A wheel manufactured from an elongated section of sheet steel is disclosed together with a method for its manufacture. Five rim retaining flanges are formed in the sheet steel. A rim retaining lip is formed along one edge of each of these five flanges. A reinforcing rib is formed adjacent each side of each rim retaining flange, making a total of ten reinforcing ribs. The sheet steel, formed with flanges and ribs, is coiled into a single closed loop. Ten circumferentially spaced radial vanes are formed in the loop. The five rim retaining flanges interconnect pairs of adjacent vanes at the outer diameter of the resulting wheel. At the inner diameter of the resulting wheel, five hub attachment flanges interconnect pairs of vanes. A threaded hub, fitted with bearing positioning shoulders, is welded and riveted to the five hub attachment flanges to complete the wheel.

To manufacture the component of the rim base of the composite wheel, tubular workpiece is used, which is subjected to hot forming by depositing in the press mould. However, the desired shape is formed in the part of the workpiece. Part of the workpiece to be deposited is heated to the forming temperature at the treatment site in the press mould. Preferably, induction heating is used. During manufacturing of the rim base, the component, produced by the above method, is welded to at least one further component. The used press mould comprises two parts which are movable relative to each other and a heating element. 1468739 Making wheel rims; stamping; foundry moulds GEORG FISCHER AG 9 Oct 1974 [16 Oct 1973] 43833/74 Headings B3A B3F and B3Q A method of making an annular rim member for use in a wheel to receive a pneumatic tyre, comprises forming a mould cavity with a radial dimension oversize and/or undersize over an annular portion of the rim periphery, casting an iron-carbon melt into the cavity to form the rim member, removing the member from the cavity, and working the member radially to bring it to the required dimensions by means of plastic deformation. The melt may be of cast iron or cast steel and the former is treated prior to pouring to form a ductile casting whereas a cast steel member is heat treated after solidification to have the necessary ductility. The rim member is cast in a said mould, which preferably includes a hollow annular core (3), an annular pouring basin (5) and feeding duets (7), Fig. 2 (not shown). The core (3) bridges the mould portion (4) and defines the radially outer surface 19 of the rim, Fig. 6, which is shown by chain lines in the as-cast condition and is I-10% oversize. The as-cast rim 10<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7 is moved step-by-step between shaping operations on previously cast rims along rails 30 of a press until it rests on cross-bars 32 on lifting rods 31, which raise the rim into an open ring of die segments 40 mounted on a movable ring 39. The die segments are raised by the ring and as the ring moves upwardly they are driven inwardly by sloping surfaces 37 in a guide ring 36 to form the ring 10 to its finished dimensions. The die segments are then lowered, thereby opening them and the finished rim is lowered on to the rails 30. Alternatively an undersized rim may be expanded or the rim may be formed with undersized and oversized portions which are expanded and compressed to the required dimensions respectively.

Blank 10 is fed into the coiler, Fig. 2, which forms station A of a machine for carrying out the method, blank 10 being curved by outer rollers 20, 21 and adjustable inner rollers 22, 23 so that the end 13 of blank 10 comes against a stop 12a. The blank 10 is already cut to the size necessary to form the cylinder and the diameter of the cylinder can be varied by adjusting the position of rollers 22, 23. The coiled blank 11a is then transferred to pressing station B via a double sided cam (53, 54). Fig. 4 (not shown), to ensure the correct width of gap and locate the gap in the correct circumferential position for the pressing tools. At station B, Fig. 3, dies 43, 44, in co-operation with dies 41, 42 flatten the edges of the gap, the edges being initially pressed beyond their desired position to allow for them to return to this under their own resilience. Coiled blank 11b is then transferred to station C where it is welded by any known method to form a welded cylinder 11c and transferred from this station to the finishing stations. The blanks are automatically transferred between stations A, B and C by a transfer mechanism which moves the blanks simultaneously between the stations as a blank is fed into station A. Drop center truck rim and method of forming same

A method of forming a drop center truck rim from a flat steel strip rolled into the form of a smooth cylinder and welded together along the abutting axial edges. The weld flash build-up on the smooth cylinder is removed before the cylinder is formed into the desired rim profile. The cylinder is then simultaneously subjected to an axial load and external fluid pressure to force the cylinder radially against an internal die to form a circumferential well in the central portion of the cylinder, while flaring the end portions of the cylinder. Next, the low stress areas of the desired rim profile, which are the end portions of the rim, are shear formed to reduce the thickness of the steel cylinder in the end portions, while retaining the original thickness of the flat strip in the central well. The final rim profile is then produced by roll forming, after which the rim is sized.

