In a fitted state in which the connector and the partner connector are fitted to each other, the lock member engages the partner connector and locks the two connectors into a fitted state. The solenoid drives the plunger between a restriction position and a release position. The restriction member is movably supported by the plunger. The restricted part receives the restricting part when the plunger is driven into the restriction position. When the plunger is in the restriction position, movement of the restricted part is restricted by the restricting part, and thereby the restricted part directly or indirectly prevents release of the fitted state.

The electromagnet is positioned to be adjacent to a contact region between one or more supply terminals of a DC socket and one or more prongs of a DC plug. As the DC plug is disconnected from the DC socket, a DC arc might form between one or more of the supply terminals and one or more of the prongs. In one embodiment, the low cost and highly consistent inductive apparatus addresses concerns with so called conductive anodic filament (CAF) that occurs within these laminate structures. A modular microelectronic connector having an electrical component or component package (16) molded directly within the connector body and preformed electrical leads which facilitate rapid and simplified connector assembly. In a first embodiment, the component package is molded directly within a one-piece connector body having a series of grooves (44) on the exterior of the body, and the elongated leads of the package are deformed so as to extend into place within the grooves and ultimately within a modular plug receptacle (32) so as to mate with the contacts of the plug. In a second embodiment, a component package having substantially elongated leads is molded within a rear body element or trailer which is then mated with a front body element (sleeve) (14) having a modular plug receptacle (32). The leads are inserted through a series of apertures (34) in the sleeve and deformed so as to extend into the cavity of the receptacle to form the electrical contacts for the plug. A method of manufacturing the above-described connectors is also disclosed.

The invention is a system for transmitting data through a string of downhole components. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the system includes a plurality of downhole components, such as sections of pipe in a drill string. The system also includes a coaxial cable running between the first and second communication elements, the coaxial cable having a conductive tube and a conductive core within it. The system also includes a first and second connector for connecting the first and second communication elements respectively to the coaxial cable. Each connector includes a conductive sleeve, lying concentrically within the conductive tube, which fits around and makes electrical contact with the conductive core. The conductive sleeve is electrically isolated from the conductive tube. The conductive sleeve of the first connector is in electrical contact with the first contact of the first communication element, the conductive sleeve of the second connector is in electrical contact with the first contact of the second communication element, and the conductive tube is in electrical contact with both the second contact of the first communication element and the second contact of the second communication element.
