using a public key encryption system.

The keys for the code generating apparatus are changed to change its code generation at predetermined time intervals in each of the meters. A security center includes apparatus for maintaining a security code database and for keeping track of the keys for generating security codes in correspondence with the changes in each generating apparatus and the information printed on the mailpiece by the postage meter apparatus for comparison with the code printed on the mailpiece. There may be two codes printed, one used by the Postal Service for its security checks and one by the manufacturer. The encryption key may be changed at predetermined intervals or on a daily basis or for printing each mailpiece.

A mailing system includes a mailing machine having a printing mechanism for printing an indication of postage value on a mailpiece and structure for controlling relative movement between the printing mechanism and the mailpiece to ensure the mailpiece is properly positioned relative to the printing mechanism during printing of the indication of postage value; a meter vault having a securely sealed housing, and apparatus, within the securely sealed housing, for accounting for the printed indication of postage value, wherein the meter vault is removably mounted in the mailing machine for easy removal via a plug-in connector; and a printing mechanism control module for securely controlling printing by the printing mechanism based on data received from the meter vault, the printing mechanism control module being removably mounted in the mailing machine for easy removal via a quick disconnect connector; wherein the meter vault and the printing mechanism control module are in electrical communication via the mailing machine. The mailing system can also include ciphered communications between the vault and the printing mechanism.

A PSD has a private key which is associated with a specific public key that is stored in the host PC. The host PC sends the PSD public key private key to the PSD. If the PSD determines that the received PSD public key corresponds to its private key, the system has determined that the expected PSD is connected to the Host system and the PSD is activated to accept postal value requests from the host PC. Additionally, a PSD state identification, such as a checksum of a PSD transaction log file stored in the host may be verified by the PSD, which also has stored therein a PSD transaction log file. In this manner the PSD verifies that the PSD has performed all transactions with the host PC sending the checksum. Methods for verifying in the PSD that the expected host PC is coupled to the PSD mirrors the two embodiments for verifying the expected PSD.

A technique for securely clearing the meter after it has been disabled by a security detection scheme without returning the meter to the factory. During this technique, the meter generates a security lock code which is transmitted to a data center computer. The data center computer compares the security lock code with an internally generated security lock code. If the codes agree, the data center computer then generates a security clear code which is transmitted to the meter. The meter then compares this code with an internally generated security clear code. If these codes agree, then the meter clears the security lock flag thereby enabling the meter. As a result, the customer can subsequently remotely set the meter.

Open metering system with super password vault access

A super password is a one time use password that is issued to a user for the singular purpose of reinitializing the user password system for a meter. When the meter is manufactured, the meter and the Data Center share secret data such that they can execute a predefined and identical algorithm for secure communication. Through such secure communications, the Data Center can authenticate a metering system, and the metering system can accept a predefined command from the Data Center securely. Counters are used as data to encypt. One counter is used for the one way communication from the meter to the data center and counts the number of times that the meter issues a one time authentication code. Another counter is used for the one way communication from the Data Center to the meter and counts the number of times that the Data Center issues a one time super password. The counters are used for two purposes: as data to be encrypted and to confirm the delivery of secure codes between the Data Center and the meter. The use of counters in the process eliminates problems that undelivered messages would create.
