ELECTRONIC HALFTONE GENERATOR Method and apparatus for scanning a document original, either black and white or color, and reproducing a corresponding halftone reproduction thereof either locally or at a remote location. A halftone signal is generated by pulse width modulating or comparing the scanned, or video, signal with a periodic signal having two frequencies and phases to create a dot pattern output which is a function of the frequency and phase of the two combined modulating signals. The halftone reproduction generated has variable dot configurations that are controllable to enable both rotation of the dot pattern (screen angle) and geometric modifications of the dot pattern. If the document original is in color, light of three different colors is caused to scan the document, each resultant video signal being processed in a manner as set forth hereinabove. In a preferred embodiment, different screen angles are utilized for each color that comprises the reproduction.

In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, the measure of error between the actual generated screen and the ideal angled screen is the length of a vector in a transformed UV space between the actual screen sample point and the idealized screen sample point. A digital laser platemaker for imaging an electrophotographic member by electrostatic techniques using information which is derived from a source of binary data. The binary data may be achieved by scanning a pattern or may be synthesized electrically to represent that which it is desired to reproduce on the electrophotographic member. The binary data is applied to a pixel generator which is constructed and arranged to produce an output in the form of signals for driving an acusto-optic deflector that in turn deflects a laser beam to form a composite of rays. The composite of rays represent the columns of a pattern to be applied to each pixel which is generated, the rows of the pixel being represented by the output of a shaft encoder that is synchronized with the rotation of a cylinder carrying the electrophotographic member. The pixel generator produces hexagonal pixels and the pattern in each pixel represents density information derived from the binary data originally received by the pixel generator. The patterns in the pixels are arranged to prevent undesirable moire effects. The electrophotographic member receives the composite rays from a carriage which moves in synchronism with the rotation of the cylinder and the rate at which the composite rays are applied. The resulting latent image is toned and fused on the cylinder. Thereafter it may be used as the printing plate after certain processing.

The step of assigning an ordering sequence includes: (i) assigning a first number in the ordering sequence to a first virtual halftone dot center in the base supercell; (ii) assigning a second consecutive number in the ordering sequence to a second virtual halftone dot center in the base supercell; (iii) calculating a value of an aggregate distance function for each virtual halftone dot center in the base supercell not already included in the ordering sequence; (iv) selecting a next virtual halftone dot center in the base supercell in response to the calculated aggregate distance function, the next virtual halftone dot center having one of the least values of the calculated aggregate distance function; (v) assigning the next consecutive number in the ordering sequence to the selected next virtual halftone dot center in the base supercell; and then repeating steps (iii), (iv), and (v), until each virtual halftone dot center in the base supercell is included in the ordering sequence.

A tile-oriented technique and associated apparatus for manipulating a continuous tone (contone) image through image rotation, anamorphic scaling and digital halftone screening for use in illustratively implementing a page description language. Specifically, an incoming contone image is first partitioned into aligned non-abutting tiles (e.g. 215 1 , 215 2 ,..., 215 9 ). Overlapping blocks (e.g. 217,, 217 2 , ..., 217 9 ) are then defined which will hold output data for corresponding tiles. To effect rotation and anamorphic scaling of the contone image, two-dimensional sampling increments, in fast and slow scan directions, are defined to relate movement between successive pixels in an output block to movement between corresponding pixels in the contone image. Similar, though independent, sampling increments, also in the fast and slow scan directions and based in part upon screen angle and screen ruling, are defined for movement between successive pixels in a halftone reference cell. To generate output data for each successive pixel location in a block, incremental sampling occurs in the contone image to yield a corresponding sampled contone value. This value, in conjunction with incremental halftone sampling addresses, then defines a sampling location that is read in a halftone reference plane (e.g. 242 181 ), the resulting output of which is single bit halftone data that defines a writing spot. Each tile in the contone image is successively processed, using two nested loops (1950, 1960), with resulting output data for that tile being written into appropriate pixel locations in a corresponding block in the output image. Clipping variables, incrementally varying in two-dimensional fashion and in unison with the contone pixel sampling location, define valid output data for a contone tile that is to be written into a corresponding block.

The invention is characterized in that it comprises a toolpath generating routine and system for generating a plurality of control points directly from image data representing an image to be engraved. The control points are used to generate a toolpath which, in turn, will be used to energize an engraving head such that a tool or stylus will engrave a pattern of engraved areas in response to the toolpath. An engraving system and method for engraving at least one engraved area is shown having an engraving head tuner for tuning an engraving head such that the frequency characteristic of the engraving head defines a substantially constant gain for frequencies less than a predetermined frequency. The invention is further characterized in that it incudes a system and method for interactively or automatically tuning the engraving head, interactively adjusting the filter characteristics (including the filter coefficients for the filters used on the engraving head) and for being responsive to the type of image data (whether continuous tone data or linework data). The invention is characterized in that it synthesizes the screening function so as to more accurately reproduce the image to be engraved by engraving multiple frequency cells where single cells would be engraved in the past.

