The edge detection module can produce edge tag output, and the video decoding module, operating in parallel, can generate decoded video output. The edge tag output and decoded video output can be transmitted to a set of downstream image processing modules, including modules for color trapping, edge smoothing, and other operations. Because earlier processing stages share information with downstream modules which require the same or related data, redundant processing can be reduced or eliminated. Complex image operations can therefore be carried out, and high-quality output can be generated, without sacrificing responsiveness.

Embodiments are directed towards identifying background pixels in a scanned image so that they can be removed from the image. A histogram of each color channel for an initially scanned portion of the image may be determined. The histogram may represent a frequency distribution of pixels in the scanned portion across each color value for each color channel. A white point tracking profile may be determined based on the histogram. The white point tracking profile may identify a range of color values for each channel that are statistically related to a mode color value of a corresponding color channel. When pixels in the scanned image are determined to have a color profile within the white point tracking profile, then those pixels may be modified to a predetermined color profile, such as a maximum color value for each channel. A method for converting a full color image to a monochrome image is provided, wherein the color values of pixels are decomposed in a luminance and a chrominance component. Both components are converted to a grayscale value representing an intensity of a pixel. The luminance grayscale value is in a limited range close to a light end of the available grayscale. The chrominance grayscale value is closer to the dark end of the available grayscale when the chrominance component of the color value is larger. The darkest value of the two converted values is selected for a corresponding pixel. The effect of this conversion is that colored pixels are darker than colorless pixels, which is useful to highlight parts of a monochrome image that stand out because of their color in a full color image. It is particularly useful to help color blind people recognize colored parts of an image. 1. A method of color printing is described in which only two transparent inks are used to reproduce a source image. The original digitally encoded image in red, green and blue colors may be initially adjusted for contrast, brightness, color balance, and tonal value. This is then converted to cyan, magenta and yellow encoding. The two of these channels which best represent the dominant colors of original image are then selected. The critical colors of the original image to be reproduced with reasonable accuracy are determined and spot colors that best represent these are selected from an ink palette. The spot colors are assigned to the selected channels to which they have the closest color relationship. These two channels are next superimposed to form a composite image and their greyscale values are adjusted to produce an image most closely resembling the desired final image.
