Provided herein are methods for detecting ovarian serous papillary carcinoma in an individual. A tumor sample from the individual is examined for gene product expression levels of a group of genes consisting of transforming growth factor beta receptor III, platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha, SEMACAP3, ras homolog gene family member I (ARHI), thrombospondin 2, and disabled-2/differentially expressed in ovarian carcinoma 2 (Dab2/DOC2) Gene products which are down-regulated compared to those in a control individual indicate the presence of ovarian serous papillary carcinoma 1. A method of detecting ovarian serous papillary carcinoma in an individual , comprising the steps of:examining a tumor sample from said individual by the expression levels of gene products of a group of genes consisting of transforming growth factor beta receptor III, platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha, SEMACAP3, ras homolog gene family member I (ARHI), thrombospondin 2, and disabled-2/differentially expressed in ovarian carcinoma 2 (Dab2/DOC2) gene; wherein downregulation of the gene products of said group of genes compared to a control individual indicates that the tumor sample is an ovarian serous papillary carcinoma.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the gene product expression is examined by flow cytometry or immunohistochemical staining. This application is a divisional under 35 U.S.C. §120 of pending application U.S. Ser. No. 13/066,004, filed Apr. 4, 2011, which is a divisional under 35 U.S.C. §120 of application U.S. Ser. No. 10/862,517, filed Jun. 7, 2004, now U.S. Pat. No. 7,927,795, which is a nonprovisional under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) of provisional patent application U.S. Ser. No. 60/476,934, filed Jun. 9, 2003, now abandoned, the entirety of all of which are hereby incorporated by reference.1.
