The master disc is pref. made of an alloy of non-ferrous metals, esp. using tin, lead, aluminium, silver, copper, and/or indium. Improves the fidelity of the recording and also simplifies the complicated series of operations normally involved in the plating processes used for record mfr. Master discs are usually made using a thin disc of aluminium coated on both sides with a lacquer, in which the recording is cut using a stylus surrounded by a small heater coil which facilitates cutting, but the heat alters the plasticity of the lacquer and the fidelity of high-frequency signal recording. By using a metal or alloy disc with no lacquer, the dimensions of the cutter stylus can be chosen so no heater coil is required, and fidelity is improved together with the signal/noise ratio. The metal disc can be cut with a diamond cutting stylus and reduces the number of plating operations normally employed in the electroforming of the stamping negatives used to press records.

By lowering the turntable he returns the tone-arm to the starting position. The turntable 13 is carried on an axle 12, which can be reciprocated vertically within a hollow shaft 11, by which it is driven through a pin 12<b> sliding in a slot 11<c> in the shaft. The axle 12 is raised by the lever 15 when the starting-button 19 is depressed. The pin 17 is then engaged under a catch on the lever 22, but can be released by depressing the stopping-button 21. When the turntable is lowered it is brought to rest by the friction of fixed leaf-springs 25. At the same time, the tone arm is lowered on to a curved bar 26, and thus slides back to its starting position.

In order to avoid the accumulation of the liquid at any one portion of the interior space when the turntable is not horizontally disposed, such interior space may be divided into a plurality of liquid-containing compartments which are isolated from each other, as by partitions therebetween, and/or each interior space or compartment may further contain absorbent material which takes up the viscous liquid. The vibration-damping properties of the turntable assembly may be enhanced by providing solid particles which float in the viscous liquid.

A turntable a is keyed to a spindle b in order that it may slide longitudinally thereon and be rotated therewith. A boss d on the turntable hub rests on a ball bearing e which is supported by a flanged sleeve f. Double-ended levers g, h pivoted at i to the 'framework engage at their inner ends g with the underside of the flanged sleeve f and are furnished at their outer ends h with balance weights so arranged that the weight of a record is sufficient to move the turntable a along the spindle b through a distance equal to the thickness of the record. A number of levers g, h may be grouped around the turntable spindle each of which levers is adapted, when rocked, to pick up additional weights so as to balance the increasing weight of records on the turntable. Alternatively, a number of weighted levers may be arranged below one another so that their inner ends g may be engaged by flanges on the sleeve f which are arranged at progressively increasing distances below one another. According to a further modification the tone-arm support may be slidable vertically and supported by the ends h of levers g, h so that the support serves in lieu of the weights j to balance the turntable. The audio output signal is digitally sampled to produce digitized segments. One or more track-titles are obtained (1902) from a remote audio finger-printing service for each digitized segment to provide track-titles. For each obtained track-title, each album-title is requested (1905) upon which the obtained track-title appears, to provide candidate albums. A score is generated (1905) for each provided candidate album based on the number of obtained track-titles that appear on a provided candidate album in the correct order. An album is identified by comparing (2209) these scores.

Securing flywheels on shafts.-In the trans mission train from a prime mover to a gramophone turntable, a massive element smoothes out the relatively small vibratory variations in the driving effort by the effect of inertia and a resilient coupling smoothes out the relatively large vibratory variations, the resilient coupling being rigid when transmitting torques below a given amount. The drive from the prime mover is transmitted by a worm 3 and worm-wheel 4. The latter has two pins 5 passing through arcuate slots 6 in a flywheel 1. The upper face of the flywheel 1 has a circular channel 7 in which two pairs of blocks 8 are slidable, the blocks of each pair being forced towards one another and against stops 9 on the flywheel 1 by springs 10. The end of each block 8 adjacent each pin 5 has a semi-circular recess to clear the pins. For torques below a given amount the coupling transmits solidly, the blocks 8 remaining hard up against the pins 5. When the torque increases above the given amount the normal tension of the springs is exceeded and the coupling becomes resilient.

[Also in Division F2] A disc-record gramophone change-speed gear in which the speed selected is related to the centre-hole size of the record comprises a member 1 of a diameter corresponding to a largehole 45 r.p.m. disc and a centre-pin 4a of a diameter corresponding to a small-hole 33<SP>1</SP>/3 r.p.m. disc, the member 1 being depressible by the weight of any small-holed disc placed about the pin 4a against the action of a spring 3, such that a circular abutment ring 2 is placed selectively to obstruct the path of either one of two identical levers 6, 7. The usual outward movement of the pick-up 13 to start the drive causes a lever 11 to be moved into a latched position, Fig. 2, whereupon a pin 11a acting in heart-shaped slots in the levers and previously holding both levers 6, 7 and their idlers 8, 9 in inoperative positions, allows one, 7 to swing under the action of a spring 19 but holds the other, 6, meantime inhibited in movement by the abutment 2 by engaging the cusp 6a. The idler 9 then transmits a 45 r.p.m. drive to the turntable rim from the larger of two steps 17 on the motor shaft. When a small-hole record lowers the abutment 2 (Fig. 3, not shown), the lever 6 engages the idler 8 with the smaller of the steps 17. Three ribs 1a are arranged to enter the clearances provided in certain breakout-centre type 45 r.p.m. records.
