[Classes 72 and 82 (i)] Electric contact members are made of material consisting of 45-75 per cent. of tungsten or molybdenum powder impregnated with 25-55 per cent. of an alloy of silver with 2-10 per cent. of copper. The material may be made by mixing the refractory metal powder with an organic binder such as shellac and alcohol which is driven off by heating at about 1000‹C. leaving a porous mass which is afterwards impregnated with the molten silver-copper alloy. The contact members may be heat-treated by quenching from 600- 775‹C. and reheating at 175-300‹C, whereby the impregnating alloy is hardened.

A sintered composite metal body such as an electrical contact is made by unilaterally compacting a metal powder such as W,Re,Mo, or their alloys, sintering the compact so as to retain the density variation from one end of the compact to the other and then impregnating the sintered compact with a molten metal such as Cu, Ag or their alloys. The impregnating metal may also contain Ni, Co, Cr, Zn or Sn. Examples are given of the pressing of a powder mixture containing 98.5-93% W, 1-5% Cu and 0.5-2% Ni, a powder mixture containing 89%W, 10% Cu and 1% Ni, sintering at 1150 DEG -1350 DEG C. in vacuo, hydrogen or an inert gas and impregnation with Cu. In a separate embodiment, particularly for shallow compacts the metal powder may be pressed in several layers at the same pressure, or the first layer is pressed at the highest pressure and each succeeding layer is pressed at lower pressures. In this method the powder layers may be of the same or different metals to produce the infiltrated systems M1 -M2 or M1 -M2 -M3 where M1 is W, Re or Mo; M2 is Cu or Ag and M3 is Ni, Co or Cr.

A high temperature material has a carbide phase based on niobium and/or tantalum carbide and a metal phase based on tungsten and/or molybdenum. AgCdO based contact elements are replaced in contactors and small circuit breakers with CdO-less type elements which exhibit little burn-off in the arc, a low welding force and minimal heating when carrying continuous current. However, known AgSnO2 contact materials do not have optimum values in all operationally important properties. In these contact materials a more firmly adhering oxide layer occurs as compared with AgCdO. The invention relates to a sintered compound material for electrical contacts, consisting of AgSnO2Bi2O3CuO and containing at least one other metal oxide additive which sublimes below the melting temperature of silver. The SnO2, Bi2O3 and CuO are globularly precipitated in silver material structure zones having a maximum diameter of 200 mu m, and the metal oxide additive is distributed on the surfaces of the boundary regions of these microscopic silver zones.

A W powder, particle size 1 to 10 microns, is compacted at 20 to 35 t. s. i. and may optionally be presintered at 1250‹C. in hydrogen prior to infiltration with a Cu-Ti alloy containing 0À05 to 0.5% Ti, alternatively the green W compact may be infiltrated. Infiltration is carried out in a vacuum of 10-5 Torrat 1200‹-1450‹C. for 20 to 60 minutes. In an alternative embodiment the W may be coated with Ti either by electrolysis or vapour deposition and then infiltrated with Cu, the amount of Ti coating being sufficient to produce a Cu-Ti alloy containing 0.05 to 0.5% Ti.

Electrical contacts and welding electrodes are made from an alloy containing by weight W 32 to 36%, Mo 32 to 36%, Cu and impurities balance. In one example described the raw materials are 41% by weight each of Mo and W powders not over 5 microns in Fisher average particle size, and 18% by weight of Cu powder of minus 100 mesh. These are blended by ball milling, a binder added, and compacts of desired shape obtained by conventional pressing techniques. The compacts are then sintered at 1300-1350 DEG C. for 6-20 minutes in an inert or reducing atmosphere, followed by infiltration of the balance of the Cu at 1200-1275 DEG C. The Examples include the use of W and Mo particles and matrix alloys of composition:- 40% Mo 20% Fe 40% Ni; 40% W 20% Fe 40% Ni; 28.5% Mo, 28.5% Cu 28.5% Ni 14.5% Fe; 40% Mo 40% Co 20% Fe. The product may be used in aircraft counterbalances, radiation shielding, gyroscopic inertia members and die casting dies.

PROCESS FOR HARD FACING A SUBSTRATE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hard facing alloy is applied to a surface of a substrate by making a mixture of at least two constituents whose net composition is the desired hard facing alloy composition. The constituents have different solidus temperatures, at least one of which is above a processing temperature of the substrate and another of which is below the processing temperature of the substrate. In one preferred approach, the mixture is prepared by pressing and lightly sintering the constituents in the form of powders, so that the mixture retains its shape and can be attached to the substrate surface. Then the substrate is heated to the processing temperature and maintained for a time sufficient to permit interdiffusion of the several different phases toward a homogeneous hard facing alloy composition uniformly through a major portion of the volume.

1355291 Sintered iron alloys TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK 10 Jan 1972 [28 June 1971] 1065/72 Headings C7A and C7D A sintered wear-resistant alloy consists of a sintered iron-base skeleton, the pores of which are infiltrated with copper, copper-based alloys, copper-lead based alloys, lead, lead-base alloys, antimony or antimony-lead alloys. The sintered skeleton consists of, in weight per cent:- 0À25 to 8% molybdenum 0À2 to 1À0% carbon and 0À2 to 2À0% tungsten, vanadium, titanium or tantalum or 1 to 20% nickel and/or copper or 0À1 to 2À0% phosphorus, sulphur or boron, the balance being iron. Preferred infiltrants are copper in amounts of 10 to 30 per cent by weight of the resulting alloy, 10 to 30 per cent of copperbased alloy with chromium, tin and/or zinc, 5 to 30 per cent of copper-lead alloy or of copper-lead based alloy with chromium, tin and/or zinc, 1 to 25 per cent by weight of lead, antimony, antimonylead alloy or of lead-based alloy with bismuth, antimony and/or cadmium. The alloys are produced by mixing the powdered constituents for the skeleton, pressing and heating under reducing atmosphere, and then infiltrating the skeleton under reducing atmosphere. The sintered alloys are particularly suited for valve seat rings of internal combustion engines or bearings for rollers.

Also the metal oxide film of the present invention is a dense film that includes less oxygen defects and almost no voids therein because a content of a non-oxidized metal is not higher than 1 mole % of a metal component that constitutes the metal oxide and a packing density is 0.98 or higher.
