12,398. Brill, J. A. May 31. Steps; underframing of bodies; tramcars.-To facilitate the entrance and exit of passengers, electric and other street cars of the kind to which access is obtained by steps fitted along the sides are provided with a greater number of steps than usual, without increasing the width or decreasing the seating capacity of the vehicle. To effect this, the usual wooden floor-supporting sills at the sides of the car are superseded by metallic sills of Z, L, or similar section, one of the webs of the sill being arranged in a horizontal position to serve as a step from which another step can be suspended. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 20, the side sill consists of a Z-section bar 2, 4, 3. The floor 17 is supported on planking 16 secured to the sill. The lower step 76 is hinged or rigidly attached to hangers 77 fixed to the sill. The superstructure of the car is supported on posts 53 spaced coincidently with the centres of the rows of transverse seats. The lower ends of the posts fit into sockets or bases 61 bolted to the sill and resting upon or fastened above the horizontal web 4. The ends of the seats 58 project over the horizontal web 4 of the sill, so that the width of the seating space retains its usual dimension, but the width of the flooring between the seats is lessened to accommodate the additional step. The seat panels 55 may be formed integrally with the sockets or supporting-bases of the posts, or they may be supported on the bases or on brackets 62. Between the posts the step 4 is covered by tread plates 73. The posts and seat panels are formed with grooves 60 in which the ends of curtain rods slide. The construction and fitting of the seat panels and post sockets may be variously modified. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 22, the sill consists of an angle-iron 3, 4 from which the lower step is hung as shown. The floor is supported on an angle-iron 46. Fig. 3 shows in plan the struts and crossings employed between the side sills. ...
