This is a cellular telephone in which the sound of the rings announcing an incoming call sounds an adjustably number of times and then increases in intensity gradually, starting with a very low level of sound that can be heard by almost no one other than the bearer of the phone, the level of the sound for each of the said number of times gradually increasing at an adjustably variable rate to any adjustably maximum sound. It also contains a button to announce to the caller a re-recordable message, say, stating that the user is unable at the time to talk to the caller who may call back later. The present invention may be applicable to ordinary wired or wireless telephones.

METHOD OF RESPONDING TO AN INCOMING COMMUNICATION RECEIVED BY A HANDHELD DEVICE

A method for replying to an incoming communication received by a handheld electronic device comprises detecting an incoming communication, detecting a selection of one of a number of predetermined responses to the incoming communication and, responsive to detecting a selection, providing the one of said number of predetermined responses. DIRECTED TELEPHONE SYSTEM

The Directed Telephone System (DTS) enhances the operation of group of telephones connected to a Central Office line. The system sends a brief pre-recorded message asking the caller to press one digit out of a menu of names and corresponding digits. On receiving that digit DTS directs the incoming call to a particular telephone set and alerts only the called person by a unique ring code. The DTS provides personalised intercom calls using the existing normal telephones and alert the called person with the same ring code. The system also connects a fax call directly to the fax machine. A DTS unit can be constructed on a circuit board that can be fitted inside each telephone set during manufacturing or in a little box connected to each telephone. Suitable for multiple personnel homes, rented room dwellings, farms, small businesses, etc..

WIRELESS ANSWER AND HOLD FEATURE

In one embodiment according to the invention, a telephone includes an answer and hold feature, whereby, in response to a user input, the telephone answers an incoming call, issues an outgoing greeting and maintains a connection status. Thus, the called party can unobtrusively cause the call to be held in the connected status until a time when the called party can conveniently enter into a conversation. For example, a wireless telephone according to the invention may include a controller, a user input unit, and an outgoing message unit. The controller may be adapted to cause the outgoing message unit to output a particular outgoing message in response to an incoming call and a particular indication from the user input unit. The controller may be further adapted to maintain a connection status of the incoming call so that a user can communicate at a point in time subsequent to the initiation of the outgoing message. In another embodiment according to the invention, a method of handling an incoming call in a wireless telephone includes the steps of providing an indication of the incoming call, receiving a particular user input, outputting a particular outgoing message in response to the particular user input, and maintaining a connection status of the incoming call.

The embodiment of the invention discloses a method for replying a message and terminals. The method comprises the following steps of: extracting an event message from an event record after a called terminal receives a call from a calling terminal; and constructing the event message into a notice message and transmitting the notice message to the calling terminal. By using the method of the embodiment of the invention, the called terminal can automatically reply the message to the calling terminal, so the problem that a user cannot replay the message on special occasions is solved and the calling terminal acquires immediate reply so as to improve user experience of the two parties.

An incoming call destined for a personal voice communication device is responded to by providing a user alert in response to the incoming call and performing a courtesy hold process. In the courtesy hold process, the incoming call is answered, a courtesy hold message is sent as a response to the incoming call and, at the end of the courtesy hold message, the incoming call is put temporarily on hold. The courtesy hold process allows a recipient located in a telephone conversation-inappropriate location to answer the incoming call without needing to speak and then, while the incoming call is on hold, to move to a location where a telephone conversation would be appropriate to take the call. The call responding process may be performed by the recipient's personal voice communication device or by an intermediate communication device with which the recipient's personal voice communication device is in communication.
