Tufts of wool are pulled from a body (104), Fig. 2 (not shown), of such material which is moving on a conveyor between treatment vessels by a pair of forceps (106) mounted upon a cam-operated arm (105) and controlled by the engagement of a pressure foot (107) with the material. Samples are drawn from a moving mass of fibrous material e.g. on a belt 121, by a device comprising an arm 109 movable towards and away from the material, an apertured foot 126 likewise movable to rest on the material during removal of a sample through the aperture, and jaws 111 mounted on the arm and operable to pull a sample from the material. Cam 104 moves arm 106 about pivot 107 to lower the foot 126 onto the material, cam 108 then lowers the jaws 111 by means of lever 109, and cam 112 pulls a cord 114 to close the jaws, which are then lifted. Scissor blade 122 cuts off the sample from the mass upon operation of a pneumatic cylinder 124, the jaws are opened, and the sample is conveyed to a testing station by a suction tube 116.
