The following coding scenario is addressed: A number of audio source signals need to be transmitted or stored for the purpose of mixing wave field synthesis, multi-channel surround, or stereo signals after decoding the source signals. The proposed technique offers significant coding gain when jointly coding the source signals, compared to separately coding them, even when no redundancy is present between the source signals. This is possible by considering statistical properties of the source signals, the properties of mixing techniques, and spatial hearing. The sum of the source signals is transmitted plus the statistical properties of the source signals which mostly determine the perceptually important spatial cues of the final mixed audio channels. Source signals are recovered at the receiver such that their statistical properties approximate the corresponding properties of the original source signals. Subjective evaluations indicate that high audio quality is achieved by the proposed scheme.

In one embodiment, a method determines a video including ad slots inserted within the video. The method generates a caption curve for a caption file of caption segments for a video based on start and stop times for caption segments in the caption file. The caption segments in the caption file were generated for the video without including ad slots. Then, the method determines a speech velocity for the video using the caption file and revises the caption curve based on the speech velocity and a number of characters in caption segments in the caption file. A speech probability curve is determined based on audio of the video and the method correlates the speech probability curve to the revised caption curve to align the caption segments of the caption file with speech of the video.

A method of automated content selection is disclosed, in which an end user views multimedia content provided via by a content aggregator that is also programmed to detect content delivery boundaries. This occurs, for instance, when the provider switches from showing an event to showing interstitial advertising. On detecting a delivery boundary, a substitute stream of multimedia content is then automatically sent. Detecting a content delivery boundary is accomplished in a twostep process. First, a candidate frame indicative of a deliver boundary is found. This is done, for instance, by finding a change in average sound volume of sufficient magnitude. The candidate frame is then compared to a database of representative frames of known interstitial video segments. If a sufficiently good match is found, the frame is determined to be a content boundary frame, and appropriate switching of the video being relayed is made. 1. The television broadcast is received at the data processing system, and audio content of the television broadcast is analyzed to generate an audio fingerprint of a portion of the audio content. The identified audio fingerprint are compared to audio fingerprints stored in a database to thereby identify the portion of the television broadcast based on the generated audio fingerprint. By identifying the contents of an actual broadcast prior to redistribution of the broadcast, additional actions may be taken that are unique to the identified content.