Apparatus and an accompanying method for use therein are disclosed for suppressing a screener induced Moire pattern that would otherwise appear in a reproduced color image generated by a raster based marking engine (20). This Moire pattern results from successively sampling a stored bit-mapped font pattern in a grid like raster based writing pattern in order to produce a visual depiction of the stored font pattern in the image. Specifically, this Moire is suppressed by forming an address, for use in successively accessing each desired bit in the stored font pattern, in which the address is formed of at least two portions in which each portion is generated through a summation of an orthogonal positional value with a corresponding specific amount of noise. The amount is a substantially random value occurring within a noise function (1720) that is defined by a substantially uniform probability distribution occurring throughout a region, in the position domain, that has a width equal to the spacing between adjacent micro pixels that form the visual depiction and is substantially zero valued elsewhere. Use of such an amount of noise is sufficient to substantially suppress the amplitude of this screener induced Moire pattern that would otherwise occur in the reproduced image but is advantageously insufficient to inject any distinct artifacts into the image or affect image Moires.

TITLE DIGITAL ELECTRONIC SYSTEM FOR HALFTONE PRINTING ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system for producing an image by halftone printing comprises generating halftone dots from electronic data by scanning across across a raster of write spots in a recording medium, spot-by-spot and line-by-line. Each dot is defined within a repetitive dot template containing a plurality of write spots. The system writes at selective write spots by sending a present write-spot address signal obtained from a write-spot address register to a spot-status Look-Up-Table for selecting a predetermined value for each write spot, the predetermined value determining an on-off status for the present write spot. The spot-status Look-Up-Table has a plurality of predetermined values corresponding, respectively, to addresses of write spots within the dot template. In the present invention, the selective writing step is performed by sending the write-spot address signal also to a pointer Look-Up Table for generating an address pointer signal uniquely associated with a particular write-spot address code, and transmitting the address pointer signal to the write-spot address register in order to obtain the next write-spot address signal.

This invention provides an engraving method and apparatus for engraving a plurality of cells which define a pattern defining at least one edge on a surface of a cylinder. The method and apparatus generate an edge signal corresponding to at least edge cell situated in a pattern defining at least one edge on the surface. The system and method may utilize a tabulator for tabulating a table of data corresponding to an image and a locator for locating the edge using the data. The system and method provide a signal generator which can cause the engraving location of an engraved area to be shifted to facilitate defining the at least one edge. Moreover, the signal generator may also cause the area to be reduced in order to change a predetermined characteristic of the area in order to better define the at least one edge. Thus, the invention facilitates adjusting a characteristic of at least one of the engraved areas in order to change a spacial relationship between the engraved area and another engraved are to provide, for example, a non-regular or non-periodic spacing of engraved areas. The invention provides a shaping data generator for generating shaping data to be used to modify the image data corresponding to an area to be engraved to redefine at least a portion of the data to provide an engraved area having a desired shape.

A method of, and an apparatus for, recording halftone dots on a photosensitive film by selecting halftone dots having different minimum repeating units in response to respective original image components. SPMs (103a to 103d) previously store screen pattern (SP) signals having different minimum repeating units, while address generation controllers (AGCp to AGCs) previously store address signals corresponding to the respective SP signals. Pattern selection signals (PPS) are inputted in response to respective original image components and the address signals are selected in correspondence thereto and inputted in the SPMs (103a to 103d), thereby reading the SP signals. Comparators (104a to 104d) compare pixel signals (DSa to DSd) expressing density levels of respective pixels forming a total image with the selected SP signals, to output halftone dot signals (DOTa to DOTd) in response to the result of this comparison. Thus, it is possible to select halftone dots having different minimum repeating units in response to respective original image components, to record the same on a photosensitive film.

A method and apparatus for engraving wherein the engraver includes a merge system for merging image data to be engraved in a manner which will reduce or eliminate "halo" and/or "ghost" images. The method utilizes a processor in an engraver for creating image data comprising continuous tone data and line work data. The method further involves the steps of locating transition data corresponding to where the continuous tone data and line work data meet; and processing at least some of the image data to provide processed image data using the transition data located in the locating step. The engraver has an engraving bed; a headstock and a tailstock located on the engraving bed for rotatably supporting a cylinder to be engraved; an engraving head located on the engraving bed for engraving the cylinder; an image data generator coupled to the engraving head, the image data generator being capable of creating image data comprising continuous tone data, line work data and transition data. The image data generator comprises a locator for locating the transition data and a processor associated with the locator for processing at least some of the image data to provide processed image data using the transition data located by the locator. The system and method facilitate selectively enhancing at least one edge or area within a data set, such as either a line work data set or a continuous tone data set, while selectively avoiding enhancing other areas, such as an area between a line work area and continuous tone area of an image.

An ultraviolet image pattern is created on a recording medium having florescence properties and a first color by electronically creating a first electronic pattern ink, the first electronic pattern ink including a second color, holes, and a first pattern, the holes representing areas in the first electronic pattern ink wherein the second color is absent; electronically creating a second electronic pattern ink, the second electronic pattern ink including the second color, holes, and the first pattern, the holes of the second electronic pattern ink representing areas in the second electronic pattern ink filled with a third color, the third color being equal to the first color; electronically creating an electronic image region having a background and a foreground; electronically painting, using the first electronic pattern ink, the background of the electronic image region; electronically painting, using the second electronic pattern ink, the foreground of the electronic image region; and rendering, using marking materials, the electronic image region on a recording medium such that only the florescence properties of the recording medium are only visible through the holes when viewing the recording medium using ultraviolet illumination.