A wheel for use in a high performance environment, such as racing, is provided with structure to increase the ability of the wheel to withstand fatigue stresses. The structure comprises an area of increased thickness provided on the rim of the wheel, located adjacent the connection of mounting structure to the inner surface of the rim. The area of increased thickness comprises a crimp formed in the material of the rim providing a recess opening onto the outer surface of the rim, with the recess being substantially filled with weld material. The wheel so constructed has a rim which is reinforced and capable of withstanding high local stresses exerted on the rim during operation by the mounting structure, yet which allows flexibility of the rim. The ability of the wheel to withstand fatigue stresses is dramatically enhanced, providing improved safety and durability without detracting from wheel performance.

In connection with the making of the hub plate, the second hub plate and the central hub plate can be produced from a single piece of suitable material, preferably steel plate, as the mentioned tabs extend over each other when two parts are separated and turned such that the tabs come to lie upon each other. The two hub plate parts are then joined by bolts in the holes formed in the mentioned tabs.

In order to success-fully carry out the method, it is preferred to select the ratio H/D of the height H of the material with respect to the inner diameter D thereof to be equal to or less than 1.5, the ratio t/D of the wall thickness t of the material with respect to the inner diameter D to be in the range of 0.006 to 0.06 and the mean deformation resistance or mean flow stress of the material to be in the range of 10 to 25 kg/mm2, while the inclination angle of the tapered portions of the die and the punch is set to be in the range of 10 to 65°. .

Abstract Of The Disclosure A system for forming flat base truck rims from flat strips of steel rolled into the form of smooth cylinders and welded together along the abutting axial edges. The system is capable of forming rims from hot rolled, rimmed, low carbon steel strips. The smooth cylinder is initially formed by a plurality of dies located at opposite ends of the cylinder and mounted for advancing movement relatively toward each other in the direction of the cylinder axis to flare a first end of the cylinder radially outwardly while rough forming a rim gutter on the other end of the cylinder. The radial thickness of the metal forming the rim gutter is increased during the rough forming thereof by applying a compressive axial load to the cylinder and providing a gutter-forming die cavity wider than the starting thickness of the cylinder. The rim gutter is warm or hot formed by heating that end of the cylinder before advancing the dies to roughly form the gutter. The flaring step is performed with an expandable die which is expanded during the flaring step and then collapsed and advanced to deform the outwardly flared portion of the cylinder to rough form a fixed flange, so that different portions of the same die are used to effect both the flaring and the flange forming. The flat base of the rim is shear formed to reduce the radial thickness thereof in the low stress area between the gutter and the fixed flange. The final profile in the fixed flange and the gutter is produced by roll forming the rim.

The windows define a plurality of spokes between adjacent windows, and the angular size of each of the windows along the outer band is preferably greater than the angular size of each of the spokes. The outer band is partially closed toward a cylindrical shape by engaging a cam die against at least a portion of the outer band. The outer band is substantially fully closed into a cylindrical shape by axially wiping the outer band using a cylindrical die. The intermediate camming operation achieves the desired final shape after wiping without introducing stresses that would weaken or distort the wheel disc.

Carbon fiber bicycle wheels are formed from parts cut from carbon fiber cloth and then joined together to form a rim, sidewalls, spokes, flanges and a center tunnel on which the flanges are mounted. The parts are then assembled, bonded together, and cured to form a wheel. During assembly, the spokes and the wheel are placed in tension by moving the flanges outwardly on the center tunnel after assembly and then bonding them in place to stiffen and strengthen the wheel. A metallic support portion has three parts including a center portion and outside portions of both sides. A rubber leg portion is vulcanized and formed so as to be integrated to the outside portion. The center portion and the outside portions are coupled by welding or the like. A mold to form and vulcanize the leg portion can therefore be made smaller. Moreover, since the left and right leg portions can be vulcanized and formed by a single mold, the structure of the mold is simpler.

The present invention is directed to a method of manufacturing a three piece aluminum wheel assembly comprising the steps of providing a pair of circular blanks made of a heat treatable alloy to be formed into preforms of a general shape. The preforms are subjected to a quenching step in an unconstrained condition to allow for natural thermal deformation during the quenching operation. The as quenched preforms are then subjected to a first forming operation using spin forming to remove the effects of the thermal deformation in the preform, followed by a second forming step using spin forming to shape the component to its desired final shape. The components are then exposed to precipitation heating and finishing to yield the final product.

The present invention provides an enhanced method and apparatus for locating a valve stem aperture in a wheel. The invention includes a locating station having an overhead camera to scan the wheel. The scanned image of the wheel is received by a controller and is divided into radial zones. The controller locates the radial zone that defines the valve stem aperture from the scanned image of the wheel. The wheel then moves along an assembly line to a stemming station. A robot is positioned at the stemming station. The robot supports a valve stem insertion tool and a valve stem aperture locating sensor. When the wheel reaches the stemming station, the robot moves the valve stem insertion tool and the valve stem aperture locating sensor to the radial zone that defines the valve stem aperture. The robot moves the valve stem aperture locating sensor along the radial zone that defines the valve stem aperture and locates the valve stem aperture. The robot then moves the valve stem insertion tool into position and inserts a valve stem in the valve stem aperture.
