The present invention allows a user to screen messages being left at a hosted voicemail system from a telephone terminal. Incoming calls intended for the telephone terminal are routed to the voicemail system immediately or after attempting to connect incoming call to the telephone terminal. As the caller is leaving a message at the voicemail system, a connection between the incoming call, voicemail system, and telephone terminal is established to allow the user to listen to the message and decide whether to take the call. The user may decide to take the call or let the caller finish leaving the message. In one embodiment, the telephone terminal is equipped to open only the speaker channel for monitoring the message and will provide a fully bi-directional connection if the user takes the call. The supporting switch and telephone terminal communicate with each other to facilitate the monitoring and taking of calls.

Distributed SIP silos (DSS) is a Communications Application Platform (CAP) feature that maintains the site's call capacity even when a signaling server fails. DSS uses multiple non-redundant signaling servers to provide sip signaling for the same set of media ports. Because there are multiple signaling servers providing signaling for the same set of ports, the failure of one signaling server only terminates the calls it was actively processing and once those calls have been cleaned up, all the available (non-suspended) ports in the configuration are available to the remaining signaling servers. 1. A computer implemented method comprising:receiving, by a signaling server from a remote endpoint, an invite to the remote endpoint containing the remote endpoint information needed to establish a real-time transport protocol (RIP) session;transmitting, by the signaling server to a media server, a command to start a port including a remote internet protocol (IP) address and a remote port number;transmitting, by the signaling server to the remote endpoint, an acknowledgment indicating the signaling server viewed the invite;receiving, by the signaling server from the media server, an acknowledgement of the start port command and returning the port to be used for a call;transmitting, by the signaling server to the host server, a command indicating the call to be answered by an application running on the host; andreceiving, by the signaling server from the host server, an answer to the call.2. Disclosed is an apparatus for providing an absent addressing service (i.e. call forwarding, voice messaging, and the like) for subscribers normally connected to a H.323 compliant network. Some network entity, such as a subscriber's gatekeeper, intercepts all set-up calls to subscribers requiring such a service. If the subscriber is properly registered, the set-up call is forwarded to the subscriber. Otherwise messages are delivered, in accordance with the configuration of the network gatekeeper, whereby the calling party becomes connected to an absent addressing service rather than the originally called terminal of the subscriber.

A system, method, apparatus, means, and computer program code for allowing a call to a busy telephone number extension to be queued and/or handled in accordance with one or more rules. The telephone may be connected to a PBX (Private Branch Exchange) or other switch or otherwise may be connected to a telephone network. In addition, a computer associated with the person also may be connected directly or indirectly to the PBX. A server connected to the PBX via a CTI (Computer Telephone Integration) link may be connected to the computer via a computer network. If a new call arrives at the PBX for the specific extension while the extension is busy, the PBX may notify the server of the call. When multiple incoming calls to the same extension exist, the server may indicate to the PBX how or in what order to queue the calls to the person until the person takes the calls or the computer or server instructs the PBX on what to do with one or more of the calls.

A “Call Me” conference call system includes a multiport conference unit (MCU) interconnected with the public switched telecommunications network (PSTN), a telecommunications switching system also interconnected with the PSTN, a service control point (SCP) or other intelligent network control component having at least a signaling connection to the switching system, a Call Me conference bridge reservation system interconnected with the SCP and the MCU, and suitable facilities interconnecting these components. When a conference reservation is made, information regarding the conference is distributed to the SCP and MCU. A “Called Party Busy” trigger is applied to the conference host's line. To join the conference, the host and participants alike simply call the host's telephone number. The switching system, finding the host's line busy, queries the SCP, which instructs it to redirect the call to the MCU. The MCU associates the call with a reserved conference by matching the called number with a host's telephone number in reservation records. This advantageously avoids the need for hosts to distribute, and participants to receive a special conference bridge telephone number or access code.

A system and method that allow a subscriber to have incoming telephone calls automatically screened and directed is described. The system allows a subscriber to automatically manage his incoming communications in a way that is easy to control and which requires a minimum of unnecessary interruptions. The system includes a graphical user interface (GUI) which is accessible through the subscriber's personal digital assistant (200), a Network Interface (304), a service control module (306), and a database (308). The system and method allow a subscriber to have all of his incoming telephone calls screened in order to identify those that are of the high importance to the subscriber. The subscriber controls this system by user-friendly interfaces to a name and telephone number database and an appointment calendar database. By entering schedule information into an appointment calendar (including times and locations of meetings and other events) and by entering client's information into the name and telephone number database, the subscriber indicates how to locate the subscriber so that important calls will reach him immediately. These databases also tell the system which clients are of high priority to the subscriber so that lower priority calls can be directed to a voice mail system for access at the subscriber's convenience or routed to an attendant for action.

A caller-controlled barge-in telephone service, managed by telephone systems, intercepts telephone calls directed to instantly busy telephone lines predesignated as objects of this service, and: 1) verifies that the called line is a respectively predesignated object of this service and that the caller is entitled to invoke the service relative to that line; and 2) forms a bridging connection between the caller and parties to a telephone call instantly busying the called line. Verification that a caller is entitled to the service can be implemented by playing a voice announcement requesting the caller to speak or key in an authorization code. If the caller fails to respond or returns an invalid code, the caller is either disconnected or transferred to a voice mail service. Disconnection of the caller may be preceded by a voice announcement (e.g. a spoken “goodbye”). If the called site has call waiting service, that service is applied for a predetermined time to allow the party currently using the called line to voluntarily respond to the associated call waiting signals. If the call waiting signals are not acted upon within the predetermined time, functions associated with barge-in are invoked to forcibly join an authorized caller to the busy connection at the called line. Use of the invention in various network environments is described, including use in the PSTN, in public data networks such as the Internet, and in private data networks. Limited use by a guest of an authorized subscriber is also described.
